Since I don't have any garter snakes at the moment I thought I would share a picture of one of my other pets. It is a Theloderma corticale or Vietnamese mossy frog. Enjoy!

Thanks. I really like these guys. I bought 3 juvies hoping to get a pair, but alas, they are all males. So now I need to buy a female or buy another "bunch" of young ones (hoping for a female). Oh, what to do, what to do?!

They really are beautiful animals. How are you keeping them? What are you feeding them? How do they spawn? You can't just tease us with a couple of photos, LeAnn.... Give us all the info!:D

Oh alright, they are a semi aquatic tree frog. I have them in a 20 gallon tall aquarium with a screen lid. The water is about 6 inches deep. The "land" area takes up about 1/4 of the tank. The "land" area is made up of some rocks formed into a planter with a pothos plant. There is also a piece of mopani wood for them to crawl onto. I filter the water and there are some submerged plants to help with water quality (basically treat it like an aquarium). They eat large crickets (or roaches, but I don't have any of these). No special heat or lighting required. I do have a light for the pothos. I will try to get photos of the new tank arrangement tomorrow.

They usually deposit their eggs at or just above water level on the rocks or driftwood (or cork if you have that). From what I've read they spawn about every 3-5 weeks with about 10-40 eggs per "batch", I'll let you know what mine do if I ever get mine to breed.

I'm getting the frog bug
it's a terrible affliction
I caught it just from rubbing a rodent on a frog and now it's . . .
well, if the garters affliction is like a fatal flu, the frog affliction is sort of like a bad cold
Sean just got a bunch of frogs in and I want . . .
more tree frogs, some tomato frogs and one of those bull frogs that grow gigantic
and that's just from the ones I've seen
he doesn't have any mossy frogs
no matter - I can't have any more - sniff
maybe a buddy or two for Ronnie, the dumpy frog, but that's it

Indigos and Cribos are both Drymarchon, very captivating genus. Much like Thamnophis. Keep in mind permits are required in some if not all states to own Indigos. It's not hard to get and I think is around $100.

cribo's are nothing like garters.I never saw a garter smash a rat into the sides of its cage until it was dead!

Some Garters are psychotic, could you image what an 6-8 foot Garter would be like? That's a scary thought.
Their behavior is actually quite similar.

Which cribo is it?

Drymarchon melanurus unicolor, right?

My guess as well, she was sold as a Black Tail Drymarchon melanurus melanurus but is most likely an intergrade of the two. She is from LTC parents.

Thanks all for the replies, this site is great for that.

KEWL! another Dry keeper! I have a pair of Eastern Indigos & a pair of Blacktail Cribos.

I had a pair of cribos that over heated & died last year during a heat wave:( I was soo upset @ myself over it. Did not realize they were as sensitive to the heat as they are, otherwise I would of moved them downstairs. Anyhow, I bought a pair @ the Sacramento show this year & they are doing great:D Both ate fuzzie mice today!

I had a pair .I sold them in 2004.I had a legal problem with my moms house after she died and had to sell them.I still regret it!My male is pictured above. My female was all black. They are similar to garters in ways. They always give you eye contact when you enter the room.Watch what you are doing.Thats where the similarities end. They are way messier and are crazy when you feed them.especially if the food is alive. If you get bit you are probally going to the hospital for stitches. They have a extremely powerful bite!

snakeman, I know about how messy they are:eek: The male Eastern used to be kept right above the computer. I was sitting here on a few occassions when I thought I heard someone farting & it turned out to be the snake "taking a dump". If you do not clean it out right away, he smears it all over the glass. It also has a distinct odor to it & we refered to them as "Indigo granades". My wife would call me @ work to tell me to clean the cage as soon as I got home. Never got that with any other snake.

Ok, so I figured having loose stones around the water outlet was a bad idea...I was right, the frogs kicked the stones away.

So I decided a fake plant would do a good job of hiding the water outlet...seems to work, we'll see what the frogs do to the plant...

I have had them since about september of 2007. They are pretty neat. They do seem to have a little personality. They dont get real big, which I think is good.
I dont do a whole lot with them, they just kinda live, and seem pretty content. I feed them just enough to keep them healthy, mostly romain and collared greens, and a few other things off the list on that website. They are a m/fm pair, and I have seen them mate, but no eggs yet.
I do let them shut down for several weeks in the winter, but dont give them a full-on brumation. They seem happier if I let them sleep for a while in the winter.
They live a really long time, so they are a commitment, but I also think they are pretty low maintanence. I got them for free- someone in my church needed to rehome them, and said they would rather give them to me than sell them to a stranger.
I keep them on the sand/bedabeast mixture like on the website. it works fine.

I had some and they're lovely snakes
none of mine - not even the skittish one - ever tried to bite
I was able to get mine to take frozen/thawed pinkies, but they really prefer fish
try trout, salmon, or tilapia
you will have to use a supplement also and if you're up for it, I highly recommend trying the fish mixture some people on this forum have been making:

I have a Striped Keelback (Xenochrophis Vittatus). I heard sombody say they are "rear fanged" and are venoumous, yet others say they are not. Ah which is it?

Also sold as "Asian Garters" or "Indonesian Garters"

I do believe they are rear fanged....meaning enlarged teeth in the back, generally grooved, to direct saliva into the wounds....some rear fanged snakes are harmless, hardly any reaction to bites, whereas some can deliver pretty bad, possibly fatal bites. I haven't heard of these snakes biting, are very mellow.

To be perfectly honest and very blunt, yes this snake is venomous and is rear fanged. Those that are saying they are not, are actually meaning to say that the snake is "considered harmless". That never changes the fact that they do carry rear fangs in that mouth of theirs. No it does not mean that this snake's bite is comparable to that of a rattlesnake or a mamba, but by the books, this is a venomous animal. They are considered harmless snakes, but hey, so were the red-necked keelback and the lyre snake, until they up and killed someone, and seriously wounded a few others. Lyre snakes are now outlawed as pets in a state or two ( forget which) because ONE person, a small boy, got bit, had a serious reaction, and died. Before that it was commonplace to pick them up, play with them, keep them as a first pet like so many of us did with garters as kids. The tiger keelback was also once considered harmless but that's not so much the case anymore. Rear fangs are enlarged, grooved, fixed teeth in the back of their mouth meant to aid the "chewing" of toxins into the skin of predator or prey. It's a terrible delivery system, but nonetheless it's still there. They are not hollow and do not "inject" venom like most front fangs would, which for some reason seems to scare and intimidate people a lot more, but that does not necessarily make it any less dangerous, considering some of the deadliest species of snake are rear fanged. Hognoses are rear fanged/venomous, garters are rear fanged/venomous, and even with those "totally harmless" species, some people do have negative reactions. I've not taken a hognose bite but I hear that it puffs a bit and itches a lot. To most, the striped keelback's effect have been noted as practically harmless, but in all seriousness, if you really are that volatile when it comes to allergic reactions, I would strongly consider not keeping this snake anymore. Very little is actually known about the full effects and complexity of the toxins that these snakes secrete. Even though they are not prone to biting at all, should an accident happen, and you do have a reaction, there is nothing that they can give you at the hopsital to reverse the process. I really, really do not get why pet stores are getting these snakes to sell. Very little is known about them overall, they are a delicate, exotic snake from overseas and they are being misrepresented! They are definitely not your run of the mill pet snake like the ball pythons, corn snakes and kingsnakes you see being sold alongside them. I am not trying to be mean or deter you from keeping your pet.... just trying to help you out!

As Shannon says, this is a venomous species. Although the toxins are believed to be very mild, I would be cautious if you're 'allergic to everything'.

The African Twig Snake Thelotornis kirtlandi was also considered harmless until someone died as a result of an envenomated bite.

I'm not so sure they make great pets either. I never heard of anyone keeping them alive for very long at all. They are always wild-caught and as far as I can assertain they are always loaded with parasites.
I think they're one for a keeper who's prepared to spend a lot of money to get them established.

When it comes to constriction, they're not in the same league as Pituophis or the Boids, but still highly effective constricors, routinely using this method to kill their prey.

The baby balls were so cute, Dorothy dragged me back out empty handed.

Glad yours is doing so well.

They are very docile for the most part. (rare exceptions excluded)

I was given 2 leopard geckos back in June 2008. One had an issue with her front legs, stuck shed(about 4 months worth), I got it off, & she looks alot better. She is a very good eater, well was... 2 months ago, she stopped eating, & one of her eyes shut closed. I know why did I wait so long.. Well my hubby doesn't care, he is super mad at me, I took Bella to the vet today.

She is on a dewormer & baytril antibiotic. I am alittle upset, that my hubby just wanted me to let her die. He said the money I spent on the vet visit & meds, I could have bought 2 more healthy geckos.

So Bella looks like she is on the road to recovery!! I am an ALL animal lover, no matter what kind it is. On the other Hand, Miss Jenna is doing well.

thanks for listening to me whine,.....

Stephanie, some people just won't ever understand that lives are not disposable. It's not about replacing them one after the other... it's about being responsible for the ones you've taken on and seeing it out to the end. But whether he'll ever understand that is doubtful!!!

But all is well, you did the right thing and he should appreciate your dedication and compassion!!!

why would she let her snake get that far?
how long would that have taken to get to the bottom knuckle?

whats your opinion on this?

this is pretty stupid
but I did take our beardie to Prospect Park before we had a backyard
it was just the only outdoors/real sunlight he could get, because even with the harness the fire escape was more scary, and I'm a fervent believer in the positive effects of real sun and fresh air

I have been thinking for some time now that we should get a lizrad.I wanted something that my wife can handle since she won't go near either of our snakes!I was hoping for something relativly docile, size isn't a major issue as I can build what ever size enclosure I need!thanks:)

I'm partial to Monitors, But probably the best choice would be a bearded dragon.

Iguanas are great, but some grow to have nasty tempers and they can be frail.

Monitors can bee sweethearts, or mini crocodiles, it's a gamble what you'll wind up with.

we have a leopard gecko, very docile, they dont grow very big, they have awesome morphs, ours likes to sit on our shoulders and nap:D

well the fact that she said it does it all the time is disturbing... BUT....

My very first snake Bandit is a california kingsnake. He often decides that my hand in the tank = food and tries to grab me. One time, he got the tip of my ring finger and before I even KNEW what had happened, my 4 foot kingsnake had it swallowed all the way down as far is he could go. It hurt a LOT... usually, running them under water makes them let go, not Bandit!!! I tried cold water, then some whiskey, then rubbing alcohol, and finally I ran the hot water under the faucet and had to quickly bob his head under it about 3 times before he would finally let go. It took 15 minutes to get him off me!!! He definitely was not injured by spitting my finger out of his mouth, its so lubed up with saliva that it won't hurt them.... but the fact that this woman decided to stop and videotape it instead of try and get the snake off, and the fact that she allows this to happen often is just plain stupid. In my opinion, that video shows no abuse, just stupidity.

everybody loves our beardie, and he has quite the personality
I did foster a leopard gecko for a while and liked her
the uromastyx are goofy and great eaters (vegetarian - a great boon), but they can move a bit fast and they need a ton of heat
our crested gecko is wonderful to hold and also pretty much vegetarian - easy to feed
for docile and personable I also highly recommend a blue tongue skink, and those don't even move fast

That's the only way I'd ever get one Rhea. When we got Cain, I had no interest in a BP, but I could not leave him in squalor.

There is a rescue about 80 miles from here that has BP, Red Tail Boas and Iguanas frequently.

those turn up at Sean's rescue frequently as well - those and endless amounts of turtles
we brought home Stumps, the russian tortoise yesterday - pics to follow soon
btw - if anyone wants to adopt a really beautiful iguana at Hamburg, Sean will be bringing the one I've been fostering, and he's wonderful

Stumps is cute :)

We adopted a Cornsnake from our local Humane Society. His previous owner apparently didn't think to find him and his lady friend a new home before moving on and left the snakes in an apartment. He's a little thin and had patches of left over shed.

Thanks guys :) I love love the yellow on his sides. He's not nearly as active and fun to watch as Simone is. I put him in a tub and set him in the bathroom while my older two took there showers, then wiped him off with a warm damp rag. Managed to get the patches of old shed off. His G/F is still at the shelter, she's full of eggs and won't be released untill she lay's them. Sad thing, is I think they're just going to trash the eggs.

Why does her being with eggs stop you from getting her now? Is that a shelter rule? and if so, why?
I've never hatched snake eggs before but have done my share of turtle eggs. Any chance you can get the eggs? It's a big undertaking and I can understand if you woudn't want to do it.

shelters tend to take the tack that there's not much reason to propagate animals that ended up there to begin with, since that does say something about supply and demand
