Yesterday I found a package of silversides in my freezer. I had tried them once before & nobody was interested. I have run low on pinkies, so I figured what the heck! I put around 6 of them in with my big snakes and within a minute or two, they were gone! Of course it was the two fat piggy girls that devoured them. Later in the day, Jesse, my Florida Blue male, was still pacing the tank, so I put in another 7 or so. Jesse got one that I saw but the other two came flying out again to partake. I cut some up for the babies and they too ate them all. I love to watch them all eat well. Something else I can offer besides pinkies and worms! YEAH:D

There's nothing like a fishy food frenzy ;)

great news
silversides seem to often do the trick when other fish doesn't

Congrats! Your girls sound like my Ella. Put in 5 huge fuzzies for her and Sly and she ate them all. Put in one more for Sly and there it sits... sigh...

Yeah, poor Jesse is still pacing the tank. I'm going to put more in but I bet he doesn't get a shot at them before the other 2 come racing out! Funny thing is, he will be the closest to the dish!

My concinnus love them. They eat up to 6 large (2inch) silversides in a sitting! Amy (radix) loves them too but she gets little pieces mixed in with her pinky parts since she's only about 11 inches.

Not all frozen silversides are created equally. Go for the flats packed in water with NO supplements. They tend to be better quality. Once thawed, the Sally's silversides look like the fish just came out of the tank. Nice and fresh.

I've only found silversides at petco so far.. and their quality leaves much to be desired. Where do you get yours?

Petco. :D

You're right though. Most of the silversides they had were absolute rubbish. Icy, air in the bags, shriveled up nasty garbage. They had one flat left of Sally's silversides and those were packed in a little water and no air in the bag. The fish looked alive so I bought them. Excellent quality. They even smell fresh.

I got them at Petco. I will have to look for the other kind but for now they will have to do as my alternate supplement.

Maybe I'm just unlucky. All the times I've bought them the fish have been broken to pieces, and foul(not fishy) smelling, among other things. They must not order new stock often because people here don't buy them.

I went to Petco today and they had Sally's so I picked those up. I finished the other package this evening, everybody ate everything!

It helps a lot if you open the package once, take out enough to last a few weeks and keep that separate. Otherwise, every time you open the package you're exposing them to moist air causing them to ice up. I use vaccum freezer bags to make 2 or 3 packages.

In the last package, I had a couple of them that were broken but for the most part they were whole. They had a very strong fishy smell, not foul. I must say they were enjoyed by everyone! Except my cichlid, who I refer to as our piranha:D

Yes, they are way better than any fish I can get right now. They look and smell sweet and fresh. The concinnus trio has been feeding well on them.

I sent the kids to the back yard where there is a "creek" running. They brought back 6 dace minnows on Saturday. Now that's what I call fresh fish! Couple of my guys really enjoyed those.
