I found this guy at a pond I go to. It had a wierd growth or part of an old injury I am not sure but here are a couple of pics. I apologize for the poor angles but the wind was gusting over 40mph. The first shot is a full body shot and the second is the area in question.

What do you think happened?

my Sammy has a smaller version of this at one end of her surgery scar - I go with Don's guess

Do snakes get warts?

I agree with Dons' guess, it's a flap of skin left loose after an old injury.

If I had to give it a name I would call it a snake skin tag(acrochordons).
Much like the skin tags people get, only this ones covered in scales.

Ok, so people think this one is a skin flap/tag. But I was serious - do snakes get warts, or is that strictly a mammalian issue? Does anyone know?

warts are caused by a virus, as far as I know I have only seen them on humans and dogs. snakes don't get them.

Thanks, I was wondering if there was a snake wart virus, apparently not. Do snakes get other viruses?

I don't know if snakes can get warts but if they could I don't think it would be covered with scales. Warts push the normal skin out of the way and form a crown. This thing looks like the end of a tail. Very strange.
It's almost as if it's a birth defect, an extra tail. I would love to see an x-ray to see if there were tail bones in it. See if you can get a Vet. to give you a free x-ray. If it's a Herp. Vet. they might do it just to findout. Keep us posted.

That's definitely a scar!!! My normal male banded water snake had this same thing right along side his massive scar that literally looked like something had taken a BIG chunk out of him a long time ago. It's like a flap of skin that has long since healed over, but never reattached to the body.
