She's gorgeous. and... old? She looks as worn as my old concinnus girl. She died after a batch of stillborns at age 21. In retrospect, I probably should have prevented her from mating at that age.
I know I probably cursed sky by saying this but "please don't let this be another epic fail"
She's big. One might say "too big"

THis female is from Laprairie Quebec she was caught in 2007 or 2008 not sure.
She is 24 inches long but she is big!!I think she is probalby born in early 2000.
Caught on my friend backyard but Her original den is destroy ,home and streets here she is safe....An artificial hibernaculum was built few years ago at this site and I release most of babies from last year right on....

Great looking girl Charles! I'd imagine she's looking at a pretty big litter if she's carrying that high still and is that big, impressive. Best of luck on the litter, what a beautiful snake.

Shes cool looking, almost a solid black back no checkers and her dorsal even disapears, nice snake. She certainly looks fat enough to have a good litter. best of luck with her.

can we even get snakes from Canada?
I mean other than the ones that cross the border on their own
charles parenteau
05-03-2010, 10:22 AM
Sounds good to me ...I don't think there is Sirtalis .sirtalis near the ranch? Not very far from the limite range of eastern garter snake!?
Someday I will need to make the snake cross the border legaly so I need to learn how...I will ask to a good friend of mine what are the procedures and someday new blood from the original flame genetic will be available in U.S :)...
Over 10 years ago few flame babies went to u.s.a from the crossbreeding between my femelle and male Blais flame...and I found it very cool!
In 2011 I hope to produce the most strikking red you can imagine....the best is yet to come...be patient.

wels eggs are like constapation right? everyone hates that hell hole!now child birth has got to be a lot more painfull....those girls are screaming and theyre on morphine! glad im a boy!(FYI not ment to be offensive)....would explain akward movment thers a lot of weight back there and being small as garters are the weight might be a third of body weight(guessing hopefully im somewhere in the ballpark)

Well, half the time, the babies just sort of slither out. The rest are in very soft membranes that don't really seem to stretch the mother out. They come out more like a big poop.

You can sex them the day they are born. If fact that will be the easiest day of their life to sex them via popping, it gets more difficult as they develope muscle tone, then you usually have to probe.
Congrats Charles! Do you think some will develope the solid black back like mom? I was wondering if any would be born like that, but it doens't look like it from what I could see from the pics.

One thing I have never had trouble with is sexing T. sirtalis (any ssp) neonates or adults visually. I don't understand why people feel the need to pop or probe. Enlighten me.

I thought that once too, and got it wrong more than once.
when you are selling morphs for a good price, customers get riled when they order a pair and wind up with a same sex couple.
A couple of years ago Stefan put up some pics and asked us to guess, 90% of the guesses were incorrect.
ConcinusMan
06-16-2010, 01:56 AM
Wow, you're kidding me!
But mainly I guess I was wondering why Don felt the need to pop/probe newborn iowa albinos. When I got Amy from him, I could hold her up to a light and see her organs, I could see her heart, her lung working, and I could see the progress as her meal made it's way through her system. There was obviously no male parts, the light passed right through that area.
Even without the advantage of semi-transparency, I still would have guessed her to be female.
It is seriously that hard to sex easterns visually? No offense but if it's pictures posted on the web, error rates go up. In person, some snakes are obviously male, some obviously female. And sure, there are always a few that are questionable.
congrats on the litter. That's one fine tangled mess of squiggly fun!

I have a whole bunch of eastern squiggles. From what I can tell, the females are significantly larger than the males. That being said, the only other difference I can visually see without turning them upside down is their heads are also very much larger than their male counter parts. This is just a general observation and by no means meant to be taken as concrete. This is just my personal observation with the crew I have.:D

think of it as a way to 100% sure on the sex then 99.9% because that .1% can be hte difference between a happy and angry customer

There is 2 babies without checkered on the background ....I expect few with the dark background ...
I will keep few of them try reproduce it...
BY experience I need to wait one or two shed to have better idea...show you better pictures soon!! tanks all
Jeff B
06-16-2010, 11:47 PM
Yes that sounds very reasonable Charles, wait a couple sheds and see what you have, and then select your holdbacks for whatever trait you want to exploit and try to pass on and enhance through selective breeding. The nice thing is you have the numbers to work with that litter, so mathematically have a good chance to have at least one or two animals that will possess the desired phenotypical outcome.
Jeff B

OK at running the risk of highjacking this post which is about Charles flames babies (Congrats first and already asside) this sexing subject has already highjacked this post, so some enlightening seems to be in NEED.
Size can "sometimes" be right (OFTEN WRONG!!!), tail length, thickness, and proportion can MORE often be right, BUT POPPING BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW MUCH PRESSURE, HOW TO ANGLE THE TAIL, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INVERTED HEMIPENE AND FEMALE SCENT GLANDS, AND POPPING BY SOMEONE WHO HAS DONE SEVERAL HUNDRED VERSUS A COUPLE, AND SEVERAL DOUBLE CHECKS OF THE POPPING IS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY MORE ACCURATE AND VERY RARELY WRONG. Compared to guessing based on looking at the animal......well..... thats just GUESSING period
Don't try to undervalue popping by an experienced breeder, because it is a valuable aspect of purchasing an animal, confidence (or lack of) in sexing can be a deal maker or breaker. The value of a pair versus 2 males is significant. I have sold hundreds of babies which I sexed myself and I have not yet to date had a single customer say they got the wrong sex (knock on wood) and sure it will likely happen, nobody is perfect, but at least it won't be a common occurence, and thats because I take great pride, and put in a lot of time and effort in the quality assurance aspect of sexing, and yes that has value and is or should be worth something to the customer buying my animals.

Oh sorry Richard, I just realized that post might have come across as coming down on someone, that was not my intent, thats not how I operate, I was simple trying to be informative and educational, and state my case for the value of popping right after birth, sometimes I think maybe I come accross as being brash in writing, I'm actually a nice guy in person:) I guess if you asked my wife or friends they would say "no your not":D
