Yuk...bunch of ugly worms you got there!
Good to hear Kink is feeding for you as well. I'm suprised Fawn didn't eat yet!
@ James ...and the rest offcourse; Kink is the result of a small accident at my place.
I wasn't paying attention and he got in between the side of one eclosure and a sliding door. The result is a kink in his spine....
Why is Sangria called Sangria?
He got it from a drunk guy? (S)he's an alcoholic? :D

Why is Sangria called Sangria?
The red on her head made me think of blood .... so I thought of the french for blood .... this didn't sound feminine enough  .... so she became a fruity red wine :D

Another feed and Kink an Sangria stuffed themselves again. Think our Fawn is still getting used to her surroundings. She's more interested in climbing all over me instead of food :D .... looks like I've got another cuddlebug :D

How are they doing? Has Fawn started feeding for you?
gregmonsta

She's still not eaten yet. Missed another feed last night. Do you know the British name of the fish you use? ... also, was she kept in a group or seperately?

I was worried this was going to happen.
Recently got an email of someone who bought parietalis on snakeday as well. They also stopped feeding.
She was housed in a group and was fed mostly on smelt and pollock.
Most of my own animals have stopped feeding as well (all of a sudden) and they only seem to be sniffing their food instead of actually feeding on it.
I tried worms the other day, and they went bezerk! It might be worth a try...

:D One worm chopped into three wriggly bits in a dish of salmon chunks did the job ;) ... two worm bits and two chunks of salmon were happily consumed by Fawn this evening ... All hail the mighty worm!!!!

sounds great, Greg
it's so cool when they become relaxed around you
on a funny note -
I got to this thread after reading two newbie-on-the-forum posts, and despite the fact that I've looked at the thread before, for a moment I thought you were introducing human newbies - wish I could adequately describe the mental image . . .

Congrats on the new additions.
Red-sideds are Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis. You'll find that they can be kept just like checkereds (although they come from Northern America and into Canada, whereas checkereds are found mostly in the Southern States).
 post some pictures up for us once they've settled in.

Phew...Thats all I can say right now....
 it must be seasonal considering the rest of the brood went off food too. But the worm trick definately worked. I'll use another live worm tomorrw (mixed in with salmon and pinky parts) and then I'll use defrosted worm parts for another 4/5 feeds using less and less until she gets the idea that 'normal' food isn't so bad after all ;).

Its most likely seasonal. But still! It always scares me when I rehome garters and they stop eating!
Your tactic is a good one by the way. Same as I do when they are newborns (although I haven't used this tactic in the last two years...they all went for fish on the first try)

Hi again, and thanx for the support :)
another question I want to ask is, can I put my checkered in with my red sided garters?
and weather this is a good idea?
I will post some pics as soon as I get chance
thanks in advance

 I would not mix them unless they are all male or female. You might end up with some unwanted hybrids.

Yea that is the only concern that I have cause I have the 2 pairs, so I am afraid of them chowing each other, not that they need to, they are fat! hehe I feed them alot of pinks but now putting them on fish, less fatning and will reduce imapction.
but thanx
I decided to keep them separate, I can't stand the though of losing one of them!
ConcinusMan

They won't chow on each other but yeah, you better check that weight. Make sure you're not overfeeding them on fatty foods. Heck, they could probably stand to fast for a month. It won't hurt them. I'd keep them seperate although the chance of them interbreeding is probably remote, especially if you don't brumate.
warbot
11-04-2009, 12:29 AM
I will keep that in mind
brumate?
And yea I got them separate, my newbies are not doing as well as I want them to be,
not eating properly, very skittish, especially the one!
what can I supply to them as food that I can leave in a bowl so that I do not startle them to much?

brumate?
The process of hibernation in snakes.

A good option would be to leave bite-sized pieces of fish/pinkies (or pinky parts) in a bowl and keep watch from a distance ;)

I don't know what substrate you're using, but that method sometimes results in swallowing of substrate. I always feed them in a manner that prevents that, and I always separate individual snakes as they tend to bite one another when the feeding response is initiated.
