My alarm went off this morning and I got up. It's dark in the basement but I immediately noticed movement on the bedroom floor. I dove and grabbed the radix as it headed under the dresser. I knew it wasn't a resident since my are all accounted for. I put my glasses on and found it to be a new visitor to the Ranch. After a check-up, bath and some breakfast she was on her way out the back door.
I wonder if that's what she was hoping for when she came into the house. Maybe these radixes have a plan to this behavior. You don't think they're purposely taking advantage of my pro-radix ways, do you?:D

A lovely visitor that's for sure ;) I'm sure it was your skills that called her out of the wild into your home!

I'm sure the smell of 4500 pinkies and a couple hundred night crawlers didn't have anything to do with it. The feed dishes and watering station around the outside of the house couldn't have been part of it.:D

I'm just a sucker for T. anything but my heart belongs to T.radix

Maybe the word is getting out among your local population. Have you noticed any teensy little signs near the basement doors or foundation that say anything like "free food and bath, enter here"??

I don't think there's any signs you can see but I bet there's a pheromone trail that lights up the ground.
I'm such a lucky man. I hope many of them find their way(home) to my house this fall. All are welcome.

When I look at those little faces, I melt. I'd never be able to charge them:D

I hope they give me a good rating with the BBB.:D

There kind of like little Hobo radixes that stop by for a handout. My mother told me to never turn anyone away hungry, I'm sure she meant radixes.

The funny thing is I released a few males into the backyard. These were males from the backyard this year. I thought a few less mouths to feed might make life easier on me. I felt so bad about doing it, I set pinkies out under the deck for them once a week. A few days after releasing them I did have one of them come up to me while I was on the deck. I reached down and picked him up. He was so calm and seemed content to be in my hands I took him back in the house. I can see how Father Flanagan(Boy's Town) got started. Maybe I should start Radix Town. Maybe they'll make a movie about it. Maybe a statue of me kneeling down and picking up a small radix child.:D I've got to go, I'm starting to cry. It's so beautiful.

Here we go again. This one was in the snake room in the basement. Musked me good and calmed immediately when I placed her in the hot tub(bathroom sink). Good looking female. Getting ready to make a Vet. run for Tang so I'll have to check her over and feed her when I get back.

If one of those nice blue garters comes into your home send him my way >>; the parents don't need to know! lol. I wish I could 'home herp' like you instead of this tiring field herping!

TheArtist (or should we call you Prince?), you should have been around my house a few months ago. I caught 18 sirtalis within a 4 week span, all of which I released in the wild. Not so many around here these days.

hey field herping is fun ...first day my friend was ahead of me looking at an axe and im looking at a rope with a pattern less than a foot away...it wasnt a rope and apparently when i couldnt see the head of the thing i said $hit and $hit is the magic word that makes your friend come back and this HUGE head stuck up out of the ground...when we figured out it wasnt venomous we went after it ...looked like a rat snake but it had a blue mouth and front fangs and tried to climb a limb...it WASNT a coach whip and it was somewhere between 3-5ft...and my friend walked right over it...it escaped into a burrow under the tree and we havent found it since.

Prince x) lol. (i don't get it lol)
I have no luck for field herping! Three days of looking in three different habitates in different weather and all I got to see was our huge supply of big a$$ wolf spiders and big a$$ black beetles! i'll start a beetle collection x) I should move to a more plentiful reptile area :D

*Update* on my lastest visitor. Since this morning she has consumed 5 pinkies and 3 night crawlers.
She decided to take a room for the night. Says she's traveling west to Calif.
Wants to be a movie star.

Can't say I remember terribly many movies that feature garter snakes. Maybe she could star in Anaconda 5: The Attack of the Giant Radixes or something.

we've been through this
Indiana Jones falls into a tub of garters?
did I get that right?
they were just extras though - no starring roles - and having some large human fall on you . . . well . . .
I'd say Hollywood is a bum deal for garter stars, and I've got visions of her living in ditches where the water isn't entirely wholesome
tell her she's better off staying in Iowa

I've been able to talk with her. It's a tragic story. Abandoned by her Mom and Dad. Left to fend for herself. Homeless. She told me she's been sleeping in allies and under garbage. She was crying as she told me she even ate some cat food that was on somebodies back deck. How embarrassing.
She seems to have a talent for working with young radixes, so I offered her a job here at the Ranch. She's depressed but I think with some counseling she'll be fine. She's a good radix and has a bright future.

As I walked out to the back patio door I could see someone trying to get in. Up on the glass as if it were in an aquarium. I opened the door and in the radix came. She will be kept for a night or 2 until she gets a check over and some food. Then back out the door. She beautiful.
