I decided it was time to start a thread dedicated to animal and nature related videos and channels that people have found on YouTube and other similar video sharing sites.

A few basic rules:

- Include a short description of the video you're linking to.

- For now, just about any type of animal or nature video can be posted, the video doesn't have to be about garters.

- You don't have to post your own garter related videos in this thread. But if you find somebody else's, this is the best place to put them.

- Feeding videos are okay, but should be in good taste. If they wouldn't show similar stuff on your average nature show, think twice before posting it. However, that we are a bit more thick-skinned than the average person, will be taken into consideration.

- If a video clearly features animal abuse or glorifies killing, don't post it. If people in the comment section of that video have to declare that what's happening in the video is "nature", it's not a good idea to post it. If I hear Drowning Pool - Bodies, it's gone.

- If you've found a video that angers you, don't post it here.

- No rickrolling.

Decisions will of course be made on a case-by-case basis and the rules will be updated if necessary.

This is a good idea. I really enjoy the videos our members post. It would be nice to have them all in one sticky thread.
So do you think it might be a good idea to move some other threads to this one? Such as these video posts: http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/general-talk/6395-video-segment-radix-conservation.html

http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/garter-snake-lounge/6311-so-what-kinda-snake-guy.html

http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/garter-snake-lounge/6324-striped-gopher-vs-rabbit-wild-encounter.html

Or are we going to leave those alone and just post ours/others' nature/snake videos here from now on?

We'll leave those alone and just stick to this one from now on. If something deserving of its own thread gets posted, I'll split the thread. Linking to them is okay.

I'll assume that commenting and discussion on the videos here is OK too. (subject to moderation of course)

Nice series of vids about Florida's vemomous snakes. It's nice to see them portrayed with some sense of neutrality instead of over-dramatizing the dangers due to their venomous nature like many shows do. You know, there was no "let the bodies hit the floor" soundtrack stuff going on. Nobody yelling "crikey!" and teasing them either.

I guess this is as good a place as any to post the latest feeding of my Pueblan milk snake, "Jewels" I replaced the audio (tastefully) due to my foul mouth and other reasons. (Okay, I farted. Let's not make a case out of it) JK.

That lousy substrate will be replaced in a day or two after she digests her meal a bit. Right now she needs her privacy. Good news is, no substrate was swallowed, the and the snake was uninjured and she now has a nice healthy bulge in her belly. I'll try to make it safer for the snake, and more humane for the mouse next time.

I know I made mistakes. I just can't be as awesome and as perfect as the snake. I can only hope to be wise enough to learn from them. After all, I'm only human!

Ironically, I'm posting part 2 first; the actual swallowing of the food. Part 1 is nearly 10 minutes long and well, is it really necessary to see that part? probably not. I'll leave that up to you since you know my youtube screen name. Part 1 is more revealing. She tries to eat my hand. Twice. But hey. I love her anyway.

I have just watched the ten sections.... It is a great movie. Not only the snakes and information is wonderful but also the film shooting is extremely pro. It is really hard to do such a movie especially since most of it was shot outside and not in a studio.

Thanks stefan for the film it is really good and helpful. Hope to see your next find on you tube ;)

OK, I hope Shannon doesn't have me "strung up" for this. Perhaps instead, she'll just send her snakes to me to have me "taken care of" ??? I've been wanting to do this for some time now and I finally got it right. If she objects, I'll remove it immediately of course.

It's a clip I edited out of her snake room tour video and posted on my channel:

Well...

Too late. I also already posted it here. But I did send her a PM.

The thing that ticks me off is when people post others' videos and call it "ORIGINAL" and make no effort to credit the owner of the original. I mean, even if it falls under "fair use" it's common courtesy to give credit where it is due even if it's not required. I know all about the "fair use" thing. I've contested youtube's copyright infringement before and got videos posted to my channel after quoting fair use laws in my appeal.

I guess my point is, it's gone if she objects, regardless of "fair use" but I think I'll keep the clip, only it will not be available to "everyone"

What file format are you using and is the file extension correct for that format?

ConcinusMan
04-21-2010, 12:53 PM
same as all my other videos. .MOV (contains mpeg-4 video stream and AAC audio stream) and latest try was only 2 min. video.

Stefan-A
04-21-2010, 01:14 PM
Try converting it to .wmv. It's a relatively simple way of testing whether the problem is with the file format.

ConcinusMan
04-26-2010, 12:14 AM
Yeah, I tried that before and even at an outrageous bit rate, once youtube gets done with the conversion, it looks like crap. After I figured out that youtube takes my camera's file containter (.MOV) and video specs, I started uploading them without converting to WMV. Many changes to the site were made, and all the sudden my MOV files won't upload.

I did go ahead and convert to WMV and finally got a successful upload. I'm not very happy with the result but it's better than nothing:

ConcinusMan

NO. I don't have any kind of google account. According to them, the email address I'm using to register my youtube account was also used to register a google account at some point and they are probably right. I don't recall doing it and theres only one possible reason for my not missing that account. Probably found it pointless and useless. Either way, I don't know the google username or password and I can't seem to get it. If I had one, it was more than 9 years ago.

ConcinusMan

Afraid not. That's what I'm saying, I'm pretty much S.O.L. They say I have a google account already so I cannot create a new one and keep my identity on youtube, and I tried everything to get them to email the username and password to me, but that's not happening either. So far, my browser still lets me automatically sign into youtube. If it wasn't for that, I'd be locked out. All because the idiots can't leave well enough alone and they keep changing stuff that was fine the way it was.

Stefan-A
05-04-2010, 05:48 PM
YT is really circling the drain, it seems. The least they could do, is to have at least some form of user support that involves actual humans.

Not that it matters. Rumor has it that they're phasing the You out of YouTube and moving towards a Hulu-type solution. Eventually. Among the rumors, is that they're going to start removing videos that haven't gotten more than X views in Y months. So far the rumors regarding the changes to the layout and the rating system have turned out to be true. But these are rumors and the "HuluTube" rumor didn't happen last year when it was "supposed to".

ConcinusMan

Yeah, that male hypoery concinnus wasn't even hungry at all. He's still quite full from yesterday. He ate 4 large silversides, a pinky, and several night crawlers. There's no way he was hungry but he just couldn't resist the urge to take what the other was getting. So pushy. So funny. And this is a guy who wouldn't eat at all for a month after coming out of brumation. He was so thin and I was worried. No worries now, that's for sure.

Any tips for uploading videos to youtube? Got the new camera, took some awesome video 1280 X 720. Looks and sounds awesome. Tried converting to recommended (by youtube) formats, tried uploading original format, tried everything. Same result every time - Upload failed - unknown error.

Starting to think that for youtube, my now HD videos are useless. What gives? I don't get it.

Well, you'd guarantee that any parasites are dead and that it's thiaminase-free. The downside is that the fish is likely to fall apart from the slightest touch.

I stopped shooting video and pulled it off of his head. He finally got a breath and went completely limp. I thought he was dead. He made it though!

I'm pretty sure they're smart enough that they don't handle them. At least, they don't in any zoo I've ever been to. They open a special door and send in a torrent of "rain" forcing the snake into a hide box before cleaning the enclosure. I mean, they avoid handling the snakes at all costs. There are very few situations where directly handling them is necessary.

Pretty hard to extract venom without handling. Or medicate an animal.

How about those who produce it?

ConcinusMan
12-08-2010, 06:18 PM
That's a different story. It's one of very few times when handling is necessary. Furthermore this is not done by the zoos generally. They buy their antivenom, and of course, they have it on hand but still avoid handling, and in many cases, never handle the snakes and never give them the opportunity to bite anyone. You still don't want to get bit. The antivenom can safe your life, but it's still a medical emergency which can result in loss of limbs, even with the antivenom, and so, not a good idea to invite a bite.

The people that make that stuff are highly trained handlers.. many of them immune or all but immune to venom due to self-inoculation of small doses, or from being bitten before.

Stefan-A
12-08-2010, 06:37 PM
That's a different story.
That story is actually this story.

ConcinusMan
12-08-2010, 06:47 PM
Jeez Stefan, sometimes you say things that just leave me flabbergasted. What I mean is, a zoo is not a place that specializes in making anti venom. They don't have to handle snakes in that way.

So what's the story with this guy that got bit anyway? Any good reason for trying to tube an angry viper? probably not.

So that's what you were saying when you specified Kentucky zoo.

Always pointing out exceptions.

The site does say however..."The main purpose of Kentucky Reptile Zoo is the production of venom towards pharmaceutical research"

Well that's definitely not the main purpose of most zoos. Also, I might point out that I've seen more modern venom extraction procedures and they still don't require any handling of the reptiles at all so nobody should be getting bit. That guy in the video was asking for trouble. My point is, it was no accident. He handled the snake and knew the risk and so I don't really call that an accident. I mean, I could cross at the crosswalk and probably be fine, but this guy ran out into trafffic, so to speak.

I actually didn't know about some of those definitions. But still, seems to me that there's conditions in the definitions that I was getting at. "unforseen" & "unexpected". Neither of those words should have applied being how he was messing around with an angry venomous snake and that's what I was getting at.

I sure as heck wouldn't call it an accident if I ran out into a busy street, knowing what could happen, and then got hit by a car. That's not an accident. Getting hit would have to have been unexpected and/or unforeseen to call it an accident, wouldn't it?

I think the same thing applies to someone who is willingly handling a venomous snake. Nobody is surprised he got bit. It was foreseeable and maybe even expected.

So, I asked the guy (comment pending approval) why he was handling such a dangerous snake in the first place ("Members of this genus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus) are responsible for more fatalities in the Americas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas) than any other group of venomous snakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venomous_snake)") but then I'm listening and it sounds like perhaps he was doing this for a TV show? Animal Planet Fatal Attraction. In other words, showing off and taking risks for the sake of entertainment. I don't even know what to say about that. Almost makes me want to have more sympathy for the snake than for him.

Would serve him right if he lost that hand, but it does look pretty good so I don't think that will happen.

Oh jeez. nevermind. He works at the KY reptile zoo. Still, isn't there some way to get venom without taking such risks? I mean, the guy has been envenomated several times and has already lost fingers.

I'm sure it is. I only spent 3 days in the hospital, to save 2 fingers from a staph infection. (nearly lost one of them) Similar things had to be done (lancing, packing, and antibiotics). The bill was astronomically high. I'm sure this bill was much higher. I'm pretty sure he has insurance. Jeez, I wonder what kind of rate they pay with an occupation like that. Can't be cheap.

I cant add anymore light. I had every single light on in my room. He is actually mostly black. His stripe is faintly there and its whitish. He's more vibrantly black with hardly any stripe and Tiny has a bold stripe and is a lighter shade. It's very interesting to see the difference in them, isn't it? Maybe later I'll get a picture of them both and put it on my thread.
I'll also get a video of my lovely concinnus babies. ;)

I do have basking lamps, but Squirt's quarantined from the rest of the babies and is in a plastic enclosure. He's on a heating pad for now. It is time for him to go in with the others now, though. That is, if they accept him and he wants to be in there. If he's scared I'll probably keep him in the plastic enclosure.

You see Chantel? Your snakes are just like mine. Stick that hemostat in their face, and they strike without hesitation! "Om, nom, nom"

Of course, after a while of having them, all I have to do is walk in the room or open the screen and all their little heads are looking up to see whats on the menu.

First and foremost that rule is meant to spare me the agony of having to listen to that song one more time. Sometimes it seems that every second video has it (two thirds of all snake videos), because it was the "best" of a very, very small number of metal songs that could be found in audioswap. But like I said in the comment section of that video, the version sung by the parrot was the best version I've heard so far. That people use it to glorify killing is also true.

I'm thinking of banning all versions of "Last Christmas", too. :D

I wouldn't have enforced the "no Bodies" rule. It's a joke.

He's owned it for 14 years supposedly. It doesn't look that old, but I've never been anywhere close to a rattler so I don't know how big they even get. It is actually somewhat amazing that he can hold it at all without it trying to kill him but... A rattler isn't a pet... but neither are garters. (They're the owners...) :D

ConcinusMan
12-28-2010, 12:14 AM
Really not that amazing. He even admits it bit him once and put him in the hospital. A reluctance to bite is not what I call "tame" which is what he claims this snake to be. The snake was clearly irritated by the handling.

When I was much younger and dumber, I handled small rattlers in San Diego (Crotalis ruber) that were a heck of a lot more tolerant to handling than that snake. They wouldn't even rattle or show any signs of being annoyed and they were wild. I still wouldn't call them "tame" and I sure as heck wouldn't call one a pet.

kibakiba
12-28-2010, 03:03 AM
I read that already. And I can tell it's irritated by the fact it doesn't stop rattling, but any time I had seen a rattler on tv or something, it stuck at anything that moved around it. I'd never call one a pet either, they're too dangerous. Even if it were raised 100% in captivity I doubt it'd be "tame"

Ab Fab, French & Saunders, Black Adder, Two pints and a packet of crisps, Father Ted, New Statesman, Young Ones and Mr. Bean would be utterly ruined if "Americanized"

Those fine comedies need to remain uniquely British.

Mt. Mang Pit-vipers is a rare snakes dwelling on Mt. Mang of Hunan. According to recent research, the population of this snake is 300-500. So it is even rarer than wild giant pandas. Mt. Mang Pit-vipers have basically become extinct after the snow disaster in 2008. As the Director of Research Institute of Mt. They're OK I guess.;) Still, if I were to have a choice between those and a northwest T.s.fitchi, I think I like the fitchi better.

They vary just like parietalis but this is what they look like in much of WA and Oregon. Very pretty fitchi here, if I travel east and leave concinnus' range.

Well they (fitchi) are a heck of a lot more widespread in the northwest than any other garter snake. It's kind of interesting that they do not occur west of the cascade range in WA though. They are restricted to the much drier climate found in eastern WA and Oregon.

YW but it only covers the northwest. I wish I had a map showing the full extent of their range. This map doesn't actually show that there is a mountain range right down the middle of WA and OR that actually keeps the range of fitchi and concinnus separated. It's green, forested, and wet on the west side, and on the east side it's desert.

I think it's always funny seeing people both mis-identify snakes, and be complete wimps about them.

For instance the joke:
Why do babies like cobras ?
Because they come with their own rattle !

As you all know, Cobras have rattles... duh, right? Everybody know that:rolleyes:

I saw a video where someone, who was a local "snake expert" found this "copperhead", and picked it up and made a fool of himself when... He found out it was a banded water snake.

As for the wimpy part... here's a video I found kind of funny. In 2 parts.

First I'll say this. When you read the description, it'll say "this guy (husband of photographer) has always been scared of snakes. But now is learning to appreciate them and remove, not kill them."
So... kudos to him. Reminds me of my dad. He was the same way when I got into snakes.

Appreciate the help, Wayne. That's what I've been doing the whole time. Don't know why it's not working. It used to. Sigh.

I know, and it's a freaking water snake. The baby release was equally pitiful. The way he set him down.
