Proper I.D.

So now that I've fallen in love and know what type of garter to shoot for, I need to know the proper Latin name for it. The snake I looked at this weekend was simply listed as "Albino Checkered Garter". ( Their booth was VERY BUSY! I almost had to wait in line to ask to see her and she was the only garter they had! ) If I had had more $$$$ I might have come home with her, although I'd much rather have a snake that was better socialized to handling than her. I'm not that sure that frequent handling would have fixed her.

Anyway, if you could attach pics to your reply, that would be most helpful.

You might have caught the girl on a bad day. Most garters can be very social but I'm sure there are exceptions to that.
The albino checkereds I have are very social. I think a lot of it comes from how much handling/interaction they get.
I know that with my radixes, the more time I spend with them the more docile/social they get.
Please, let us know when you've found your new friend and of course photos are manditory.:D

They are a very docile and easy to take care of species. My females more so she enjoys 2 things food and handling. I don't handle mine to much but when i do there is no flee response just a curiouse enjoyment to my warmth.As young they readily took guppies from my hand and were easy to switch to ft pinkies and nightcrawlers as they grew. If you get more then one they love to fight over food so feed them singlely Choose an active alert one if you can. knowledgeable care sheets and breeders on this forum can help you more.

The one I looked at was an adult for sale for $75.00. Is that an appropriate price? What do babies run?? The booth I saw this one at was the same people I bought Draco, my favorite amel corn from. They buy, sell and trade in snakes so a lot of times they can't tell you the history on their snakes.

I got mine at a reptile expo here in va. the females were a few months old at 50.00 for the pair and my males were from 2 other venders from PA. AND VA. at 15.00 for the normal hets. and 20.00 a piece for the albino males. You can see my crew if you search the gallery for marcianus and my marcys in my photo album. I like to get them while young to watch them grow and checkereds do grow fast!

Yes, I may end up having some if my wee het male can get 'er done! Haha... if not, I will try my "hypo" male on them, results would be hypos and normals HET albino.

Checkereds are an excellent choice, albino or not. I have to narrow down my list of desired garters or it could get out of control very easily. One or a pair of checkereds, I will always have room for.

Let me see, if I get a male radix, het for iowa albino, there's a pair. A pair of concinnus comming soon is without question. Next acqusisions would be one or a pair of checkereds, and hopefully, a flame eastern or two. Oh, and...

See what I mean? but yeah, marcianus (checkered garter) is on my top priority list.

checker issocial but is a wc and ittl take a while before he looses his gotagetaway instinct...but he dosnt always try to anymore big improvment!
