Nerodia get such a bad rap. They really are sweet snakes and less high strung than a lot of garter snakes. Sure, if you catch one out in the wild, it is going to tear you a new one. But in captivity they are 100% opposite. They are so incredibly laid back and just a pleasure to keep. Not to mention, gorgeous.

Nerodia erythrogaster erythrogaster, red bellied water snake (juvenile)

Nerodia cyclopion , green water snake (the rare red phase, and an extremely awesome one at that)

Nerodia taxispilota, brown water snake. My personal favorite normal for their incredibly crisp and neat pattern.

Nerodia fasciata pictiventris, florida banded water snakes, these are my 8 holdbacks from my cherry x pale hypo clutch. Why 8? By holding back so many, of different color patterns and varieties I will be able to figure out in the future what a baby will look like as an adult, as well as continue selectively breeding for different looks. There is so much going on with this group and it will be cool to see how they mature!

Here are the males

Maybe some day. I had my eyes on N. taxispilota once, but it turned out that the owner of a few specimens wasn't interested in breeding them.

For now, I'll stick to Natrix, even if handling means a 95% chance of getting musked with something that makes Thamnophis musk smell like roses.

I've caught at least a dozen northern water snakes here in Ontario Canada not one bit me. ALL of them were very calm only problem was none of them would eat worms or mice :( I had to catch frogs which was too hard for me to do so I let them go 3 days later back where I got them. I would LOVE to buy a captive bred water snake they are amazing.

I've got 3 (2 hypo's and 1 normal). Love them. Shannon was right. they are like a big garter snake. Mine are babies but soon they will be big. They're eating guppies and salmon for me.

They are seriously awesome snakes. I am proud to say that my holdbacks are already pushing 7-8 inches in length and recognize pinkies as a prey item without any scenting. Actually, the vanishing pattern female prefers pinkies to anything else!! They are getting a rotated diet of pinkies one meal, tilapia strips the next!

I don't know about MA but I had no trouble finding them in MI, upstate NY, and CT when I was back east. In Upstate NY it was weird though - some ponds that seemed perfect for them, only eastern garters. Other ponds, tons of them.

Thats like here. My town used to be all wetlands and it basicly is still one big swamp with neighborhoods inbetween! There are lakes, ponds, streams, marsh, swamps, everything! Tons of garters..No water snakes.

Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta...as Irwin would say "Isn't she a beauty!" Southern Indiana wetlands. Well worth the drive :)

Yeah, I love nerodia and would love to get my hands on some CB non-native species.

I didn't even know if any Natrix were in the US or not...always have thought they were awesome though!

I can sure hook you up with some cb hypo Bandeds, some of which are probably "Super Hypo"(homozygous for co-dom hypomelanism) and normal cb Red-Bellies, as well as some nice-looking normal Banded babies. I'd love to get ahold of some adult Broad-Bandeds and Diamondbacks myself. These snakes are more enjoyable for me than my other Colubrids, since I've become horribly allergic to rodent dander, even on frozen mice and rats, and it's so convenient to simply pick up some Salmon or Tilapia at the supermarket when I go shopping, like buying food for the cat or dog! I've caught several adult Water Snakes of various species, and have never had one bite me. I recently picked up a huge male that is probably an intergrade between a Red-Belly and a Banded, from Charleston County. He did the head-flattening thing at first, then quickly settled down and now I can even carry him around like a baby in my arms, on his back. He's over four feet long and still has some visable dorsal pattern, plus a few random stripes trying to make their way across his belly(which is lighter than most Red-Bellies' bellies), but otherwise looks like a light-colored Red-Belly.

Here's a couple of pics of him; I named him "Big George" after George Foreman.

Here's a known F1 hybrid(50/50) of Nerodia erythrogaster x N. fasciata that belongs to the Edisto Island Serpentarium on Edisto Island, SC. I tried to get this snake, but Ted Clamp is too attached to it, lol.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v669/pitbulllady/Snake%20Photos/NerodiaMutt.jpg

Here's a nice one of "Mahogany", my female who was sold to me as a Banded, but who is probably also an intergrade, just more Banded than Red-Belly. She has very few belly stripes. She gave birth to four babies, a tiny litter by Water Snake proportions, early in September. One shows a lot of her coloration, two are pretty much ordinary-looking Banded babies, and one has turned almost jet-black, so it could be melanistic. She is still fairly small, though, so I guess this was her first litter.

Yes, I have normal Red-Bellied babies, out of my Charleston County locale pair; they are het for absolutely nothing, lol. My female dropped a litter of 13, which isn't a big litter, but they were HUGE babies, way bigger than my N. fasciata babies. They were born 08/31/09. All have eaten strips of Tilapia or Salmon from my fingers, though they do not have the feeding response of the Bandeds, which eat even when in shed. They still have their neonatal dorsal patterns.

Here's a pic I took earlier today of the males, both Bandeds and Red-Bellies, in a "hat box" container while I was cleaning out their enclosure. The darker ones with the more blotched/checkerboard patterns are the Red-Bellies and the red or orangish ones are the hypo Banded boys.

Depending on where you are in MA, I can lead you to a pile of water snakes (Nerodia sipedon) within three miles of rte 93...
