I have been bugging my boyfriend for months to let me get a snake. He kept saying no we are not getting a snake. Well we got in a fight yesterday and I came home to find an aquarium set up in the corner of my room with a little teeny garter snake in it. I guess his friend's had babies and he found the tank in our garage so he decided to suck up lol.

I had always wanted a corn snake so I've been going crazy trying to figure out how to not kill the little guy. I'm about to go post in the appropriate section in the forum and pick people's brains to make sure i care for him ok.

Sorry this picture is so bad, I had him in a cooler while I was putting the finishing touches on his home and snapped this with my cell phone. In person he is a very pretty brown with yellow stripes, not black like he looks in the picture.

Oh and im saying he but i really have no idea lol.

Welcome, welcome! :D

The caresheet in the articles section (see tabs at the top of the page) is a great place to start learning about the care of garter snakes. Enjoy, they are great snakes to own.

From what i've read I've done most of everything right so far, except trying to feed him crickets). I don't have a heater yet but i guess his friend caught the snakes mom so its native to around here. I just turned off the A/C and did put a light that provides a little heat next to the tank until i can get to the store tonight to pick something up.

Welcome to the forum! There are many wonderful people here from around the world that can answer probably any question you might come up with about the care of your new friend. Garters are wonderfully interactive and curious. Since you have a baby, handling him/her should be easy. The babies eat small cut up earthworms. Later you may be able to convert to cut up pinkies and salmon and/or trout. As Steve from Iowa has always told me, for those reluctant & stubborn Non-Eaters, try the guppy card. His advice has never failed me.

Good luck withyour new baby. We hope to see many more pictures!;)
