I thought it was pretty cool. I hope he does one for kingsnakes...
Here's a link to where you can find it:

Very cool... has anyone actually seen a green ordinoides like that?
Wow! I'll take a green and a blue please :)

Brian, don't know if you've seen this one: http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/garter-snake-lounge/2371-thamnophis-picture-poster-project-3.html#post75604

I'd love to have that, but OUCH! the price. I have never seen one with green like that, or one as blue as that, but I've seen them bluish that look sort of like count dewclaw's avatar. See the video I uploaded to youtube: YouTube - I lick you! Can we be friends? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXxGyx1OIvU)
The video doesn't do it justice, he gave the impression of being "washed" in a sky blue color in real life.

I've also seen speckled or checkered-looking one's with no stripes, and of course, twice I found melanistics like the one on the poster. No green though. At least there aren't any like that around here. But yeah, the variations are amazing. I had a female that gave birth to 7 young. Only 2 of them were alike!

trying to figure out whether the price includes shipping
I put one in the cart and was informed that paypal is having problems with the seller - will have to contact them

That's funny...I told him the price was too low. It should be 19.95. He prints them in small numbers, so they cost a lot...

It's just a piece of paper. I understand. I produce some things which I won't mention here, that are costly to produce, but then you look at what they are made of, it's tough to justify the cost. And so, I only produce said product for those that can't live without it because it's just so darn cool. Once I get past a few produced, the cost goes way down.

I think that poster is way cool. And it's something I am interested in having. I'm just not willing to step over that line that makes me pay what amounts to $20 for a poster. I think I'll wait 'till spring when I can get some awesome photo's of ordinoides (and other garters) and make my own! Of course, if I actually do that, everyone on the forum would be welcome to have one AT COST.

I ordered one. It seems to include shipping. I did have an issue trying to do it via paypal but there's an alternate payment option which put the transaction through google, which was painless to set up (took maybe 2 minutes)

thanks for that info
if it includes shipping that makes it okay

I did finally end up getting the Thamnophis poster. Thanks Rhea. Now you know, I can't let it hang there without getting this ordinoides poster too. Oh, and there's the CA king snake poster. Oh, and I got ideas for about a dozen others. Jeez, where's this going. I'm afraid to ask.

PM me and I might be able to provide that in the near future. In trade for the polymorphism poster perhaps? ALL but the very blue one and the green one are possibilities.

Just to clarify, we shifted conversation to the polymorphism ordinoides poster but before that we were talking about the thamnophis poster.

Which one did you get Spankenstyne?

I loke the green one a lot, but the red dorsal stripe is my favourite, and there's three of them from different locations

I think it started with the polymorphism poster and it's been going back and forth a bit

fyi - the polymorphism poster is slightly smaller and printed on actual photo paper

Sorry no green one's around here. I've never seen a green one anywhere in OR or WA. Nor have I seen one that was very dark blue.

There are lots of red or dark orange striped one's (on a dark background) around here. The kids call them "red racers". Some are are marked with lot's of "flecks" of the same color too. They are among my favorite morphs and are pretty common. In addition, I have found 2 melanistic one's, and one that had nice pale blue neck, throat, and dorsal stripe. They are usually available in March. Like I said, PM me and I can give you more details. Maybe we can swap shipping costs for that poster. ;)

Just to clarify, I don't think I have to tell you that you probably cannot selectively breed for the specific color. I once bred two very similar ordinoides, and got all kinds of offspring. Only one or two were similar to the parents.

I grew up near Vancouver BC and the ones with the orange & reddish stripes were always referred to as "Red racers" in the area when I was a kid as well. Seems funny now but that was a long time ago ;)
I think it was a regional thing.

I am so happy to find out they're not rare
I just love the dark orange/red stripes, and if they have orange flecks - that's really cool

Not rare locally anyway. In the summer, around here, if you encounter a garter at all, it's very likely to be a drab colored ordinoides. Nothing special.

If you're lucky enough to stumble upon their den sites in spring or fall, when hundreds are gathering,(and breeding) it seems that at least half of them have brilliant orange or red stripes around here.

ugh, vagrans...They make me sick!

No seriously....Would any of the yanks be able to make such a poster for T.s.parietalis? I would be very/extremely gratefull!

drache
01-20-2010, 02:26 PM
you'd have to have to live where they are, to find that kind of variety
I'd love one for T.s.sirtalis for sure, and for that one would have to live all over the place
but for us on the forum - we could pool our resources (garter photos) just like when they did the thamnophis picture poster project

ConcinusMan

This is what I was talking about before. We can't possibly cover every variety even if the poster is only ONE ssp. when it comes to certain garters. I got this idea, and that idea, and...

Well, T.s. concinnus is variable by location, but not enough to fill a poster unless you have large high-res pics. And then there's T.s. sirtalis. Now that might have enough variation to fill a poster.

So here's an idea: Let's start collecting pics of of ONLY T.s. sirtalis morphs.
Then we can head west and make more posters (as necessary) of various T.s. sirtalis from different parts of the country as we head west, placing the northermost morphs at the top of the posters, and the southernmost morphs at the bottom, roughly. If we fill a poster, continue west with a new poster. Just a rough idea. Buyers of the posters can collect to make their wall complete.

Another variation of the idea could be to make posters heading east to west, and make the posters to include any thamnophis (except for ribbon snakes) which are most common in each section of the U.S.A. So, T.s. sirtalis morphs for east coast poster, T. radix for the midwest, then continue...

Bah, they're vagrans food. ;)

I must admit, they are so plentiful, and so "ordinary" I have also used them as food for other herps. :o I've even seen American Robins (a bird) feasting on the young (as they were being born) of ordinoides in late summer near the dens.
