My dark female had her babies this morning at 4 am.over 30 babies I don't know ,3 dead and one not in good shape ...Few have some orange ,will see after few meals and one shed!! probably around 40 babies.
I think my other gravid female is about to giving birth because she don't stop turning around in the aquarium so I will take pictures later I dont want to disturb.

Hey! Are you going to be selling any of the babies? I may be interested in purchasing one if you are, I'm still gathering my research, but the more research I do, the more I want a Garter. I see you're not TOO far from me. Please let me know :)

HI, first time I hear from you!! YOU speak french?? FIrst Its illegal to sell garter snake in Quebec but I can GIve you one ,It don't matters me.I will see After few shed to have a better idea.TAke the time to think about it.

je suis capable de communiquer en francais :) :)
I didn't know it was illegal to sell Garter snakes in Quebec. You learn something new every day! It would make sense as to why I haven't located any breeders here though :s
I went searching for some Garter Snakes yesterday actually because my parents have ponds and I know they can be found near water. As big as the ponds were, I didn't see any Snakes, I used to find breeding balls there and everything, but I think because of the dogs, the snakes may have moved else where. How do they adapt from wild capture to captivity? I would prefer to have a captive bred snake I think because I can't get the idea that the snake once knew bigger and better things than his tank.

I think the dog scared the snakes, you should go without your dog:( Better chance for you .If there is frogs ,probably there is garter snake . IN your location there is probably more species !ONly garter snake is legal by the way,and you better take my captive bred than wild caught:) Especially if your first garter snake??
Be patient make and set an aquarium or vivarium .I give you news soon. After few meals in aughust should be OK.

The dogs don't come with me, but they're always around the ponds, so I think I'll have to go farther out to find some. There are hundreds, probably thousands of tadpoles in that pond, so I'm sure the snakes are there... Somewhere lol
Around here though I don't know if we have a lot of snake species, the only ones I ever see are garter snakes. Apparently we have the odd Copper Head snake to, which is venemous, but I have yet to come across one and according to a study by McGill university there aren't any "poisonous" snakes in Quebec... but because they used the word poisonous as opposed to venemous, it makes me wonder how much they really know lol.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing more about those babies and i'm anxious for August :)

For few DOllars I think its around 25$$ buy the guides of reptiles et Amphibiens de Quebec et des Maritimes by j-f desroches and David Rodrigue ,a recent book lots of illustration lot of infos. There is 5 to 6 snakes species + frogs +turtles lot of stuff near huntingdon .NO copperhead ,historical mention of Timber rattle snake but never found...

Heheh all mention are keep secret can't say a word its a kind of convention ...too much illegal species are caught and keep as pet.The only species you can affort to keep is the garter snake and In monteregie is a good spot for orange sirtalis!!!
anyway keep focusing on young garter snake!its better to begin with ...

Lol! I meant the book! I know we have a lot of red belly snakes here, I was googling later last night and my boyfriend saw a picture of one and he was like THATS the snake I saw in the back yard. He said it was pretty long.

One third of the litter have orange on a different shade. Before the first shed,That make me think that the half of babies will turn orange and few red!!
Few extra babies 3/4 of babies will return in wild:(:).Split the babies in two part and release where I found the mom and were I found the male. One site is on jeopardy the other one will stay, around 30 kilometer between each spot .Half and half chance
Few don't want to eat earth worms ,on that 3 orange!!!NOt good for selection.I have the choice!ONly keep good feeder.
I cant wait their first shed!!!

They are very very nice Charles!
I'd personally keep the bad eaters. They will give you a bit more trouble, but it just seems better to release the strongest ones back in nature. It will give them more chances of surviving (eventhough probably only 1 or 2 will make it to maturity)

THe bad feeders are the most red or orange,Or the one with a kink or malformation is usually the best looking snake.
