Last evening, very late I went down to the big snake room. I had put my scrubs to bed about 3 hours before. I need to use my computer but yet I didn't want to disturb my snakes so I only used the TV/computer monitor for lighting. This meant the enclosure fans, floor fan and radio were all off.
While I worked on the computer I heard the sounds of my snakes. Moving in and out of hides and crawling through the artificial vines.
Then there was the ever present sounds of my big snakes defecating(pooping). I found myself laughing out loud at the sounds. All different and gross in themselves. It reminded me of the times I used to blow air on my kids bellies and it would make a farting sound. We would laugh until we hurt. These were the same kind of sound my big radixes were making. I couldn't concentrate on what I was working on and had to go back up stairs. Worms had been on the menu the day before and sound were particularly wet in nature. It was a riot.:D

I remember some nature show I was watching about the odd habits of animals, mentioning that the Sonoran Coral snake ( I think it was Sonoran ) has another defense tactic besides its venom : explosive, LOUD farting! I was just wondering how nature decided that deadly venom wasn't enough in this instance, that it needed more besides to insure this animal's survival and where in the world it thought that FARTING would be a good defense????

P.S. So is this what I have to look forward to when I get a garter??? How much AROMA is accompanied by this??? Will I have to buy extra scented candles and incense?? I thought the horses were bad!

Very little smell at all. Using the right substrate should keep most smells to a minimum.
Pooping and musking are to different things. If their feces smelled like musk it would be a different story:eek:

I've not noticed farting among my snakes, but when the larger ones take a dump I can definitely hear it
there is a story in some book I read in which a hot-shot young martial artist is overcome by the fart of a fat slob who had honed his diet to produce the most deadly mixture of methane gases the human body can manufacture

I've don't recall ever actually hearing my garters poop. That goes for even large garters of 3-4 feet long.

However... my jaw hit the floor and I LoL'd the first time I hear Jewels leave a big present for me. She likes to press her bass up against the glass and let it rip. I have to tell you, sometimes it's louder than I am. A nice wet sounding squish that reverberates throught the room. I was like WT?...!!!

It's not rude, just good food!

Like a beautiful woman, I could let that slide. Those snakes are gorgeous.

Anyway snakeknot, garter poop definitely doesn't smell pleasant. But niether does any other snake poop. I always check every day and clean up immediately whenever possible. It does stink. Jewels, (milk snake) poops and it has this terrible pungeant urine odor worse then cat pee, or it consists mostly of digested rodent meat and it smells like a rotting carcass. It's pretty bad. Still, with the right absorbent substrate and dilligent cleaning, it's not a problem. My tanks and my room do not stink.

Hey, I'm not afraid of cleaning it up. ( I own horses remember? 3 very filthy horses!) I have noticed that the bigger the snake the stinkier the poop! Draco lives in the living room. 2 days after he eats, he takes a nice humpty, dumpty and I can tell the minute he does it and it doesn't stay in the tank long. ( His bowels decided to let loose one day while I was holding him and he crapped right next to my ear! I don't know which was worse, the sound or the smell! )

OMG! This has got to be the funniest thread I've ever read!! "Toilet humor" is funny as it is, but i never imagined it could cross over into the snake world. I've only seen Scylla poop a couple times, and once she did make a little bit of noise. Yes- I laughed. :-D

It's cheap entertainment around here. We time it about 2 days after a big feed.
All the lights and fans are all off in the big snake room. It doesn't stay quiet for very long.:D:eek:

I think I have to contest that. Osprey poo is worse! They eat lots of fish and they have projectile poo to keep the nest clean. Not a good combination for an indoor animal cage!

I'm very familiar with the clean-up of various animal's refuse with the different jobs I've done.

once found a snake I didn't even know was lost because he pooped while in transit from one bookcase to another, and I heard the dripping
this was in an apartment where we'd had a history of leaks from above, including one that involved liquid concrete oozing down a heater pipe, so naturally I went to investigate the dripping sound right away, and when I got to it, at first it looked a lot like the concrete, except I couldn't figure out where it would have come from until I caught a glimpse of my king snake's rear end . . . and the smell . . .

Naaahh! It's not so bad. One of the least messy/stinky snakes I've owned.(pituophis cantenifer) I'll assume you meant gopher and/or bull snakes.

They can be a joy. I like their spirit. Not so messy, not so stinky in my experience, and I certainly never heard one "let it rip"

They're at it again. I'm sitting here right next to the male enclosure and I hear this high pitched noise. I can't describe it. Wait, I guess I can describe it.
You know those funny sounds a balloon make when you fill it with air and then let it out by pulling on the opening of the balloon. That's what it sounded like.
I look over and see one of my boys with his tail in the air.
He had some bad gas:D
I love my snakes, they are so much fun.

In this household, they tend to do in the bowl immediately after a water change.

Ditto. I guess it's not a coincidence that I also change the water when I clean the cage. But seriously, I think it's the excitement and the moving around because every time I take my big one's out for some exercise in the yard (I like to let them "run" now and then to keep them in shape) they pause in the yard and take a dump. Every time.

guidofatherof5

Speaking of dumps in the yard.
I took one of my big Hypo Bull Snakes out for some fresh air and she took a bigger dump than my dog in the yard.:D

ConcinusMan

I don't doubt that. My dogs are so small, a 4 foot snake makes a bigger dump.

This is some wonderful conversation. I think it's about my dinner time too.

Not quite related but both of my geckos have potty trained themselves. They each have an empty tissue box in their tanks as hides but for the past month or so they have been nearly exclusively been using the boxes as toilets! It's very rare to find a doodle outside of the box now.

I actually panicked a bit last time I went to spot clean their tanks and couldn't find any poops! I picked up the boxes to switch them with new ones and was surprised by the amount of rattling. Fulla little dried up poopers!

Very little child labor is used in the day to day running of the Ranch. They have school(homework, grades) and their own chores to take care of.
They are always good about helping when I ask.;)

make them do science fair, ap classes and go for scholorships. im taking almost all AP classes (for fine arts credit im in music theory ap and i found out im a baratone!!!!!)
science fair can really give them an edge in the competition to get into college...along with community service hours and a C in an AP class is valued higher than an A in a preAP or a normal class! also if you score a three four or five on the AP exam for the AP classes at the end of the year you are eligable for scholorships!
9im on route for a distinguishe diploma like all of the kids in the sciencwe academy if you need any info on education or things to give your kids an edge to get into college let me know!(just make sure yall can afford the payments of college)

I told my kids to remember two words when it comes to college, "Pell Grants"
Dad won't be able to afford things like college. Single income(now retired income) with 5 kids at home doesn't go very far.

pell grants?

Free money for school. Out of about $8,000 I spent on school a while back, the feds paid about $1,000 by a pell grant. Pell grants typically cover very little of the total cost.

From what I hear there are alot of things out there. Do you have any family background that makes you a minority? There are many scholarships under those. My eldest qualifies for scholarships like that because her father's side is of a cuban and puerto-rican background. She can consider herself to be "hispanic". (Though she looks as completely scandinavian as she can be-my side!!!)

Go for any point you can get and don't be afraid to access the grants, etc that are available. Too many people don't and the money sits there.
