Last Saturday at about 10:00 AM I was walking in the woods along a path after being frustrated not seeing any snakes of any kind for a few years, then bang there must of been 20+ garter snakes just hanging around not really doing anything, this is mid August had this been March / April it would be because they emerged from hibernation. Might it of been a bunch of gravid females hanging out finding a good spot to have their babies? on another path I now see at least 5 newborn garters a day they are all over, needless to say I brough 2 adults from that 20+ or so I saw and I have 4 week old or so babies all eating worms :) I guess my question is to get to the point. Why was there so many garters together all at once? I've returned daily for hours and hours looking for more in that exact spot and found nothing. Seems it was a 1 shot deal.

Phil, not sure what the weather is like in Ottawa, but they could be starting to congregate near their brumation site in preparation for winter. Seems a bit early, but again, I have no idea what you're weather is like :) I'd definitely keep an eye on that spot :)

Gravid females have been reported as congregating in suitable areas to give birth. ;)

I have been every day for the past few weeks now that I found such a great spot for snakes one trail I always find babies and the other trail .5 kilometers away always has bigger ones there is a small boardwalk there where they were hiding and a small log no real crevice or any holes to go deep in ground for hibernating that I know of. In terms of the weather even though I am in Canada lately the last few weeks it's been 32 - 40 degrees or 89.6 to 104 F. Basically we been getting a steady taste of what it would be like in Arizona :)

Yikes! Those are our normal summer temps, but I didn't expect it for Canada. So, yeah, they're probably not looking to brumate just yet!
Must have been the expectant mother's lounge :D Cool...
