I had an embarrassing moment the other night..

Feeding snakes in a hurry, I broke my own rule and fed a pair of garters in their cage, I kept an eye on this and it all seemed as if it went well.

Long story short, the male had taken his pinkie up under the hide and spat it out, returned and accepted another.

So I finish up and leave the reptile room to get a jug of water to top off water bowls, upon my return the female had the male swallowed down so far that only the very tip of his tail was hanging from the corner of her mouth.

Knowing that any attempt at rescue would be a "waste of time" I just grumbled and walked away....

about 30 minutes later, My daughter came running and said the little guy was looking out from her mouth, and his tongue was flicking!!

Sure enough, the male did a complete turnaround while inside the female, and crawled back out!!!!

I separated them, observed them (off and on) for the next 24 hours, and they both ate several pinks each last night.

30 minutes in the belly of a bigger snake, and the little male is no worse off for it!!

Kicking myself in the arse, as I KNOW BETTER than to try feeding a pair of snakes in the same cage!!

Because of this act of stupidity, I almost lost the het son of the Scheutts albino to the het daughter of Scott's Ery female from Myrtle beach.

Hurrying is the best way to screw up, at anything you do.

whoa, glad he's ok...

He's fine, slammed 4 pinkies last night....

I had gave up hope after seeing his tail sticking out of her mouth... Figured I would probably lose them both.

With the interesting bloodlines, it would have been a real shame.

You did what? It most certainly isn't too late at that point! Now, if you're talking about a constrictor that has already killed it's meal that's one thing, but a snake can and usually does survive being swallowed. Acting quickly will usually save them. I've had snakes "barf up" live lizards and snakes hours after having swallowed them!

d_virginiana
09-01-2011, 10:02 AM
Wow.. Glad he's okay. That's pretty amazing! I wonder how he did that complete turnaround without injuring either of them..

ConcinusMan
09-01-2011, 10:06 AM
It's usually not difficult or injurious to get a snake to reverse course on a meal like that.

BLUESIRTALIS
09-01-2011, 10:10 AM
I would like to also add that if this ever happens and it's too late for the snake that has been eaten then you better make the other snake regurge or it will die too because garters can't digest other snakes and it will start to rot and the snake will also become impacted and then they become very lethargic and die.

ConcinusMan
09-01-2011, 10:21 AM
I was thinking the same thing. That even if the swallowed snake was dead, that it wouldn't be good for the other snake.

Jadis was born almost a year ago when I bred a het for Anery with my orange nose Christmas albino.

The only thing dark on this snake at all is her black eyes with red pupils. The only real white is the stripe down her back, I love the ghost pattern where the black spots would have been.

She is also the "alpha" of her litter, I kept all the babies and Jadis has grown the most & the fastest. She also has the biggest appetite, she's nearly ready for whole pinks, after that the real growth spurt starts.

This is probably a dumb question but is that last snake a red sided? I think Scott was calling them golden or something like that. I owned the original male for a short time and sold him back to Scott because he was nasty and my female died.

No she's not a red sided. I do have a "golden" red sided female and she's super mellow. Just threw jellybeans last week.

The last three pictures are of a Radix I got from Scott that has had a nasty attitude since she was born. She's a special snake to me, a real feisty keep your hands off of me gal.

I have to give her a pinkie to chew on while I take her out for cage cleanings. if not she draws blood, she even pulled a ropeadope on me, and I got nailed picking her up by the tail while she bluffed my other hand and drew my attention away. Smart girl.

Jo the ONLY black necks I keep all are from you, and She is a little spaz at times. She seems to get more defensive as she grows.

They are all such vibrant snakes, and a sheer joy to have around.

On the plus side, I have a major thing for nasty snakes, Attitude makes me want them more.

I have a black racer here that I raised from a hatchling, he is the most "hands off" snake I have ever owned, and I love every minute of it.

Of course, my only experience with them is catching WC. Never tried to keep one. Their response is always the same as the one in the video. Doesn't matter if they're only 8 inches long, they're still ferocious and they aren't bluffing like most garters. Also, they don't seem give up the behavior when they realize it isn't working. If they aren't near water, they'll curl up and strike at you rather than flee. It's funny.

By comparison, I can't remember ever being bitten by a concinnus in the field. They usually just squirm and musk momentarily, then calm right down. Occasionally one will open it's mouth / bluff strike, but even that's rare. The only bites I get from concinnus' are captive ones that mistake my hand for food. LoL.

Easterns will actually strike at you...I have had them strike at me outside and have had Cee Cee do it a few times...most of the time it's just a fake strike...the only time she ever bit me was when she was being a pig and wanted more food. Tonight she got mad when I switched her to her new home and actually lunged across the enclosure at me...it was kind of funny. Most of the times they are just skiddish though and trying to act tough.

Just a quick update...

Midnight (The really dark eastern) passed, as did one of the juvenile blacknecks.

Everyone else is doing great, My "Bad attitude" radix is just as nasty as ever, the Natrix are growing like weeds, both are taking cut up trout with gusto.

Sunshine is a real sweetheart that I will always keep right here next to my computer, and I moved "Spot" from the top of the TV stand to make room for the flat screen that will not fit in the stand.

Other than that it's all the same, pinkies go in, poo comes out.

Aww im sorry to hear that those 2 passed away, do you have an idea of what happened to them?

The eastern "Midnight" was an older girl, so I really didn't give it any thought.

The Blackneck was really unexpected, that snake was only 18 months old.

Had to share this... My 2011 male Infernalis whom has stubbornly refused to eat anything but live fish ate 2 pinkies today!! Unscented at that. Hopefully he will continue this trend.

He's been a stubborn feeder since day one. Maybe he will start to actually grow for me now.

I'll take this as confirmation that individuals of any species can be fussy... I had infernalis pegged as ravenous feeders.

Not this one, he would eat 1 or 2 small guppies, go off feed for DAYS, eat 1 or 2 small guppies, repeat..
