I just hand fed my baby Dekays. I found some small slugs and the Dekays still had trouble with them. I'll never look at a baby radix and say it's small after having baby Dekays. I have 15 baby, I hope all start eating, soon.

Steve,

Are your baby Dekayi only eating baby slugs or are you lucky enough to have them interested in something else?

That is all mine will eat.

They are just doing slugs at this time. Hoping to get them on worms soon.

new here maybe someone can help me. two questions, first this site is called garter snake forum, can you talk bout any snakes here? and second, i found this because you were talking about storenia dekayi and my son just caught one and we need info, can they eat meal worms? it has been eating slugs and earthworms but dont know if it can eat anything else. also does it need a heat rock like some reptiles do? any other care info would be greatly appreciated!

Our intention is to keep it focused on garter snakes, but we make exceptions regarding Nerodia and Storeria, because they're relatively close relatives of Thamnophis. Discussions regarding these two genera belong here, in The Garter Snake Lounge. Use existing threads if you can. If you want to show off a non-garter pet, we have a couple of threads for that purpose.

Earthworms, slugs and snails. Some form of heat gradient in the enclosure is recommended, since they need to thermoregulate, whether it's achieved using a heat rock, heat pad or heat lamp.

Do not use a heat rock they are dangerous to the snake use a lamp or pad it is much safer.

thankyou for the answers! now another question,

'Our intention is to keep it focused on garter snakes, but we make exceptions regarding Nerodia and Storeria, because they're relatively close relatives of Thamnophis.'

I assume thamnophis is the term for a garter snake, what is the common name of nerodia? what kind of snake is that? hope i'm not bothering anyone, but when i start learning about something i like to continue learning, and often answers to some questions give me more questions to ask.

by the way, the brown snake we caught is 12 1/4 inches, will he get much bigger?

Nerodia would be the ones that are usually called water snakes.

Apparently someone was referring to a very large Thamnophis radix.

Sexing works the same way as with garters and we do have quite a few threads about how to do that.

is that similar to the Northern Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis sauritus septentrionalis)? Looks similar and i almost stepped on one last month.
