I received a call this afternoor from a guy who(through the grapevine) found out I was into Garter snakes. He said that he had a big snake in his shed and that he wanted it gone. He said he didn't want to kill it but that if it didn't leave he would. The kids and I had just finished some kayaking and were only a few miles from the guys house. I went to his shed thinking, ya, right a big snake. He had one of the small metal sheds with the sliding doors. I did expect to find a snake. I mean, what are the chances it would be in there during the day at the exact time I was there. I slide open the door and looked down. Here's what was waiting for me.
She's beautiful. She musked me and puked a bunch of worms.
I'm guessing she's gravid.

Here's another photo of this beautiful girl. She'll be staying here on the Ranch. I'm very interested in seeing her babies. I see that these brown phase radixes are even on the other side of town.
She has a great attitude and is already calming down.

Rhea,
I'm beginning to think you might be on to something. These guys have such acute sense of smell. I know that moments after taking a bucket of worms out of the frig. they are out looking for food. Once I transfered a couple hundred frozen pinkies from the basement to the upstairs. The pinkies were in ziplock bags and the transfer took about 15 sec. I walked into the radix nursery and most of the babies were out looking at me when I walked in. It wasn't a "hey, what's going on" look. It was a "Where's the food" look. I'm sure there acute sense for food also works well in identifing friend/mate or foe.
It would be cool to really know what they felt when they came into my house. Maybe "Home Sweet Home"

Tents? outside?
Greg, give me a break. We sleep with them.:D

Took this new girl out for a check-up, today. She looks great and feels very full. She has calmed down substantially. She got a bath and a few pinkies. Hand fed her while holding her. She must think she's in a Maternity Ward as calm as she is.
Nothings too good for one of my radixes. :)

As I type this girl is having babies. 5 so far. Took some video of the birth. Will see how it turned out and maybe post it on Youtube. Gabby is grabbing them as they come out and helping them break out of their egg sacks. She's a great snake girl. Gotta go.

Frankly, I prefer Butter Pecan or German Chocolate ice cream. I'm not real fond of Garter Snake flavor.

These were all rescue snakes. I had nothing to do with them getting pregnant.

I'm 50 years old and the first time I'm accused of getting something pregnant, it's a snake:D

I had 3 planned births here on the Ranch this year.

Received a phone call this morning at 06:30. "Get it or it dies" were the words I heard. I felt like a fire fighter answering a call. I made the 20 minute drive and saved this beauty. I think she's gravid. I'm a lucky and blessed man. She's a welcome addition to the Ranch.

All snakes have it pretty rough. Even venomous species can be removed without killing them. Keep up the good work. It's always a rewarding feeling to know you have saved a serpent from certain doom. And, if she is gravid , you have saved many lives! Let's call her Octo-Mom. :)

I just helped her finish a shed. She went into blue phase the day after she arrived here. Wow, nice radix. I'm hoping she's gravid. If not she'll be staying to breed with one of my red male radixes. Looks like I missed a little of the shed.
She's a beauty and to think she was going to be killed for just being a snake.

Here's another rescue snake. Big dark phase radix. This is one of my "Brown Bags", as I call them. When I came home from work one day I found a brown paper sack on the front steps. Someone at least had the kindness to bag her and not kill her. She's full of babies and due anytime now. I love these dark phase. The great thing is the number of light phases that they produce.

They just keep coming. 11 More little scrubs. Notice the one in the middle with the couple of bends. He's having trouble moving around. He'll need some extra attention. Sounds good to me.

As I type she's having her babies. Big babies. Trying to get ready for work, I'll post a photo later tonight.

These are the biggest radix babies I've ever seen. They are the size of 1 month old babies. They look like they just ate a meal.

My kids came home from a weekend with their Mother and Gabby brought me a little surprize. This beautiful dark phase female radix. Gabby located it at Grandma's house and they are not welcome their so she bought it home.
That Gabby is such a good girl. Now that's an orange stripe. Remindes me of the stripe of Tang(R.I.P.). I sat and held her for about 30 minutes. No biting or musking.
I also found an adult male in the backyard today while hunting slugs. I gave him a quick check over and released him back in the native grass area. I'll see him again next Spring. I hate Winter as the radixes will have to sleep.

I can't say I've ever seen an ugly one.

Check out this great looking little male radix my daughter Gabby found. This little guy was outside the big snake room basement window. I would have seen him if I had the blinds open. The poor little guy just wanted in where it's warm and there's food and shelter.
It has been in the lower 40's all day, cold and rainy. I gave him a good checkover tonight and he seems go-to-go, other than being a little under weight. He's a beautiful lite phase, green head male. They just keep coming.

I just spent about 30 minutes holding this new little male. I've never had a wild male radix act so calm and contolled with me. He had no problems being touched, held, bent and inspected. He is one of the calmest males I have. No biting, musking or bolting. I'm beginning to think coming inside was just want he had planned. Maybe he was checking out my ladies through the window.:D

I hope he writes a good review of the Ranch.
