Make a garter snake do something:D Always joking around, Robert.
We don't make them do anything, in fact it the other way around.
I have many that are very active after the lights go out.

Scylla has odd hours too, but she seems more a "dusk & dawn" snake than anything. I eventually took one of the hides out of the tank, because she'd hide ALL day. Once I disturb her though, she stays out & about, and cruises around the tank, basks under the lights, etc. Her appetite seems to have died off too, but I think (from what I've read here) it's her "internal clock" telling her it's turning Fall.

Scylla is finally calming down, though she still "runs" when i put my hands in to pick her up. She's figuring stuff out though (like how to wedge up in between the lip of the tank and the lid), and now looks up at me when I take the lid off of the tank; she actually crawls up the branches to get closer to the open top. I think she's probably more curious being out of the tank, than panicked.
Being so active and alert is why I like garters and other non-exotics; seems like pythons, boas, etc. just kinda lay around, never in a big hurry to do anything except maybe eat. LOL I've never owned any, so it's just an impression I have. Compared to garters, they just seem lazy! :D

That's why many of use like them also. Like little kids always into something. Sometimes mine give me this look, like "I didn't do it"
I have one giving me the "open this thing up" look. Well, got to go open that thing up.

No, they were fed this morning. I opened it up, they came out and crawled up my arms, once around the neck and back into the enclosures. Now everyones resting away from the glass. Sometimes they crawl onto my shoulders and just sit there. For the most part I can go about my duties and they just hangout for the ride. They don't make any quick movements to get away or jump to escape. I think they like the interaction or at least tolerate it. Wait, I think it is like.:D

OK, is that a real word? LOL I know it is, of course, but you just taught me a term I never knew. GOD I love learning new stuff!! :)
Only problem is, there's no one around here smart enough to be impressed that I even know "crepuscular" now... Maybe I can screw with people and let them think I'm insulting them LMAO

How would you pronounce "crepuscular"? Are the "u"s long or short?

And I pronounced it right w/o checking first. I knew that pesky education would come in handy some day. ;)

New words can be quite fun, especially the biological ones. My favorite thing to call people is a "deuterostome". We are all deuterostomes. All vertebrates, chordates, even echinoderms (starfish, urchins, sea cukes, sand dollars) are deuterostomes. It means, during the embryological stage of our development, our buttholes develop before our mouths. TRUE STORY!

So, I guess that instead of saying "don't let your hummingbird as... overload your alligator mouth", I could just say, don't be such a deuterostomes? Somehow it just doesn't have the same ring to it. Anyway, about the diurnal thing. The behavior being described can be induced. Any diurnal animal, especially reptiles, that are being kept too warm, and aren't getting enough of a cool down at night, will do that. Temperature is not the only thing to consider. Many keepers overlook the daylight period. A.K.A. the day length. Always make the day length AND temperature appropriate for the time of year, or at least, the time of year you want them to think it is, taking into consideration the species, and latitude at which they are normally found in the wild. Even species that are normally diurnal will sometimes become active at night/dawn/dusk, and hide during the day, if it's the peak of summer.

Point remembered!
Here is an Oregon Garter (T. a. hydrophilus) feeding at around 10:30 at night!
This was on the Chetco River in So. Oregon; it was August; it was warm at night... That takes us past crepuscular and into night! He was hunting freshwater sculpin, by the way...

Being out so late at night, maybe he knows something that the local fishermen don't! (10:30 isn't THAT late, considering it's Aug)
Then again, the fishermen aren't after sculpin, now are they.
