Greetings everyone. I think I may have a garter snake problem. Tonight I found what appears to be a baby garter in my basement. The reason I find this weird is because it is the dead of winter in Nebraska so it has got me thinking there has to be some big ones as well, although I hope not . I was just hoping someone could shed some light on the situation for me and let me know ways it maybe got there. The snake is green and yellow and it appears to be about 8 - 10 inches in length. Thats more of a guess as it is semi curled up. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Also, sorry if I made a double thread, my other didn't appear

The first few posts by new members need to be validated by a moderator before they are published.

The baby would have been born in late summer, I doubt there are any big ones around. The spaces they can fit through, are remarkably small. All it really needs, is a crack about half as wide as its head is high, or a round hole with the same diameter as its head.

Thanks, stefan and sorry about that. I noticed the post thing after I did my second one. It would have had to gotten in the house around 2 months ago at the earliest due to the fact it's incredibly cold here. It seems incredibly small to be that old, then again I don't know a lot about snakes.

They are pretty small when they're born and they often don't have much time to grow before winter.

Thanks for the help Stefan, It's much appreciated. I hope that's the case, I have no idea where any others could be hiding downstairs. Anyone know any places in Nebraska that I could give it to so it can be cared for until spring. I don't wanna kill the little fella

Welcome to the forum. What city are you in? I'm across the river in Council Bluffs. If I can assist you and we're close, feel free to contact me. I'll take a look at your snake in person if you want.
A good place to start might be the care sheet provided on the forum homepage . Here's a link to that page. http://www.thamnophis.com/caresheets/index.php?title=Garter_Snake_Care_Sheet

Nice, I have family there. We'll I live in Lincoln but I'm out west at my parents in Ogallala for a few weeks. I'm sad to say I don't think he made it :(. I can't say for sure, but when we caught he seemed in pretty poor condition and didn't put up a fight. My cat was also around him before so I'm not sure if she hurt him or not. It sucks, even though I'm scared to death of snakes the little guy(or lady) was actually pretty cute.

Thanks anyways guido

Sorry to hear he/she may have passed away. It sounds like you might not be as afraid of them as you think. When you get back to Lincoln keep in mind I will get you started with a garter snake if you want. I'll provide you one of my T.radix(Plains Garter Snake).
Thanks for being concerned for the little scrub. Sometimes the place they choose to hide from the cold doesn't workout to be a good place. Probably a dehydration issue.
