 ... well, none of the potential brumators are on the cards for breeding next year .... should I still brumate regardless just to get my posse used to the experience?

If they're still eating as usual, I wouldn't necessarily subject them to it. It's a significant source of mortality in the wild and clearly taxing.

I wish. If I hadn't already wasted my time on my BEng, I'd go for that doctorate.

Depends on who you ask I suppose. If I wanted them to breed I kept them at 50-60 for 3-4 months solid. Occasionally (not on purpose) it got down into the mid-upper 40's. Now that's clearly taxing and could be skipped. Even if I wasn't looking for a breeding response, they still knew it wasn't summer because they still received cooler than average temps, and fewer hours of bottom/basking light heat and of course smaller, less frequent meals. But then, all I had to do was nothing. The room naturally stayed pretty cold in the winter. I just chose to do this as a personal choice I suppose. Giving them an endless summer just seems unnatural since they aren't even active in my area for over half the year, but if I had to stick them in a fridge to accomplish a change of season, it would be full out brumation or nothing.
