I thought I would post a few photos of Midnite. He is the darkest radix I have ever seen. His black is so different than anything I have ever had before. He stands out in the male enclosure he lives in. I have other dark morph radixes but this guy's black is something to see. No green or olive or brown or anything but black. My dream caught dark female will be his mate. Hope you enjoy. :)

WOW, he's a very striking individual. A selective breeding project could really make a nice line of snakes outta that one!!! If you could find the right female... and selectively breed for both the black, and a high contrasting BRIGHT clean stripe... that would be BOMB!!!!

There is something about high contrast and clean, well defined stripes that make a very stunning garter. He is a great looking garter. Hope he and his girl give you lots of nice babies. I, too, would like a picture of the whole snake.

So let it be written. so let it be done. Give me a day or two.

I love the two dots on his head, and the contrast between the dark and orange stripe is awesome! No wonder you call him Midnite! :)

Thank you to everyone for your comments. To be honest I wasn't sure what the response would be. I'm hoping the babies produced will be special.

Hypermel is an actual color morph and tend to have exxagerrated areas of melanin that is not really in a controlled space, its kind of all splotchy and inky looking... so a more fitting term would be like... "Midnight Phase Radixes"???? :D

Steve, I think I can speak for alot of the folks on here about the response- with the love you have for them, I don't think you would move forward on a half-a$$ endeavor. These will be awesome.

I just noticed Samantha's dots today and they're very small almost between her scales. They're not as prominent as Midnite's dots.

I just added an album to my gallery for anyone wanting to take a look at this guy. The full body shots aren't very good because the subject matter had an attitude. It's not his fault. He hasn't had a lot of out time and is still settling in. There will be more to come.

Something tells me if this breeding project works, I won't have any problems finding homes for the offspring. :D

Steve,
I think is a very worthy project worth persueing, but I wouldn't expect that it will be an inheritable trait in terms of being a simple recessive or simple one site "on/off" type gene. However it may be limited polygenetic in which you could get dramatic results in just a few generations of selective breeding. Worst case senario you pick out the darkest offspring and breed them to produce higher percentage of offspring with the desired midnite look to them, keep in mind that at some point inbreeding or line breeding may present some issues. While I said in my first sentence not to expect this to be a simple trait, it may in fact be just that, nobody really knows untill you do the breeding trials, thats why its fun to try right?
Best of luck with this breeding project,
Jeff
