This is hilarious. Just thought I would share. Could be a rat snake. In fact, upon further examination I think it's a rat snake. No matter, funny anyway.

No, not funny for the snake, but I really admire the rabbit's spirit! If it were me, I would of course, have interfered and grabbed that snake! At the same time, by not interfering, we were treated with quite the spectacle!

No, I've seen coachwhips many times and in my opinion, that is either a gopher snake or a rat snake. It's too thick and a coachwhip moves differently and generally won't stand it's ground like that unless cornered, preferring to bolt rather than fight. In that type of terrain, a rat snake or gopher snake won't hesitate to climb a tree to escape, and that snake didn't look very skilled at it. A coachwhip would have been half way up that tree in a matter of seconds. Anyway, look closely as the snake tries to climb. For a second there, you can see the snake is yellowish in color with black markings, like a gopher snake. In the beginning, it looked striped, and very well might be just laterally, but dorsally, looks like blotches. Looks like perfect hunting grounds for a gopher snake, but it looks like the hunter became the hunted!

OK, what do you think of this one? good way to test your garter ID skills. What garter do you think this is? YouTube - Snake in Pool (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcBYubsNLpw)

The poster of the video is operating in Pennsylvania and I think the truck had the text "Telford" on it, so I'd say eastern garter is a pretty safe bet.

Great observation skills Stefan! as always, I have high respect of your opinion. You know, I know it's kind of cruel, both to the snakes, and the human victim, but when I was a kid I used to take advantage of peoples' fear of snakes, like that guy did to his wife, with the plant leaf, but I used to scoop up dozens of garters and place them in closing mailboxes. Particularly mailboxes of people I didn't care for, and had an irrational fear of snakes. Sometimes I'd go to the library and release a half dozen or so. I'd sit back and watch the mayhem unfold. Most of the time, the box got left open while the human victim ran, screaming, and the snakes were able to get out to safety, or someone staffing the library would pick them up and put them outside. It was fun.
