You could see if the NY dept. of fish & game has any kind of "native herp list" on their web site. Also I think somebody recently posted a link to a species gallery that's somewhere on this site, but I don't remember what thread it was, sorry! :o

I want to point out that some subspecies are missing from the lists. The species T. eques should have many more.

Well, according to the National Audubon Society there are 13 species and 40 subspecies of garter snake. I don't remember if that includes ribbon snakes which are part of Thamnophis.
I think that all states' fishing and boating commission websites have a list of the reptiles in their state that usually include pictures.
Oops, I forgot. There is also some sort of list of garter snakes on this site. I doubt whether it includes every species and subspecies but maybe it will help. Just click on the "articles" tab on the top of your screen, you'll see a list there.

Look around for local herp societies in your area (or even statewide groups). They may have web sites or forums where people post their field herping experiences, and might even organize trips to special areas of interest.

Oh, I meant you'd have to search for them online. Or if you have a local independent pet/reptile shop (i.e. not Petco) in your area, they might know about local groups. The mom thing I can't help with, though. ;)

You know, I was going to revise my post and forgot... I meant to say I didn't want to unfairly assume your local Petco/Petsmart/whatever would be staffed by the same nitwits mine is, and you could always ask there on the chance that they *do* have knowledgeable staff who might know about local herp societies.
But... It sounds like you might already know that's going to be a useless venture. Looks like you've got to go all the way to Rochester before you get to a herp-specific pet shop - maybe time to start doing the dishes without being asked, to butter Mom up... ;)
