I can. They are called "pantry moths" Hate them. Can't get rid of them and haven't figured out where they are coming from. I think maybe our attic, which would need an exterminator. We find them mostly in my living room.:mad:

I don't really kill anything unless it puts my dog at risk.. I mean, I removed (not kill) a copperhead from my yard. Didn't want to, theyre so damn cool, but my dog went where he was all the time and I couldn't have him being bit by it....

I kill black widows etc. That are in the house, but that's about it.

Grass hoppers here are very, very hard bodied. This little guy that I caught was extremely soft.

I used to have a barbeque lighter(the ones with a long nozzle thing) and I'd catch flies on fire when they landed near me. I hate flies. I did it with small spiders that had made their way onto my leg, arm or wherever else, too. I don't do that anymore, though.

My dog eats flies if you catch them and pull a wing off. Its funny, because she seems to think she's protecting us from the evil flies.

Same here. He thinks he's protecting. But he can catch them, especially if they landed. Then he chews it up, and spits it out, and looks at me like "see what i did??":)

This was earlier in the year, when the tornado hit, but it was (is) the biggest find of the year, cause it was right in my back yard!

He didn't bite or anything, calmest snake I've ever found. The video was fun, never filmed a snake in the wild like that. But it didt turn out great, it was windy... and not HD.:D

It looks like a different colour of one of the most common spiders here. I've seen a lot of different colours of them, but i don't know the name... I had one as a pet when I was 5 (I liked bugs at the time)

This is a pic of a Dove that lived in a white pine tree that we have in our yard. She had 2 babies under her that you can tell were 2 different ages. She would let me go right up to the tree to take pics.

The thing about the mourning doves...

They are normally not born more than 24 hours apart but unfortunately sometimes mom will neglect to feed one of them enough and so it gets way behind on growing, making it look like one is much younger but really what it is, is not enough to eat. That one will usually not make it. If food is scarce, then neglecting one of them ensures the other is strong enough to survive.

You sure that tree is pine? Needles are too short. Looks like a blue spruce.

Fall... don't know why but that's where my herping starts, i guess when the hot weather goes, the reptiles come out. I saw more in the last few days then i've seen all year. I did not expect this, of course, and didn't bring my camera half the time.

Found a BABY green snake, DEAD of course. But that means more are out there.

here is the biggest praying mantis i've ever seen. In the middle of the road second day in a row. I keep having to move him out of the road... kinda scary when he's in defensive mode!! (not really they don't hurt that much)

I was told it was a white pine sence the day it came from up north from me. It was about a foot to 2ft then. Its grown a lot. We used to be able to play frizbe over it and now we get poked from trying to get the frisbee when it goes under or in it...lol. I will look it up online and see if I can make sure by that. Ill let you all know what I find out.

Hmm.... the leaves are all still green here in SoCal, what very few trees there are in the high desert.(around 3800 ft) I guess that's because it's been so warm. We did have a cold snap recently. It's only around 70 F. Brrrr.... LoL.

But seriously, the nights have finally been getting cold. Around 45 F. No sign of fall colors in the leaves yet.:cool:

They're a pain to keep. I used to breed several species of spiny lizards including Western Fence. Takes a lot of space, (no more than one male and two females per 6 ft X 18 inch enclosure) a lot of insects every day, a lot of time, a lot of UV/sun exposure, etc. Very high maintenance and very touchy when it comes to husbandry. Definitely a challenge to keep them healthy in captivity.

Still seeing lizards active near my place. It's been gorgeous sunny weather around 70 F lately. Upper 30's at night though. Too arid for fence lizards though. Just seeing side-blotched lizards. (Uta stansburiana)

It's mainly their diet (large quantities of gut loaded soft insects every day) and space requirements (Males are territorial and they need multiple basking areas to avoid social stress) that makes it a pain. And UV needs are very high. Regular UV terrarium lights alone just don't cut it. Had to put them outside on sunny warm days in a screened enclosure for some real sun exposure as much as possible before I started having any luck with them thriving and breeding.

If conditions are right and they're doing well, they reward you with some very entertaining behavior though. Especially at breeding time:D

Got our first snow last night. Big wet flakes but didn't stick. It came at the tail end of a cold front that made it pour rain for 5 hours here in the SoCal high desert. Nice and sunny today, headed for a high in the upper 60's.

It's the "high" part that's important here. That's why it does that. Even if there is no storm (which is most of the time) the elevation can cause it to be well below freezing at night and scorching hot in the day. Snowed last night, almost 70 F today.:rolleyes:

Yeah, I've seen that same species of jumping spider in WA but here in SoCal, they're like 5 times bigger. I guess it's because of the long warm season, and this one had an abundant supply of flies. That's a horse coral.;)

And finally, here you can see the natural landscape where I am now. SoCal. High desert, about 3800 ft elevation, San Bernadino County. About 1.5 hours drive from Hollywood, CA. I know, crappy phone pic but that's the only camera I have on me at all times.

Had a really bad windstorm yesterday. In fact, the wind is still pretty bad right now. Anyway, when it first started, gusts were up to 60mph and this huge brown cloud swooped down over us and it got very dark at around 2:30 in the afternoon. (Dust storm) At times, it was dark enough that street lights started turning on. The dust passed pretty quickly and skies were blue again a few minutes later. Parts of Riverside/L.A. metro area are still without power since yesterday. Some parts of SoCal saw gusts up to 90mph. yikes. Went from 80 degrees to about 42 in a matter of 2 hours. Through it all, not a drop of rain.:cool:

I didn't have the camera sitting on anything in the bee picture. I was holding it. What I did was use manual focus and keep the camera at that focal distance. Then when I see a bee land, I move the camera to the correct distance until it's in focus, then shoot.

That's a darn good question. What if someone wanted to use the "D" word for their screen name? Hmmm....
And yes, it's another name for people named "Richard" and so is "Rick". A lot of my friends call me "Rick". One's legal name can be the D word, or it can be Rick, but sometimes people named Richard go by those alternative names. "Ricardo" is the Espanol version.

And thanks for the info on the I.D. of the plant. I was told it was some sort of squash or gourd, but the grower didn't know what kind.

Probably, but not in a way that's healthy for the bird. They need to constantly move. They rarely perch and rest... I've seen one, I guess, sleeping? for about 5 minutes... He always comes around our house in the spring, along with a cute little female.

The first, and only, time I saw one...I thought it was a bumblebee at first...it was just sitting there buzzing like a bee (well, flapping it's wings a mile a minute) and starring at me...and then I realized what it was. This young Wolf spider(?) was found on the living room floor after my daughter Molly found it crawling on her.
She of course over reacted and ordered the poor thing killed.
I on the other hand felt like protecting it. I won out as this young spider was taken to the basement to live out its life.

Got those here too. Well, maybe not that exact species, but definitely wolf spiders. The problem is the dang things are rather large (leg span about the size of a half dollar) and aggressive. This time of year they just don't stay in their webs. They like to wander around the house and bite. If you corner one they rear up and fight back. Unfortunately its very difficult for me to capture one alive without it escaping in the process so I have to kill them quickly before they get away.

The occasional small scorpion or camel "spider" in the bathroom doesn't bother me. They're slow and I can easily catch and release outside, but those wolf spiders are too darn fast. Gotta squish 'em when I have the chance.:(

Well, I went out herping for rattlers but the wind picked up too much and it got rather chilly so no luck there. But, I went back to the spot where I found that chrysalis and very carefully removed it from the wood it was attached to. Brought it in the house and keeping it warm. Put it in a large clear plastic container with a lid. I just want to see what comes out. It sure looks like a swallowtail butterfly chrysalis. I hope so. That would be awesome.

Terrible news. Well, sort of.

The chrysalis was definitely that of a Swallowtail butterfly. It "hatched". But here's the catch; what I got was 8 maggots emerging, leaving just a hollowed out shell. Not quite sure what kind of maggots, but they all went to pupa stage within 24 hours of emerging.

From what I could tell, they looked like wasp larvae. I can only conclude that the caterpillar was victim to a parasitic wasp.

For the sake of scientific curiosity, I'm now waiting for those 8 pupae to "hatch" out. I have a very strong suspicion that I will end up with 8 wasps.

I found this on the web: "Gambrus nuncius (Say) are about 5/16 inch long, reddish-black (basal half of abdomen reddish and rest black with a whitish yellow mark at the tip in females). The first segment of the male abdomen is black. This parasite attacks caterpillars of swallowtail butterflies"

Of course, the culprit could be any number of parasitic wasps that lay their eggs on caterpillars. In this case, apparently the wasp eggs were on the caterpillar when it went to pupa stage. Once I brought it in and warmed it up, they hatched and the wasp larvae ate the chrysalis from the inside out. Once all the food was exhausted, they emerged and soon pupated themselves. I can only assume that when the adult wasps emerge, they will mate and seek out caterpillars to lay their eggs on.

The sad thing is, these wasps are purposely introduced to areas as a way of controlling pest caterpillars. The problem is, they won't hesitate to prey on the caterpillars of endangered butterflies as well.

We went hiking again today. The kids are all here for spring break and I had the day off. We packed a lunch and lots of water. Bill built a camp fire at the top of the trail and we found some really cool stuff. No snakes yet, but it still gets pretty cold at night. Here is what we did find.

I wouldn't be so bad if the Eilean Donan was indeed on the banks of Loch shiel........lol. Claim to fame, I've walked across that bridge and around the Castle itself. :D I love the Highlands spent 3wks at Evelix just outside Dornoch up on the east coast. Fishing for freshwater pearls ( illegal now I think ) Went all over the highlands from there most of the touristy bit and some out of the way spots as well. ;)

Went on a short hike with my dogs this afternoon. Found an awesome spot for water snakes. I saw five within thirty minutes! I know where I'll be going on my next free day! Only took a couple photos. Had the dogs with me, so it was a little difficult trying to get close, but managed a couple of times.

Which one(s) ?? I know the first one is a red eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans). People dump those around my area too and they thrive.

Yeah that's what made me ask.. Never seen one like that. To me this was a fly lol. That thing was 3 times the size and colored like a bee. Threw me off.

Steve, I have checked both the UK and U S freshwater turtle sites for possible ID it looks like the animal in question could well be a hybrid of Red eared slider and a map turtle of some kind?? Given that pic was taken in the UK Who knows what it it is. That said It's unusual. ;)

The baby sea turtle, Leatherback? (Dermochelys coriacea) is awesome.

Honestly I'm not sure what kind it is. I wasn't expecting to see any there. And what's odd is that it was the only one, there wasn't another one in sight. I guess it was either an early or late hatcher.
