These guys are amazing! They eat eagerly and are equally curious and active as Thamnophis.
They ARE more wiggly though! Taking pictures aren't easy but I'll box or bucket them for better pictures soon. The first pictures were taken my the person I ordered them from...

Thanks guys! And Shannon, that's awesome! If I had more money laying around I would have purchased a miliaris pair as well. Just decided to start with Poecilogyrus.

I've usually only seen them called by their scientific name, but apparently they can be referred to as simply "water snakes".

That's funny because I've also heard them called Brazilian ground snake. One thing's apparently for certain: You can usually find them on the the ground or in water.

I suppose that narrows it down somewhat. It sounds like they were trying to make a clear distinction that this snake is not likely to be encountered in the only two places left; up in trees or deep in caves.

Thanks everybody!

I'm not sure of any good common name but the scientific works for me and tends to be much more accurate. I love these things and hope to get more liophis in the future!

Again, there might be a more appropriate forum for this animal, than a garter snake forum.

Wait... I thought we welcomed other types of snakes that were very similar to garter snakes in their looks and actions in the lounge... And let me tell you keeping these is exactly like keeping garters! The husbandry is practically identical. And I remember that topic coming up and people deciding that snakes with similar habits/husbandry were OK.

I was always under the impression it was just Storyia dekayi(Brown snake) that was basically OK to post about.
I didn't think it went any farther than that though.
If I'm wrong I stand corrected.

I've never figured this out. I thought water snakes were OK... whatever, I'll leave it to the moderators.

Well both storeria and nerodia would definitely be OK. I just could have sworn it applied to other similar snakes too... Like natrix and liophis... I wasn't trying to argue, I was just genuinely asking a question seeing as I definitely remember this having come up before.... It was a long time ago though so my memory coukd just be skewed. I keep liophis P.... They are cool snakes, they are just like garter snakes too.... Their habits and mannerisms, right down to the way they eat and love to swim. Same with the natrix. I alway thought it was incredible how snakes that are very different from one another from separate continents could evolve to be so alike! It makes sense though.

I think it should be fine. There's no "Liophis Poecilogyrus Forum".

"Welcomed" may be the wrong word, but unlike ball python and corn snake threads, these don't get thrown in the "other pets" thread.

to keep down the confusion to thamnophis newcomers and visitors, should we have a separate thread for these kinds of "like garter" species?
I like having these threads that compact the non-thamnophis areas of interest to a manageable cluster

and I am the opposite, I hate those threads that drag on for 037590302 pages and cover multiple snakes/categories/topics... it's just me though... I obsessively divide things into as many unique categories as I can. Then again I also have a bad habit of organizing things by color in spectral order. I can't handle things being all lumped together. I'm a bit strange! :p

I always wondered where to put anything interesting and snake/herping related too, because a lot of the time they aren't pets so I didn't think the 'other pets' thread was right :p I actually thought the lounge didn't have to be garter related talk at all... lol woops

If anyone asked for my vote, I'd vote for a separate board on this site to focus on other "garter-like" snakes, as drache suggested. There are plenty of boards that cover kings/corns/pythons/etc, but not too much focus on things like water snakes, green snakes, brown snakes, or the species mentioned in this thread. The same people who are attracted to garters are probably also predisposed to like these other similar snakes.

I'm a little confused as to the conflict of posting. Like Lora said, isn't the lounge there for non-garter posts? That's what the description states anyway. Is the lounge actually supposed to be non-snake related?

It's been suggested. By yours truly, over a year ago.

Unfortunately, the description is obsolete. If I could change it, I would. It can all be traced back to a time when we had less strict rules about what people could post there, but eventually things got out of hand as pointless crap from the Lounge started to flow over into other sections and started drowing out actual garter discussions. So the moderators, with the admin's blessing, came up with http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/site-news/5067-new-site-rules.html that were intended to put a stop to it. It worked, in part because the worst spammers left in the process. Some of them just couldn't handle being told to "get over it".

The Lounge is for some posts, that happen to be non-garter. Other natricines are tolerated there. Other herps go in the Other Pets thread if they're captive, Nature Photography if they're wild. Other things, like new phones/cars/computers/what's for dinner/what's the weather like and things like that, that don't have anything at all to do with herps or this place as a community, go in the It's oh so quiet thread. That's the random chitchat thread and it's essentially what the whole Lounge used to be.

Existing threads should be used (even if they're not on the first page anymore). Some non-reptile threads that you see around in the Lounge pre-date "the purge" and have been left alone out of pure benevolence.

Nobody's ever been sanctioned for not following these rules. But their threads may or may not be moved, merged, closed, removed etc. without any notice. But I do try to leave temporary redirects, that last from a few hours to a week, depending on how active the original poster is.
