While out collecting some earthworms and slugs I came across this little males body. Looks like some predator(cat,raccoon,opossum, hawk,owl) got to him.
Being in the wild is difficult enough but when you're towards the lower end of the food chain it's even harder.

It's a shame the predator was so wasteful.

Aren't the spots that were eaten where the liver and heart are?

I'm not sure that would be the cause. The head and some of the body is missing. The crows in Canada didn't cause near the tissue damage. They first peck the brain and then remove the liver making a hole big enough to remove the organ. I had to euthanize a number of snakes that were still alive after those kinds of attack.
It may have been a crow and then another animal eat some.
