Today was a good day at hamburg. Just a few new additions to the family!!! I have to post these pics really quick and then I have to scat!! These are straight off the camera except for having been cropped!!
I think this male concinnus is just stunning, he's so different! Some may call him ugly, I call his GORGEOUS!!! And a fantastic addition to the high black project!

I grabbed this 2 year old axanthic plains today for $75!! I think that's a good deal! She looks exactly like a puget!!! But a radix! She's SO blue, I had no idea they were this blue!!

And here's a snake I have long wanted to own, introducing Crinkles, my elephant trunk snake. This is a fully aquatic species of snake that easily reaches 5 feet in length and feeds on fish. You keep them in an aquarium, with lots of vegetation and hideys, just like a land snake except under water!!! Let hope crinkles settles into the family nicely! he was the biggest fattest baby!

and before I go here is my nebraska albino radix (I did not buy her today just took a pic for fun) She's developing the nicest red coloration!

Awesome!! The Elephant trunk snakes have always interested me but I don't have the time nor money to deal with such a specialized snake. I hope he does well for you, and I hope to hear more about him in the future.

I wish you luck with that one. ;) Personally, I would stay far away from them.

Very nice new additions. Did you happen to see any redstripe ribbons?

most people would! But most people are also not as willing to give a hard to keep species a shot like I am! I am wishing myself luck too Stefan!!! These are no cakewalk to keep, that is for sure! I have always loved snake keeping, and fish keeping, so, why not a snake you keep like a fish?!

congrats on your new additions, Shannon
I like the ugly concinnus - something cool about that snake
good luck with that elephant trunk snake
I found a video of one eating goldfish and it seemed like it was taking an inordinate amount of trouble over that fish - much less efficient than my garters, but definitely more dramatic YouTube - Squamata Reptiles presents: Elephant's Trunk Snake Attack! I did see that video! My guy won't be getting any goldfish for sure :D
but yes, they do seem awfully dramatic, but then again that's probably because if he lets up his grip for even a second the fish can just swim freely away!

And how is it that you can tell the difference between axanthic plains and Puget??? I have a small WC Puget I got in March and it looks like yours?

easy......pattern is one way, plus it was probably acquired from a breeder.. look at the side stripe, on scale rows 3 and 4, only garters with side stripes there are radix

So, Don, would you guess for my area Whidby Island, Washington there would be only T. ordinoides, T. sirtalis fitchi or T. sirtalis pickeringii?

Trust me when I say, that the difference between this snake and a puget sound garter is unmistakeable. Pugets are dainty, they have no pattern except for the blue checks between their skin, they are SHINY black and their stripes look very different. Radixes have a chunky build, a large clunky looking head, different shaped eyes, a wide, thicker dorsal stripe and checkered patterning in between the stripes, even on this axanthic specimen. In that picture, it may be harder to tell to the untrained eye because it's more of the belly of the snake. From above, the difference between this snake and a pickeringii is black and white.

Now this pic is very helpful TY.
There can be a real big difference between the two. The dark blue underside is ... always there?
I'm seeing allot of the fitchi with this blue trait.

My male puget has a light blue underside, and the female is darker overall, including the underside.

At what point do you stop counting the scale rows?
aSnakeLovinBabe
06-21-2009, 02:41 PM
at the belly scales... they stick up the sides just a little, and you simply don't count those ones.
