If you're implying that you think it might be a Garter, I'm not sure. It could be a Black Rat Snake, although I'm a bit tired now, and my vision might be fooling me, haha!

..so I decided to dig up this old post:

Well, it took a bit of searching, but I finally found a link I once posted on kingsnake.com:

Photos of garter snake engulfing adult vole. (http://www.redshift.com/%7Ebigcreek/fauna/garter%20snake/index.html)

edit: oh, right. You had already seen it. :D

A few years ago, on a hike somewhere in the CA coastal range (maybe it was Mt. Tam, maybe Muir Woods...) I saw a smallish snake just off the trail in the process of swallowing a banana slug. I didn't have a camera with me, and I really regret that because it was awfully cool. And because I've got no idea what kind of snake it was - dark, solid brownish, no markings that I can remember.

Sharp-tailed snake (Contia tenuis)?

Banana Slugs are about 100 times bigger than Sharp-tailed snakes ;) Not really, but they're huge compared to a sharp tailed. Rubber Boa? Sierra Garter? There are probably a dozen other possibilities that I'm not as familiar with.

on my other thread , my video thread, the snake in my 2 videos, before i caught her my neighbor said he was walking outside when he heard screaming and chirping and he went to go see what it was and he said he saw the snake up in a lilac bush with a baby robin in its mouth, and he said the mother was constantly fluttering around it and pecking her, but she ignored it and ate the baby anyways, and when i caught her she had a huuuge lump in her belly, and her poop had small featherlike fibers in it and what looked like a piece of beak....that would have been sweet to see

yea i would never feed a live bird purposfully to a snake, although i dont kno how else one could feed a bird to a snake, however if i received a dead one rom like a pet store i might try it but i like feeding my garters rodents instead...there isnt as much mess and it doesnt smell either, at least compared to feeding them on a diet of fish earthworms and leeches...now thats gooey, sticky, and smelly lol

Alright, now that I'm checking again, I see it's a Garter. As you said, it does look like it could be carrion.

check this out too.......DAMN BULLFROGS, what goes around comes around.....the reason why i say this is because in southern minnesota at my aunt's house, i once saw a few bullfrogs eating a new litter of baby snakes so...... http://www.gerardfuehrer.com/naturevisions/071000.jpg

That's nothing, Bullfrogs have been known to eat bats! Anything that fits in their mouth, can easily end up there.
