Well to come down to it...... Little Dude may be a soon to be proud father and Hudina, possibly may be pregnant.... If so then she is about three weeks along:D What does anyone else think from the pics.

I am not totally sure...... She has been eating as much as a little piglet lately. She seems to always be hungry, and every night she is searching around for food.

Ok Hudina is soooo very odd...... She has been doing some odd attitude for her... She keeps going around the tank and rubbing her face on the glass. She has never done this before, and it is kind of wierd. I was thinking maybe she is getting ready to shed, but she is not graying out and she does not look like she is about to shed. And then right after that she went to her water bowl and started fishing around like she was looking for fis h to eat... so I put a pinkie in the water for her (sometimes she likes to fish for the food). So what does she do... she left that one in the water and went back over to the other side of the tank and decided to eat the pinkies that are on the plate.... So far she has devoured three pinkies, and looks like she is contemplating eating more. .....mind you, this is only her first spring, and she is measureing in at about 20 inches long.... Oh yeah, and she ate three pinkies just the day before yesterday........She has been really spastik all day too. She almost seems jumpy and she even recoiled back earlier today like she was going to strike.....I normally have to really bother her for her to do that..... I do not know what her trip is....(hypervigilance?)... Ok I think that she is stopping eating at three pinkies.

I don't know enough about your snakes to tell you for sure but what you described is at times do to temps that are too hot, especially what you said about the water bowl.

Like I said that is only one possiblility. The thing that I believe we all love most about Garters is their crazy tendencies and the fact that they are not always predictable like other snakes are.

Ok I just checked the thermometer thing.... and it is sitting on the bottom of the tank on the side with the under tank heater.... and it is running at 81.6 F ........Everything that i have read says that it should be running between 75 and 85... So I an not sure that the tank is too hot.....

Possibly,.... she just seems to be really jumpy right now. Sorry but is the only thing I can think of to describe how she is acting.

Thanks.. I really enjoy Little Dude. He is so mellow and docile. He is the one that i will take out and chill with while on the PC. Hudina is a whole nother story though. I take her out and she is bee lining to find a new way to hide. Too many spots with a five yr old son, that I am fearful for her safety if she were to actually get away.

Quick question for any one who has had this issue......
I got Little Dude the very day that he arrived at Petco,. so I know that it was not their mishandleing but the breeders. While he was at the breeders, he had a shed (like all snakes do) but a small portion was retained on his tail. When I noticed it I helped him to get rid of it by soaking his tail in warm water and gently rubbing the tip of the tail... well to make the story short,... the tip of his tail came off with the shed. It has since healed. and he has had many sheds since then, but he is not able to do a complete shed by himself. He gets from the head down to the vent and then from the vent to the tip I have to help him with removing the shed.........
Does this seem normal? Will he eventually be able to shed on his own?

Ps I have no issues helping him shed and in all actuality that is our "special" time, but I worry that he will never be able to shed on his own.

Great to here he has someone who will take care of him, now. If there's a way you can up the humidity in the enclosure that might help with the shed problem. You might check the vent area very closely. If there is a scale problem that is in the healing phase it might explain the trouble he's having. More than likely it's a problem that will straighten itself out in time. Keep up the good work.

Thanks... Other then the slight scarring at the very tip of the tail (from where it healed after he lost the tip) There appears to be nothing wrong that would prevent him from shedding on his own..... He just has alot of problems shedding from the vent to the tail.

Other then that.... I will just continue to enjoy our shedding time together.

Question to anyone... my snakes have been fed mainly on a diet of pinkie mice,and few live fish every now and then for a treat. I have just now offered medium night crawlers to them (I want to have Hudina and Little Dude on a varied diet) , and both snakes are acting like the worms are not even there. Any thoughts?

Let them get hungry. I think for most garters, hunger in commonplace. They'll change their tune when they realize it's the only thing on the dinner plate.
I hate to be the one to break the news to you but you may have spoiled them. This being something I would never do. Sorry, I have to go one of my baby radixes wants held.:D

Thanks.... I will try that. I have a couple of worms in bowl for them... See if they get interested a bit later on in the night.... Night time is normally when they like to eat....Spoiled them?:rolleyes: Very possibly..... If not that, then they just have me well trained :D

it's a myth that all garters will like worms
I've got several garters who don't care much for worm
a couple will go hide
my concinnus female actually tried one because the pallidulus female she houses with goes nuts over worms; once was enough though; now when sees a worm, she goes slithering backwards
and frankly - I don't think worms are nutritionally essential

Your right, I should have clarified my experience with this feeding stradegy. It is with radixes only. Worms are the main food source in this area.

Yeah... i am going to give it one more go around this evening...... I want to give them a varied diet like they would have more of in the wild. If they don't do the worms then I guess that I will stick to pinkies and goldfish as a treat every now and then..
Oh yeah,... I keep hearing about radix's and all kinds of other types fo garters, but I rarely hear of another person that has checkereds... that is what I have and if someone else has experience with what their checkereds like that would be appreciated.

Ok... Hudina just did a full shed.... She is near impossible to measure by myself, since she does not like staying still..... So I measured her shed...... This is her first spring and her shed is already measiuring at 23 inches long..... so guess maybe an inch shorter since the shed streches (im sure) and that would put her at about 22 inches long.... She is getting so big!

Ok every one...... I just got a new snake.... I kow it is not a garter but he/she was so cute in the tank and it was the only one out of the five that was cruising that I just had to get it........

My only issue is that Petco does not sex their snakes.... Does anyone have a clue on how to sex a Baby Ball Python..... Without probing (for one I have no idea how to do that and two It looks very traumatic for the snake.)

Well I just wanted to share this... My little niece who is only a year and a half old, caught her first garter snake this last weekend.... She lives back in Montana......

The garter that my niece caught is wild.. never been in a store.... I am so proud of her, she like snakes just like her aunty... now for the ball python..he/she has been eating really good since I got him/her last week. It keeps wanting to eat and since it is a baby I am letting it. I am not sure or how well petco fed my baby ball so I have just let it eat as it wants for the moment...

Man..... now I am really confused! I was doing a full tank cleaning today for Little Dude and Hudina, and Little Dude is getting huge...... Again some one remind me please ... Is the boy or girl suppose to be bigger? Little Dude is bigger then Hudina.

in garters, generally the girls tend to be bigger - sometimes a lot bigger

why not post photos of the 4" area around the vent (2" up to 2" down from the vent), so we can help you determine their genders; profile shots work best for me

Sometimes, when male garters get REALLY lonely (Or, it could be a display of dominance, who knows?) they copulate with other males. I've seen it twice, even between two different garter species.

The tail bases on both of them are thick. That's where the hemipenes are stored.

Well the other way I can tell is that Hudina is definitely a male, no question on that.
The other one must be male because it's copulating with him. Females don't do that.
Also, you'll never see female snakes with bulges that large.

The female's tail tapers a lot more quickly. Both of yours have extremely chubby tail bases for longer down the tail.
Coincidentally, are both of those pics from Wandering garter snakes? They tend to have longer tails outright, and the females tend to have a little bump at the base of their tail as well.

I think they were.... Yeah I just checked. They are from the Sexing Pics thread. Well that just sucks.... I guess I do not have to worry about babies on the way then... Man that means that I am the only female in my house :(
