Here are a couple of my radixes. This is Brownie, she's C/B and lives with the rest of her siblings. She's the only one with this color.

This is Big Girl, daughter of the late great BigBig. She always comes out and greets me whether I'm feeding or not. She likes getting out and hanging around with me. She doesn't like my daughter Gabby and will bite at her if she touches her. The photos don't do her justice. On her sides she has this beautiful yellow/green color that glows. Brownie is her sister.

Steve,
Love your all your Radix's!!!
Why do you think she trys to bite your daughter? Do you think our snakes get to know and trust us vs. maybe one of our kids?
Love to hear everyone's thoughts on this subject...
Regards,
Jack

I'm not sure why this occurs. Gabby is my partner in the T.radix Ranch and spend a lot of time with them also. If I have my hand in the enclosure and I'm touching Big Girl and Gabby reaches in she'll spin around and bite at her. While I've been touching Big Girl I'll have Gabby touch the same spot and I'll take my hand away in the hopes she'll be fooled and not know it's Gabby. This never works.
Gabby has never mistreated any snakes and loves them more than I do. This reaction is very strange as Big Girl won't take being touched by Gabby. If I'm holding her she will let me pass her off to Gabby but gets very active and only calms down if I take her back or she gets put away.
Very strange indeed.

There's no doubt that they recognise our individual scent. But it's strange that they can prefer one person over another.... and they do appear to.

It's quite something ... I do know that they can shy away from some people for no apparent reason. I took Penelope to college last week to show the students ... some she would explore straight away and others would be refused and she would pull back to me.

I've got a few radixes here, maybe I smell like one. I can't imagine that, since I shower a couple times a month whether I need it or not and that's not counting getting rained on while catching worms.:D

My snakes are rarely handled by anyone but me. I touch them all the time... even the meanest of my snakes calm down very quickly when being handled by me. But with most of them, if I pass one of them off to my brother, mom, or dad, or boyfriend... they will often become rather anxious and a boa even bit my mom once! Once i had Ra the king rat out in the yard and my brother was helping me manuever him. Upon getting a good whiff of my brother Ra was not having any part of him. My brother got hissed at, tail whipped, and struck at! I think it is a combination of possibly they are not as entirely comfortable and relaxed when handling them, and their strange scent may throw the snakes off a bit. They have been handled enough by me to know that I am not going to harm them. When I handle a snake, I just naturally know which areas of the body to support/touch and can quickly adjust that as the snake moves... and that takes expierience and time to learn how to do. I can see how maybe the awkwardness of being handled gently, but still in a manner the snake is not used to, combined with a strange scent, would make some of them rather uneasy.

Swing on down to the T.radixes Ranch sometime. I'll put you in the ring with our girl Speckle. She'll hit you with some authority.
I'm thinking about training her. I'll take her out on patrol with me.
If someone runs I'll yell "stop or I'll turn my radix loose":D
If I had a choice between A tazer or Speckle.......... I'll take the tazer:eek:
I got tazed once and liked it. They won't let me volunteer anymore at the trainings. They say I like it too much.

I have to ask. What do you do while fishing with your dad that would make him "stick" you.
Remember, you don't have to answer any questions that might incriminate you.:D

Was in doing the morning clean-up, had forgotten I had pinky scent on my hands. These guys were not happy and after looking at the photo it's clear to me I'll be paying for not having some food with me. Look at those angry little faces. This is a really good group. These are spot's babies from 2 years ago. I love the white dorsal stripe on these big girls. The females average 150g each.

Here's a little update to My daughter Gabby's trouble with my Big Girl.
The other night I looked into the big enclosure where Big Girl lives. I saw the back 3/4 of her but not the rest. She had that area in the wood pile. I wanted to try something so I yelled for Gabby.
I opened the enclosure and reached in and started rubbing Big Girl's back. She never moved. I then told Gabby to reach in and rub the same area I was. I pulled my hands out as Gabby touched her. Big Girl's reaction was immediate. She pulled herself out from the log and chased Gabby's hand away. The snake couldn't see either of us. Apparently she new my touch and was fine with it but then recognize someone else touching her and reacted. She seems to like me. I love this girl as I've watched her grown from a newborn to the large adult radix that she is. Her black coloring and that white dorsal are awesome. She will be allowed to breed next spring. I've got just the guy for her. She will be spending some Spring time with my dark dark male Midnite. Together they will have awesome babies.
Of course, I think all snake babies are awesome.

Steve,
Here's just a thought or stretch...
I know animals can react to scent and recognize each person by scent & touch. They also have been known to identify people with ailments. Does Gabby have an ongoing ailment, illness, allergies, etc that the snake may pick up on? May not have to be serious or severe but perhaps that is why our Snakes will take to some people upon meeting and not others; as Greg had mentioned at the college. Just another avenue to explore and I think could prove to be a rather interesting one at that.
Anybody need a thesis idea?:D
