I think it's Araneus cucurbitinus, but one or two things look a bit wrong....can I have a side view, to confirm?

reptileparadise
09-28-2007, 01:22 PM
I googled the name...Araneus cucurbitinus But it doesnt look like thats is the one..Or it should shed a few more times...The 'mouth' looks a bit different and the legs dont really match...
one minute...I'll see if she? is still there

adamanteus
09-28-2007, 01:25 PM
In some ways it looks like one of the Dictyna...but I can't find a match. Also the eye grouping is very much Araneus. How about a pic of the web?

adamanteus
09-28-2007, 01:30 PM
Can anyone be bothered Googling 'Dictynidae' and searching the list for a match? (Stefan:rolleyes:)....I think that's where you'll find your answer. It's not a spider I've ever seen.

Here's a starting point for all you 'Googlers'!!List of Dictynidae species - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dictynidae_species)

Dictynidae, James? ;)

edit: Nigma walckenaeri? Or a close relative?

adamanteus

It's possible, I don't know this one. A web pic will confirm Dictynidae though.

Stefan...you were spot on! I resign my crown graciously!:o At least I got the Dictynidae part right!:D
Yeah, but you had a typo in Dictynidae, so that doesn't count. ;) :D

But I wouldn't have known where to look if you hadn't suggested that, I wouldn't have gotten it right if google hadn't offered to correct your spelling and I definitely wouldn't have figured out Nigma, if some Czech website (coincidentally, the same website Sjoerd linked to) hadn't had a picture of that species. :D

adamanteus
09-28-2007, 01:48 PM
I must learn to Google! It takes me all day....did you see the length of the list in the link I posted? Where do you start?

reptileparadise
09-28-2007, 01:52 PM
Google is easy!
Type what you want to know, like your talking to a small child...Make things as complete, but as simple as possible...

edit...I hadnt even seen the link you posted ...oops...

adamanteus
09-28-2007, 02:10 PM
Maybe, instead of typing Dictynidae, I should have typed in 'green spiders!!!

And a really useful feature is google's ability to search for specific phrases. Use plenty of keywords to narrow down the search and use - in front of a word to exclude it from the search.

Here's a real example of how to search for an unknown snake species ;) :D:

"nosed snake" -snakeskin scales -Rhinocheilus -hog -shovel -patch -shield -heterodon -leaf -hook

Who wants to guess what I was looking for? ;)

Sjoerd, in the UK we call this a House Spider Tegenaria domestica.

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//538/medium/Tegenaria_domestica.jpg

The spider in your picture looks more like Amourobius similis (or maybe A. fenestralis). Maybe that's what you call a House Spider in the Netherlands?

Stefan-A

Nice shots, Tori. :)

A tripod really makes a difference. I have two, one proper that I originally bought for my spotting scope and a cheap mini tripod that really comes in handy when taking macro shots. If I had a proper camera I'd probably use the other one a lot more, now it's only useful indoors, especially when I'm taking pictures of my snakes. :)

Thanks guys. I always look at this thread and I've thought about posting before, but everyone else's photo always look so much better than mine ever turn out. These are the only ones I'm not ashamed of. I have one of an old barn where I go snake hunting, but there is only the barn and the trees around it, so I didn't post that one.

reptileparadise
11-03-2007, 02:11 PM
Could you post that photo please? And maybe you could tell which snakes you've found there? ALways interesting to see 'habitat' pictures!

Tori
11-03-2007, 02:47 PM
Ok, I've found Black rat snakes, Fox snakes, and Ribbon snakes here. Too far from water for garters, I find them down below in the wetlands. Never found a hognosed snake around the barn either, the ground isn't sandy enough and they like to burrow in sand during the day and wait for frogs and toads.

I found two that I took in North Dakota when I lived there for 2 years. I was going through some old cd's that I had backed up my computer on to see what all was there. The one of the ducks was actually taken in MN while I was visiting a friend. I can't find the ones I took of the geese, there were thousands! But I'll keep looking.

As long as my photos can't be compared to a professional photographer's, I don't consider myself good. :) The fact that I don't use the same equipment, doesn't make my pictures good either.

Besides, I use image processing tools to improve many of my pictures. I bet most people here don't.

Actually, I suppose if I saw them on a regular basis they wouldn't creep me out so much.

They are AWESOME pics, Laura. You have such a variety of critters in Texas. I want an armadillo, lol.

And I especially like the patchnose.

Thanks :)

I really don't see the tarantulas all that often, unfortunately. There used to be more out here, but there's been a lot of development in my subdivision in the past few years. I used to have tons of scorpions that would get in the house - one stung me good when it was hiding on the underside of the tongue of my shoe... got me on the top of the foot about 5 times before I got free >:| I used to be terrified of both, now I keep a few tarantulas and scorpions as pets, lol.

I think the patchnose was probably hunting baby Mediterranean geckos when my cat violently interrupted it, lol. It was right after I got my baby ball python, and my cat, Idgie, brought the patchnose to me while I was working at my desk, dropped it at my feet and bellowed. I think she recognized it as one of those slithery things I was playing with the night before, lol.

My neighbor's seen a coral snake and a skink this year, and called me over to see the coral, so I grabbed my camera and ran, but it was already gone :( She didn't tell me about the skink because she figured I'd try to catch it and keep it, lol.

I didn't see many striped fence lizards this year, but hopefully I can get some pics of those in the Spring. They're adorable :)

I'm not sure I like your neighbor. :D If she figured you'd try to catch the skink and didn't call you over because of that, then why did she call you over when she saw a fairly venomous Elapid? ;)

That reminds me of something.... Anyone ever tried the so-called "Rattlesnake Gloves"? They're supple and light-weight but can reputedly stop a rattler bite. I forget what kind of skin they're made from, it might be Triceratops!:D

Not shamrocks. This is common wood sorrel (Oxalis acetosella). It's sour and makes a nice snack when you're out in the woods. ;)

they look like what we used to call sour clovers - soft leaves that taste a bit like sorrel, when eaten, growing along the edge of forest in the sun dappled areas?

Shamrocks are usually actual clovers, but it appears that the name is applied to just about any plant that has roughly the same appearance. Sorrels do grow in the kind of places you described.

drache
02-09-2008, 05:35 AM
I thought shamrocks were a particular kind of very small clover that grows primarily in Ireland and has some special magical Irish attributes, elevating them in status above your regular red, white and purple clover

anji1971
02-09-2008, 11:01 PM
I called them shamrocks because they look just like the shamrock plants they sell at the flower shop at this time of year. But sorrel would definitely be more correct. We nibble on the stuff too when we're out hiking (we call it sour clover). :)

By the way, what kind of bird is that in your latest post, Stefan?? He's a very handsome looking fellow!;)

Since I had nothing better to do this (early) morning I did a little research on “shamrocks”, and found out a couple of interesting things. It seems that there is no one “shamrock plant’. Any of several three leaf plants can be correctly called shamrocks, including (the most popular) white clover (Trifolium repen), red clover, sorrels, and black medock. So if it looks like a shamrock it is OK to call it a shamrock. Now a four leaf clover (lucky) is most likely to be a white clover plant with an extra leaf, it cannot be a shamrock, because by definition a shamrock has three leaves. I just love this trivia stuff. Guess it’s time for bed.:o

I inadvertently dig up so many ant's nests when I'm gardening that I don't even notice anymore when they're frantically climbing up my arms and legs!!
The only time I have a problem is when they decide they want to move indoors -- had a fun time last summer with a bunch who found the cupboard with my baking supplies in it!!
'Crispy ant' shortbread, anyone???

It's a really nice day here today, in the 60's and sunny, and I took a nice long walk in our woods... hoping to get lucky and see some garters, but alas, it was not to be. I did get some pics tho, so thought I'd drag you all along with me...

Not sure what critter lives here. There were many of these mounds right next to our creek. Any ideas?

Here's our creek...

This was just a pretty bank shot...

And oops, someone lost their backbone

Some nice new moss

And some old moss under some old roots

Someone lost their head... this was probably some poor hunting beagle left to starve or shot. No bullet hole in the skull tho.

It was a nice walk even tho I didn't see any snakes. Maybe when it warms up a bit more. :-)

LOL-- cave trolls, yes, I thought that too, but I believe Kyle must be right on. :-) I couldn't think of what would make mud burrows, now I'll have to go look more carefully for crayfish!! Thanks Kyle!!

Sid, I never knew what those huge beetles were called-- here they're usually called chicken food if they don't run fast enough, lol... Unk beetles. Cool.

Lori, the painted turtle is similar in appearance, but a much smaller species (only about 4" long)

Tremble in fear at my hour of after school accomplishments, mortals!
I traversed the grounds of the local forest for snakes, found a few possible den sites, but to no snaky avail. I did, however, see the first frog and turtle of the season and put it in the area's wildlife center's record book.
Also, I got a picture of a fish species that has not been seen in the lake in it's existence: a dogfish. So, enjoy! :D (First link's pics, the one after this post will be a video.)
