yes...and yes!

Nereis virens
In holland, you have to dig your @ss off to find some of these. But in springtime, these sandworms tend to go swimming in search of a mate. We litterally found hundreds of these bastards! And defenitly not the smallest ones I've seen!

Thanks for the id on her. I see them on occasion, but this was by far the biggest. She had been living in an old torn horse blanket that I'd had thrown over the fence-- had never gotten around to tossing it out, it's been there for months. Today when I pulled it down and shook it out, she came out. Must have been a great place for her to live and eat! So I disturbed her home but I'm sure she'll find somewhere else to live.

Shanley, seriously, I had the most abject fear of spiders. I used to just get cold and FREAKED inside when I saw them. But having Tati has really changed my perspective for some reason.

No, I'm not saying never. I was just kidding. But it does seem that since I've had children, the time to just read and suck up information has dwindled.
And now my brain is so full of "stuff to do" that anything I do seem to read about gets forgotten just as quickly.
Although I must admit, I've been doing a lot more Google-ing since belonging to this forum. It seems to have re-ignited my interest for knowledge.

So are you going to give us the answer soon or what?:D:D

We saw two of the cuuuuutest baby raccoons playing today but I didn't have my camera with me-- we were at a friend's house. They were racing around and up and down a tree. And they keep peeking around at us, giving it some thought, then shooting off again. Too cute!!!!

Lori P
05-21-2008, 07:25 PM
These are for Shanley-- here is a young fawn that came to meet one of the pygmy momma's and her babies-- I have no idea where momma deer was!! The fawn raced back into the woods soon after.

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/fawn_meeting_kid.JPG

And here was baby Rio-- we had just rescued a very pregnant pug, Maggie, who adopted Rio into her family as well!! She would clean her and snuggle her, and get upset when she'd jump out of the box!

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/Maggie_Rio_and_pups_2.JPG

And several months later (I can't believe I'm showing you all this!!!!) Rio had really claimed the whole house for her own....

goats are very smelly, especially boy goats in spring

Lori P

Rhea, for shame! LOL Goats, well tended and given plenty of pasture most certainly are not smelly. Except, agreed, for bucks in rut. There's an odor you'll never forget. But my does have no bad odor-- their natural scent is not even as noticable as a horse's natural scent. They are remarkable clean, constantly grooming themselves against trees and fences, and my goats positively shine. Rio, having been raised in the house all winter, had almost no scent at all.

People think goats are smelly and dirty beacuse they think of that old billy grampa had chained up behind the barn-- poorly nourished, living in his little dirt circle, no doubt lice infested and wormy. Any animal who is poorly sustained will have an offensive odor-- you should smell some of the rescue horses when they first come in.

And Reed, well, goats aren't really totally potty trainable-- Rio wore a diaper when she was little (with a little hole cut out for her tail, too cute!!) but as she got older, she just started walking out the doggy door on her own... and by the time she had outgrown the doggy door, we pretty much had her moved outside. She really did remarkably well!!

okay
I take that back
the horse stable where I used to work had a couple of boys as mascots and since this stable had no pasture at all, the goats were in the stables with the horses and when they were in rut, the smell had nowhere to go
I have been to places where they had goats and I didn't smell them, but I guess the memory of the smell is strong
to this I have to add that while I can identify strong animal smells and warn other people, I myself don't find them anywhere near as offensive as humans whose perfume blankets their surroundings

Since the parents where nearby, and we really cant find the same caterpillars as their parents...we've put it back.
Its a hard decision (spelling? ) Because you know it will probably be eaten. But on the other hand, we would probably starve it to death.
We've raised blackbirds, pigeons and a crow succesfully, but its just not possible to find the exact kind of food she prefers

Shanley, baby birds need a special digestive enzyme from their mommas in order to digest their food up to a certain age. (They get the enzyme when momma regurges into their mouths) So, you can feed them all they'll eat but without the enzyme they cannot process the food and it quickly ferments in their crop.

aww thats such a cute bird, i was biking out of my driveway onetime and i looked to the side and saw two giant eyes and i jumped off my bike because i didnt know what it was and it scared me, turned out it was a baby owl, i warmed her up and took her to the nearest rescue animal shelter, they fed her gatorade and put her on a heating pad, by morning she was fine, i visited her many times before she was released

That's interesting, I never knew that. Even with my vet tech training I don't remember ever hearing about that enzyme...cool, learn something new everyday!

So that's all I managed to photograph this weekend. No frogs, no lizards, no snakes, no insects or spiders. I blame the weather. It has been sunny and fairly warm in the sun, but overall it's been pretty cold due to the wind. And it's too damn dry.

It's been pretty cold here too. I haven't been out to look for any nature lately........we still have frost warnings in the forecast for the coming week!
I've usually got the pool up and running by this time of year. What happened to the global warming???

What happened to the global warming???
Oh, it's coming, don't you worry. ;)

According to one theory, it's supposed to get colder here at first, as the Gulf Stream and subsequently the North Atlantic Current slow down and stop transporting warm water masses this way.

Stefan-A

I think there are just a handful of snake species in the world that could swallow that one. They can grow to about 3-5 times the weight of an ordinary rabbit*. :)

And I sure as hell wouldn't feed it to anything. As you said, it is indeed a lovely steak.

Here's a few more. I had a ton of pictures in the camera, and I've just managed to find time to download them all into the computer, so you'll see them popping up in threads all over for a couple days!

both of those rattle snakes are really pretty

The baby rattler was inches from our legs (on some exposed gnarled roots) before we noticed it. This was rattler #3 of 2007 which we almost discovered the wrong way. Their camouflage and their often "I am not moving... nor rattling" behavior offers perfect snakebite possibilities. Great! Especially when you are 14 miles from the trailhead with no phone capabilities.

It's like you're looking for these guys, because it's a herp backpacking trip.... but you don't want to find them by sensing a couple pinpricks in the back of your calves either!

Steve

P.S. Hope to find more this year. Hee! hee! (never learns)

Humans have "tagged" them as Canadian, evidently the birds must not agree.

They do now. It's the old story of people importing and intentionally releasing foreign species into the wild. The population is well established these days.

count dewclaw
06-20-2008, 01:53 PM
Ah, I see now! So you have Canada Geese and we have European Starlings....I think you may have gotten the better deal! :D:D Maybe....

Stefan-A
06-20-2008, 02:12 PM
Possibly, I don't really know how much competition there is between these geese and our original species.

Then again, we also got the white-tailed deer, the Canadian beaver, the muskrat and the American mink. The first three haven't had any significant adverse effects on the ecosystem, but the mink is doing serious damage.

Funny thing about this country, it was under ice up until about 10 000 years ago and partially under water until a few thousand years ago. New species are constantly moving in.
