My daughter Gabby and I spent the day in Des Moines. We shared a table with our good friends Mark & Rita. I took a number of my girls(snakes) with we for display purposes. A number of people stopped and asked what kind of snake I was holding. They were surprised when I told them it was a garter snake. They said they didn't think garters were easily handled. My girls were so well behaved. The other comment was how they didn't think garters got that big. When I heard that I would tell them "this isn't big", then I would pick up Speckle. They were amazed by her size and calm attitude. A number of them held her. One of the people that held her was a teenage girl. Her parents came and talked to me later about coming to the Ranch and getting her a garter snake. I hope they don't think they're getting Speckle:eek:
I love to watch the connection between a garter snake and the people who get addicted. This young lady held most of the snakes I took up and she loved everyone of them.

The last 2 shows have shown an increased interest in garters. People are surprised by the color variations, sizes and calm attitudes of the snakes. Other things that makes them more appealing is their heartiness and ease of care. I hope in the future to offer T.radix(Plains garter), T.s.parientalis(Red Sided garter) and T. marcianus(Checkered Garter) for sale. Right now I'm very happy with just having garters present among the flood of Boas, Corns, Geckos and Beardies.
I even had 2 Boa vender's come over and checkout the garters.
I never heard an ill word toward garters the whole day.
All in all it was a good day, spent with nice people.

That's awesome! good work Steve! Sooner or later, anyone who loves animals and is kind to snakes, they come around. Garters are the best. I've kept many types of snakes over the years. As common as they are garters are still my favorite! I'm almost 40 years old and my first snakes were ordinoides at 7 years old. I was hooked. I'll never get off of this "junk" I'm a dopeless hope addict!
