I just took these photos this afternoon so I could show off the two WC boys that I have adopted as my first garters. From what you all have told me on the forum I'm still assuming I have a Valley and a Wanderer. Let me know if you think I have something else after looking at the photos.948

Is it fair to guess that based on the size of these two guys that they were last summer's babies?

You can never tell that from WC. One location I know of for oregon red-spots has many adults 2.5-3.5 feet in length. Most other areas I know of, the snakes average 1.5-2.5 feet. A yearling in the first area could already be 20 inches long, but from the other area, perhaps only 12 inches long. There's just no way to tell for sure. Your snakes could be anywhere from 1-3 years old I would guess, and I'd have a good chance of being totally wrong.

You can generally never tell the age of a w/c snake.....size generally is determined by the diet they eat...and how much....
the first is a wandering, the second a valley.
