most moths have that fur....lower set of wings on a lot of them that sit like that are different colors....bright oranges, reds, and pinks. upper set for camouflage, lower with bright colors to scare off predators.

A few days ago it was nice and warm, so I took my mom on a nature hike. She was pretty cool about me dragging her through the underbrush looking for snakes, and she's even forgiven me for letting go of a wild rose branch while trailblazing, and whapping her in the head with it! We put about 7km on our running shoes that day.
We saw some ducks in the creek:
http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/November10-2008_001.jpg
Also saw several garters, but this boy is the only one I could get hold of. He was very cooperative for pictures. I didn't keep him.

And while I'm at it, here's one of my tiny feathered friends from back in September. This is the only picture he stayed still long enough to get!

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn...
ARE THOSE PARROTS???? You've got wild parrots in NY? How???
drache
11-15-2008, 08:07 AM
they've been around since the late sixties, when apparently some escaped from a pet shipment
the quaker parrots build nests and do fine here over the winter
some areas of Brooklyn have large flocks of them, and I am on the border of one of those areas
there are also a couple of other parrot species loose in Brooklyn, but the quakers are very successful

@Stefan: 2 snakes ( of which 1 is more like a worm ;) )
But we have only seen 2 snakes in the wild. Which one could this is a bit disappointing when you look at it, but I really didn't find it disappointing because there were do many other nices things we saw.
We did see more snakes in captivity, but that's like looking at them in terraria so I don't post those pictures ;)

This is a photo of a dead possum:(. Or is it:confused:?? Chloe (my dog) and I went for a walk today and she found this. It is actually a very much alive possum playing dead (Virginia Opossum, Didelphis virginiana).
http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/dead_possum.jpg
Here is another shot, note the ears and tail. These are tropical amimals that have migrated north and not yet evolved hair on ears and tails, so in a nasty winter like this one they will very often lose the tips of the ears and tail to frostbite. No big deal they are survivors.

oh my Terry,
i can't believe you picked it up!
It wasn’t as bad as it looks:eek:. He was completely comatose. I think when Chloe found him he shifted into “dead possum” mode. You had to look very close to see any sign of life. Gave me time to go get the camera. Rabies is extremely rare in possums (maybe due to low body temp) so I wasn't too worried about picking him up.

As I understand it, they originated in South America and have over thousands of years migrated northward into the southern US, and over the last several hundred years have made it into the northern U.S. Yes they are the only North American marsupial. That cute little belly on Percival might just be a pouch.

Awesome Possum Terry! Lori, Percival is adorable. A few years back I made the mistake of sticking my hand in a pet taxi at night thinking my cat would be in there. Then, finding something furry inside I didnt think anything of it at first until i realized that the fur didnt belong to my cat. So i looked in with a flashlight and it was an opossum with a bunch of babies. I was always fascinated (and grateful) that it didnt bite me.

The Isthmus of Panama only formed about 3 million years ago, so it's definitely not an especially long time since they or their ancestors wandered over.
just this time humans are probably not to blame for once
last night a young raccoon was trying to come in through our bedroom window and I had to do some serious hissing and growling

It has happened a lot of times before and nothing we have done so far can even be compared to something of this magnitude.

not sure about that Stefan
it looks to me that humans have done a job of great magnitude on some parts of the earth - some of it can easily compared to small comets hitting and massive species migrations
one well-placed non-native species can wipe out an entire ecosystem - not to mention the soup of chemicals in the water supply
I don't know the number of animals that have gone extinct primarily due to human activity, but I remember it being staggering, and we seem to be able to do all that with hardly any big bangs - just quietly destroying away

If one well-placed non-native species can do that, imagine it happening with tens of thousands of species expanding into each others' areas at practically the same time (in geological terms). No cane toads, rabbits, dogs, cats, pigs or any other animal we've introduced can possibly have had a comparable impact to the one resulting from the South American flora and fauna rushing into North America and vice versa.

that is very true in terms of scale, but in terms of the time frame - that took a long time

that is very true in terms of scale, but in terms of the time frame - that took a long time
The time frame for each individual species would have been pretty much the same as when we introduce a species. It always starts with just a few individuals. For example, our white-tailed deer population, which is common in the southern half of this country, originates from 5 or 6 or escapees. Had it been a snake crossing over into South America, a single gravid female would have been as effective.

yeah - I had thought of that as well
but then I thought of a few examples that simply would not seem possible without human intervention, and it may just be my admittedly biased mind, but they seem to have been much more rapidly devastating than the somewhat more gradual spread
I'm a bit tired this morning, so much of this rises from a fogged mind, but I was thinking of rabbits someplace, some kind of mussel in another, kudzu, garlic, and raccoons, but so sorry - I'm not up for getting the details right now
and frankly, none of them seem quite as catastrophic to me than what I expect out of this mess of residues of drugs, hormones, and other chemicals ending up in the ground water even, and probably affecting most life forms - though not as instantly recognizable as the impact of a radioactive event or a large meteor impact
none of it may be catastrophic in and of itself, but when you piece it all together - well I think it's pretty impressive
oops - this was a bit further than I had meant to venture into this
to repeat - I do not lay claim to complete rational objectivity on that subject - I am clearly strongly biased against humans

Did somebody say raccoon? I found this guy at a lake that i often go to to go birdwatching...yep, thats just how big of a nerd I am. Anyway, he was out in the middle of the day, which is always a bit strange. He appeared healthy but I didnt get too close....I did give him a granola bar to get some extra shots. He looked pretty young, but anyway...

We used to have one as a pet. They are extremely intelligent animals.
And they like to wash their food before they eat, Watching him swish his food around in the water bowl just before eating it was funny.
Now it is required to have a special license for them, with the rabies epidemic, that's a good thing.

Raccoons crack me up:) My wife and I were staying in a cabin in Arkansas one time when at night we heard something on the deck. Turned out to be seven very fat and happy raccoons rummaging through our trash can outside. Soooo of course the next night I had to leave them scraps from dinner outside. They're so much fun to watch. One came right up to the window and peered in at us:)

Today was a cold, wet, miserable day so we all got into the van and took a drive around town. As we drove a large black bird hopped across the road, I just new it was a raven. Not common in our area I was surprised to see the three of them, then our hearts dropped when we noticed this guys left wing hanging lame. After calling the SPCA and circling the block acouple of times I decided I'd try to catch him. He made his way to a small fenced in playground where I easily cornered and captured him.

Just got back from the SPCA...They said he had to be put down...I'm kind of pissed because they said it was because the wing had a complete fracture, so why not amputate it!?I have lots of experiance and understanding with birds and could have more than cared for him! They tried to act like there was no other action they could have taken!!!If this were to ever happen again I would take it to a vet and say stick it to our 'native wildlife' laws!!:(JUST BS!!!!
