Hey everyone... I'm Bailee.
Obviously I'm new, I'm coming from Michigan...
I've had Garter snakes before...
The one I just had, her name was Anzu.
Here is a picture:

We'd found her in the yard, and she had an injured face.
One of her eyes were gone, and it looked like she had scraped her face, so her mouth was always partially open.
We believed she was blind.
She rarely used her tongue.
I had her for... a few days, maybe three.
I kept her because she was pretty defenseless, I wanted to ensure her a longer life, but as you see, she did not live long.
I'm really upset, for I had grown quite attached to her.
She used to wrap around my fingers, and while in my lap, she would curl the tip of her tail around the tip of my finger.
I have absolutely no idea why she died... I don't know if it had to do with shedding her skin, because that was what she was doing right before she died.
She seemed active enough.. though she would frequently stop, and lie there.
For three days I was in fear she'd die any minute... She'd even lay on her back, but as soon as I would pick her up, she would be fine again.
And then the time I don't suspect she's dead... she is.
I'm not sure if she ate, we bought her crickets, for we couldn't find any earth worms.
I'm unsure if she starved though, because it was out of no where, sudden.

Well.. I'm done with my story. If you have any ideas of why she died.. please tell me.
I'm glad to be here, it's nice to meet you all.

That's a sad story, Bailee. I sounds as though the poor thing had some serious health issues, and there was nothing you could have done differently.
If you acquire another Garter Snake please feel free to ask for help and advice from the forum, especially on feeding.... Garters won't eat crickets.
Anyway, welcome to the forum.:)

Nice to have you on the forum. Thank you for the help you gave Anzu.
The injuries you described seem very severe. You did what you could, given the situation.
You saw something special in Anzu and that is the magic they have. I can relate to your story. I hope that you will have another Garter come into your life under a better situation for both of you. A good place to start before that happens is the care sheet which can be found on the forum homepage. Here's a link. http://www.thamnophis.com/caresheets/index.php?title=Garter_Snake_Care_Sheet
Once again, It's nice to have you with us.

Welcome to the forum, Bailee. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your baby. As Steve said, it sounds as if the injuries suffered were severe and I believe you found her to provide comfort for the last few days of her life.

I hope you will have a happier experience with another garter soon. They crawl into your heart. Check the care sheet and don't be afraid to ask anyone here any question you may have. We are all at different levels of understanding when it comes to these special snakes. Everyone here on the forum has been extremely helpful and forthcoming with advice when needed.

Hugs:)

Aw, poor little gal. At least she had someplace secure and comfortable for a little while.

I don't think anyone else mentioned this - you definitely didn't starve her! It's true garter snakes won't eat crickets, but it's also true that they can go weeks without eating, even in the summertime, so three days wouldn't have hurt. It sounds like she had some bad injuries, and they must've gotten the better of her.
