I finally managed to get some reasonably clear (actually not that clear but maybe clear enough?) photos of my wriggly little tetra and was wondering if you might be able to tell me if I have been left with Fran or Sanchez? :D Thanks guys!

Looks like a male to me. Stays wide for awhile after the vent. I say male. Body size also tells me male.

The body size is a funny one with this little creature... This is one of my "eternal babies". ;) Though it is growing now, it's certainly taking its time.

I hate to break the news to you. That's not a Garter. It's one of those cheap China "look-a-likes":D I'll take it off your hands. I don't mind. I'll even pay for the shipping.
It's just the kind of guy I'm am. No thanks necessary.

Any ideas?

Oooh and there's more...
(btw, James, if this is all in the wrong place, please feel free to move!)

I say first photo, female. Second, Male. If there's 3 then the last would be male, also.

The second one is a bit more nervous, too, than the first.

Sorry, I was on my way out the door when I looked. 4 sick kids headed to the Dr. All with strep throat.

Revised- Male, female, male

The first photo is the hardest to see. Looks pretty thick. I still say male. If you can post a better photo that would be great.

I don't have any questions about the 2nd and 3rd,female,male.

I should have explained... the first three are all the same snake and then there are 3 of the other one. Two snakes, three pictures each. :)

I got them from Alan Francis, identified as one of each so that part should be correct, but I have never been able to tell the difference and I have to say I am now even more confused, lol! JAAAAMES! Please help!

The tetrataenia is undoubtedly male. The first concinnus is female, the second is male.:)

Woohoo! Thank you! You will have to teach me someday in person.

The little rascals aren't keen on being handled and have done a great job musking all over me today, but I will try to get some sideways pictures someday.

My cheap China "look-a-like" mom is very insulted now !! :D

But to the genders, the tetra is a male for sure and the first concinnus looks like a female (not sure) and the second a male (more likely)

(Poor little Fran didn't make it then...no tetrataenia babies for me either :()

She just never grew. Ate only worms and occasionally a bit of trout or salmon. She lived with us for a bit more than a year but then just gave up. :(

I've been watching those stuffed animals on ebay. That's as close as I'll ever get to a S.F.Garter(Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia ). You didn't have to rub it in.:D

I'm not sure .. with my concinnus it was tough as they were both exactly the same length and I found that Xena didn't have a pronounced female tail-shape.The only difference to tell her apart from Xerxes was girth. If this is the physically bigger of the two then I'd say you still have your girl. If you weren't so far away I'd offer Xerxes as a stud lol ... :) in any case, hope we both find the right concinnus soon.

I'm with you Rhea, Tapper from the cloaca isn't pronounced. It tapers but only after that thick looking area. I would say 85% male.

Ok, guys, you have me worried now- that's the same snake you identified as female a few days ago, lol!
This is making things a little complicated now as I am a viv short. I had put "it" with my only other female garter, Zulu, but they are of different breed so I best get sorted so they don't cross breed. If it's not too late. :o Eeek!

Different photos offer different views. A visual(photo or first hand) confirmation is, of course just an educated guess. True, confirmation is firsthand knowledge of copulation, probing or birthing. We certaining don't want to confuss you, only help the best we can. Having both of the photos together would offer us those different views for comparison. Sorry, for any confusion on my part.:)

 double check ... was there a noticable size difference between the two? ... Xena could have confused people too .... but she was definately a big girly.

I'm so sorry, I wrote the post this morning before rushing out of the door and I thought later it might have sounded as if I was blaming you when you were all just trying to help. That's not the case, I do realise it's not as easy to identify from photos and am very grateful to you for trying. :)

Greg, this snakey is a little smaller than the other, but not hugely so.

I have actually still got the dead snake refrigerated as we were waiting to bury her today. Maybe I'll take a couple more pictures? If that's not too gross?

Thumbnails this time so they don't take up too much space:

(pictures 1 and 5 show the dead snake only, otherwise it's the one in the background, with the red dot after the vent.)
