I have been trying and trying to narrow down just which species I want to begin my garter journey with and I am VERY taken with the black necked garters. I seem to be drawn to snakes with nice facial markings. Can someone tell me a little about their experience with black necked garters? How much do they typically go for as in did I pick a crazy expensive one to start with? Is anyone expecting any babies from a black necked this year?Steve has really done a good job of peaking my interest in radix though.

Just take the radix. You won't be disappointed. If you want something more colorful, I'll see what I can do about getting you a T. sirtalis concinnus, or other members are expecting litters too. Black necked aren't widely available as far as I know. They are one of the few garters found in desert regions and their wild populations are shrinking. Not your typical garter, and not for beginners.
I would highly recommend a young female T. radix,(plains garter) T.s. concinnus, (oregon red-spotted garter) or T. marcianus. (checkered garter) or even a T. sirtalis sirtalis (eastern garter)
Widely available, and all great garters. I think that T. s. infernalis may be a bit more expensive and not as available as the above mentioned garter snakes. Black necked, forget 'bout it! (or not? :o)

All great advice & awesome garters mentioned. If it's facial markings are your thing, checkereds are right up there:

personally I've got no experience with black-necks, but if it's facial markings you're interested in, I'd say go with a checkered
radix have nice ones too

I'm once again hoping to have a litter of blacknecks but in past years that hasn't really panned out. Keeping my fingers crossed.....

As of yesterday, I'm expecting a clutch of eastern blacknecks. The big female I got from Tommy is gravid. She's a CB girl herself and boy is she stocky! She's a good size so I should have enough to go around! :D My male showed no interest in breeding this year, I think he was right on the verge of being ready and that he's still a little confused :D. I have 2 males now, one of which is a proven breeder and so next year, I'll be good to go with 2.3 EB's.

Wow those were some pretty snakes. Thank you for posting pictures it really gives more to look at than a single pic and general species info. If they are in the $80 range I can do that. Shannon, how much would you be selling them for? I'll keep my fingers crossed for all those expecting babies.. I really think this is the one I want.
I'm hoping for one, maybe two litters but I never know! Last year my big girl slugged out except for one tiny baby that did not make it and one female.
I should know in a couple of months if I the breeding was successful this year!
