the way they're making themselves at home, they may end up giving birth right in your sunroom, Terry
just give them a warm spot and some water . . .

Well folks, haven’t seen a snake in the sunroom for a week or so, except for a quick glimpse of a nose sticking out of a hole. Couldn’t even bait one out on the cool days,:( so guess they are “out” for the summer. Interesting year, not a lot of snakes but a lot going on. No milksnakes at all this spring, but that is good for the garters.:) Just hope I can find this year’s lady snake later this summer after she has shed, just love that green. So time to close up this thread till next spring. One last photo of my “handsome girl”. Thank you all for your kind comments, I sincerely appreciate them. See ya! :D

Whoa Terry, not so fast.
What are we suppose to do now. I don't want to go back to mundane life. I want to live licariously through your sunroom.:D This isn't fair. I must protest!

How about a compromise. Set up a webcam, you know the 24/7 kind. That way we can at least see the sunroom and imagine what could be coming in next.

B’gosh and Begorrah! It must be springtime, the birds are singin, my bees are bringing in pollen by the truckload, and my old Irish eyes beheld this little darlin this morning (looks kind of familiar).:) Luckily St. Patrick doesn’t hang around my place. Looking forward to another adventure in snake baiting. Never know who will show up. Have to drag out the lamp tomorrow.:D

Man! Snakes are hard to come by this year. Just one for sure, so far. I think that this might be the same one that I saw inside, got that same little spiderweb snoogie on his nose. He seems to be checking out the outsde world. Weather is going to get nasty later this weekend, so I may be able to get them interested in the lamp. Otherwise it might be a short "snake baiting season".:(

Well as you can probably tell from my lack of posts this spring, the snakes have been pretty scarce this year... This might be one of the reasons why. Caught him sneaking out for a bit of warmth this PM, looked really big and unfortunately well fed.

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/2020_milk.jpg

As you can see he was decidedly unhappy about being picked up! Too big to be hanging around the sunroom so decided to make a long distance relocation (one more bite and it could have been to somewhere other than this earthly world….LOL not really).

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/milk_bite.jpg

One more pix, you can see he did draw blood. Pretty sure I have not seen this one before, and No James it is not ladybug. Hope at least a few more garters show up before end of “baiting season”. See ya.

I must say those are beautiful, unwanted visitors!!!

They are indeed! I have been keeping a kind of informal set of id photos, mostly of the “shield” markings on the head. Only moved them a couple of hundred yards out to a brushpile in the swamp. We’ll see if any of them make it back to the sunroom.

I've been looking too! I don't understand why these snakes aren't on the market. Does anybody know why?

I'm trying to catch one so if anybody has any tips on how to find them, I'd be thrilled. :)

Are the recently posted photos from this year? Is it not too early to start looking for them?

They seem to hang out same place as garters, under rocks, around old stone foundations, rock walls etc. Same as garters, makes sense cus garters are on the menu:eek:. The pix were from last week so they should be out and about.

Now that takes some perseverance! Thanks to everyone for their kind words.

Well it is the 4th of May and the end of the official “snake baiting season”, so I guess I’ll close up shop for now. Little disappointed this year, not many garters, and I kind of hated to move my long time resident milk snake, but it is for the best. I’ll keep looking around the pool this summer, and if I find anything interesting I will post. Bye for now hope to see y’all next March.:D:D

It must be spring! One day late for St Patrick’s Day. Not unlike the swallows of Capistrano, or the buzzards of Hinckley, the garter snakes have returned to my sunroom. Just catching a few rays. Not doing anything interesting (aka sex:eek:) yet, but will keep you all posted if anything worthy of a few photos happens. Good to be back.:D

ConcinusMan
03-20-2011, 05:03 PM
Well it is kinda ridiculous. Sure, put some water and food right where the snakes are already hanging out, and they're probably going to take advantage of it, but with or without the "baiting" the snakes were already there. It's not like you're going to draw them in by placing food and water dishes out. They're not feral cats and dogs for cryin' out loud.

And Robert, I've seen people use bait fish on a fishing line to catch water snakes. It actually works.;)

2.i dont want to hurt a snake! there cheek muscles arent the same as those of a fish!

ConcinusMan

No snakes were harmed. They simply waited for the snake to bite the fish, and reeled them in before the hook could do any harm.;)

Yikes! In case anyone is interested where I came up with the name for this thread: It all started some years ago when I found a blue garter snake out near my woodpile, and wanted to find out more about it. Came across this forum, and found it pretty interesting. At the time I think there were around 200 members. So I introduced myself here http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/welcome-lounge/572-howdy.html And this thread started from post #18. Most everyone seems to enjoy reading it because it is kinda fun, and I look forward to reviving the thread every spring. Gotta go look for the lamp tomorrow morning LOL.:D

If you have been reading my posts here over the last few days you probably read that Cazador thought it was funny that I was baiting snakes with a heat lamp. Well that got me to thinking (always trouble) and since I apparently have no life, I thought why not? This morning was fairly cold and nothing was around. So I changed the bulb to 100w and set the light about 14 inches above the “snake hole” and waited to see what would happen. Came back about two hours later and this happened….. Pretty slick huh?

Well it is the middle of May, so the snakes are out for the summer. Pretty dismal baiting year, only a couple of snakes. Very few snakes around the pool too, maybe just a minimum in the population cycle. One interesting thing though. Even though I much prefer ending with photos of garters, did find this guy(?) out by the pool. First saw him 4 years ago, much smaller then. I relocated him away from the pool just to be safe, but somehow I have the feeling that he will be back LOL. Anyway I will keep my eyes opened for anything unusual that shows up this summer, and will see you in the spring.

So after a couple of years absence thought it was time to revive this old thread. Last year was pretty strange, never saw a snake. Was a little worried that it was going to be the same story this year. So when I went down to get some tools out of the sunspace, was delighted to see this gal sunning on the sill. A beauty, a solid olive green. Nice and healthy. Best part she was not alone, another was laying in the sliding door track and couple were outside doing there "Raiders of the Lost Ark" thing with the hole on the outside.

Couldn't help it, had to pick her up for a closeup. Going to be nice for the next couple of days so will keep an eye on things to see what's going on. Will post some pix if anything interesting. May even set up the light LOL. Good to be back!

There does seem to be some family resemblance here. This was taken 7 (how can it be that long?) ago.
