I have always wanted to get a picture of a newborn snake's bellybutton but seem to be busy with the babies. By the time I think about it(24 hours later) it's gone.
Not today. I got my picture and thought I would share.

It is about 1/2 an inch above the cloaca. It's not there very long.

Jason,

I know how you feel. I have handled hundreds of newborns and never noticed it. Then one day I saw it and thought it was an injury. Much to my surprize it turned out to be the snakes navel(bellybutton). I've wanted a photo of it for almost a year and could never remember to get it.
I'll try to get another photo in the morning. That should be about 12-15 hours after they were born.

Yeah, I've seen this on snakes from birth to about 10 months. After that it seems to heal over.

I can still make them out on my adults :) ... I think the darker the bellyscales the easier it is too.

Now you've got me curious. I've never seen it on an adult but then I've never looked either. I wonder if I have any adults I could look at:rolleyes::D

I'm pretty sure it can be seen on any snake, at any age.

I've checked half a dozen of my sub-adults and can't see anything. Not a blemish, dark area or anything that says the scales have been disturbed. I'll keep checking.

it looks like sort of a slit. Just like, 3 or 4 belly scales that are divided or creased. Some have it more obviously than others!!
