Woohoo! Found 2 Coronella austriaca, 1 Triturus cristatus and a bunch of Lacerta agillis yesterday!

All pretty darn rare in Holland so i had to take a couple of hundred pictures...pics will follow

Defenitly...The last time a C. austriaca was found in the area was in 2002! So we really did not expect to fine one...let alone two!
Besides that, its the rarest and hardest to find species in Holland. An other area where I'm volunteering in monitoring of this species, it requires around 18 hours of searching per snake...

Tried something different...would love to hear some honoust opinions!
I personally like the idea, but the toad (bufu bufo) looks off-centred, I don't like the sharp piece of grass in the upper right corner, the toad could have been lower (showing more blue) and last but not least...the position of the animal...I found the animal this way and it was more dead then alive (I guess it shows...)

I shouldn't comment, I don't have an eye for that kind of stuff. :) But the straw right in the middle of the photo would have bothered me if I was the photographer and the animal is a bit off-center, now that you mention it. ;)

the straw in the middle bothers me most - makes the poor critter look like it's been skewered
but then again it could be a not so subtle comment on the condition of the toad, whereupon the straw to the right provides the balance to the toad being off center - the entire composition bearing uncomfortable allusions to the crucifixion as well as witch burnings (the stake and the pile of flame fodder beneath); however, the full symbolic relevance of this piece can only be at length expounded upon by someone who needs to write a paper for an art class
overtired in a goofy mood - is it showing?

Thanks for the comments and Anji I do feel very luckly with the diversity here, but the finds do take a lot of hours in the woods, fields and lakes. The photos I posted were of the best day this year. Five hours of work for myself and my sons Jason and Mike.

I fear it may not stay alive for much longer, if it doesn't soon move to a safer location. There's a cottage about 5 meters and a path about a meter away and both are used by people who kill snakes on sight.

It is sad that some people kill snakes on sight. I may not like to be in close proximity to venomous snakes, but I know they have their place and would not kill them. I hope she does move to a safer spot.

Hay Stefan! It’s that time of year again, made new solitary bee/wasp house. Was going to clean out the old one but it looks like something was using it already. For those who do not know me, I love these little solitary wasps and bees that make nests in holes. There are thousands of species all around the world, and each likes a specific hole size. Some are bees, some wasps, each has a favorite pray, I have seen ones that bring in only green spiders, some yellow spiders and some little green caterpillars. There are even little green parasitic bees that sneak in and lay their eggs in other nests. Most plug nests with mud, but some use leaves (which they cut to fit) and others use fibers. And best of all they are harmless, most are very non aggressive because they are not defending a nest. Just fun to watch.:D

Easily the largest grass snake (Natrix natrix) I've ever seen. Well over a meter long, my best guess would be 120 - 130 cm, large enough to easily take a vole or a mouse. The pictures really don't do its size justice.

Found these little Robins(Turdus migratorius ).
There was 3 but we found one dead. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Robins. Have raised at least 50 in my life. Very smart and do well in captivity.

Found this Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) under the same tree as the Robin. 25 foot up is too much for me. Looks like I have another mouth to feed. I don't think that will help. As a rule these guys don't afford much pity around our place. They're nest robbers and that doesn't sit well. I do feel kind of bad as I was watching a pair of Robins defend their nest from this ones parents. I thought they were after the baby Robins, when all they wanted was their baby that had fallen to the ground. We'll give the guy a weeks worth of feed and shelter then it's out the door. Now, if it were a Robin that would be different. They make great companions. Kind of like a dog with feathers. As a little boy and then a young man I kept a flightless Robin for 12 years. Named him "Bird". He died, bald and blind. My Vet. stated he was probabaly the longest living Robin ever. I miss my old friend. He used to ride around with me when I started driving.

I vacationed recently by a lake in Virginia and had the chance to go herping. We didn't see as much as I had hoped but it was still great!

This is a juvenile Five-Lined Skink lizard. The cute little guy actually bit me when I caught him. He couldn't even break the skin though. Haha.
The blue in his tail is much more stunning in reality than it is in the photo.

This Black Rat Snake was a real surprise. He was under a board in an abandoned barn. (I love abandoned barns!). We estimated him to be about 3 or 4ft in length.
Earlier in the trip we accidentally came across another Black Rat Snake that was about 6 or 7ft in length, it was incredible. Naturally, I didn't have my camera with me at that moment...Grrrr.

Found this poor guy on the side of the road. I wasn't sure what species he was, but I'm thinking mud snake. I'm also pretty sure he was dead, judging by the pool of blood around his mouth.

Spotted this guy under a fallen tree near the stream where I've been releasing my garters. I wasn't sure whether he was a nerodian or a moccasin, and I wasn't going to get any closer to find out.

A friend is raising snapping turtles. This little(haha) alligator snapping turtle only weighs 120 pounds. Its head is 9 inches across. I watch it eat strawberries.
He has many other but this one is the largest. Some of the other are in the 70 and 80 pound range. Very impressive.

I was herping by a stonewall yesterday morning and had some terrific luck.

I saw a few eastern garters basking. A couple yards farther down the wall, I was startled by two large Timber Rattlesnakes. Both were at least 4ft long, gorgeous, grumpy and really fat.

I kept returning to the site to take pictures as they shifted to various poses throughout the morning. One of them was much more photogenic than the other.

One female is like orange-brown !Always at 2 or 3 feets from were a I park my car ,the other one the female after a meal ,full toad and from along this road.

This female Is well known to me.
I keep this orange female for 2 years in a row i release her each time ,her babies turn brown with age !!!This garter is there since 2004 always take sunny bath in the same bush.
This is her with other females last year.There is a tiny difference between her brown an other orange female.All release and i keep see theme .
Two of theme were caught by friend near my hunting spot ,I was use to see those female And I leave them alone.I return with him to release the 2females were he pick it up .
that why sometime I keep wc female to see what babies will look like.release them after few meals.

@Charles; Yep, thats correct.
We spend 3 hours searching for 1.5 snakes (One got away).
Multiply that with 3 people that where looking and it makes nine hours of searching for just one snake...
This snake is found in an area where a known population of 15 animals live. But as you'll realise...15 isnt a healthy population so there must be loads more. Its just impossible to find any!
