I just had a female give birth while in shed phase. This is a first for me.
Is this unusual or normal?

That's quite odd. I've never seen that before!!

I can say I've seen wild ordinoides do that. My concinnus have gone blue, but clear again, gave birth, then shed. Other than ordinoides giving birth outside in the wild, (leaving a trail of newborns as she goes) I've never seen a garter give birth while "blue".
I think that shed phase or "blue" can happen any time it is needed. Just so happens the babies decided it was time to come out, and mom happened to be in shed. Not even mom can predict with precise accuracy, when the babies will begin to hatch. She's just carrying incubating eggs after all. Even if she was a mammal and truly pregnant, mom has no way of knowing if the young will be ready to come out while she's in the tub, toilet, changing clothes, driving, or shedding! Wait, that didn't come out right.
It's just that odds are against the two things happening at the same time. Doesn't mean it's weird or unprecedented. I've never heard of a woman going into labor and suddenly giving birth while walking backwards either. Doesn't mean it can't happen.

Small litter. 6 healthy ones. She's a first time mom.

Glad to hear all is well. Just goes to show, none of us can predict when the little ones are coming!
