Love is suddenly in the air in my snakeroom. My whitesided black rats are showing signs of courting each time I introduce them, as are my okeetee cornsnakes (female still needs to shed). Hopefully, those two pairs will follow through. My hybrid kings from great valley serpentarium are are courting as we speak. By courting I mean, the male has the female's neck in his mouth and is roughly shoving her around with his body. She is being submissive and receptive. The female erythristic water snake is fatter than ever. So, hopefully, baby season is on its way for me!
Oh, and my dad's friend apparently has a property that is absolutely chock full loaded with snakes, Mainly garter and water snakes. He has a bunch of vernal pools and a stream in his property and he told me "the snakes are out, crazy bastards are chasing the spring peepers all over the place!"
I'm going up tomorrow for some spring herping, provided it's not raining :D

no photo entry, but . . .
some of you probably remember my beardie, Henner
he needed to go to the vet today
he's always been a fussy eater, and he's always lost a little weight in winter, but this year, he just totally lost his appetite and got constipated to boot
I've been soaking him more frequently, once I realized it was a bit worse than usual
it seems that now he needs to hear running water to stimulate peristalsis
I ordered him an entire selection of all his favourite bugs - to no avail
his hip bones are sticking out now, and it's scary, so he went to the vet today
she couldn't get any blood from him, but she gave him fluids and B12, and I'm force feeding him carnivore care at home
hopefully he'll start eating on his own soon - several of the hornworms are already too big for him

Henner went back to the vet yesterday
the force feeding isn't going well, because he bites through everything I stick in his mouth - turned the tip of my left index finger into a flap too, but it's healing back on
so yesterday the vet managed to get some blood from him and he's anaemic as well. as it turns out, she had a beardie patient with the same symptoms before, and at the time consulted with Dr Mader about it. it's a yellow fungus infection. I'll have to give him oral meds for six to eight weeks. thankfully the antifungal comes in raspberry flavour, but stlll - there's baytril for three weeks. I really must get better at sticking things in his mouth and keeping my fingertips out of it.

wow you're gonna keep a snapping turtle??!
It's not the turtle but the way they are raised:D
I've only had 1 nice snapping turtle in my life. Most are biting/eating machines. This one seems very calm and content, so far. She's already shown signs of growing and we've only had her 3 week. Snapping turles are one of my childhood turtles. I lived a couple blocks from the Missouri River and hand caught many. My biggest was a very nice 25 lb female. I called her George.

do those always turn nasty when they get older, or is it more of a personality thing?
they're really cool; Sean had one at the rescue a week ago
on the home front, I am becoming much better at prying Henner's mouth open - did it seven times today for various meds and feedings; it's going to be a long eight weeks
he did possibly have a few nibbles of the sorrel I offered, so I'm hopeful that his appetite may be returning soon and he'll eat on his own before long

As a rule they turn nasty. My 25 lb snapper would let me scratch her neck. She would stretch it out and turn it to the side when I put my hand by her face. She would also let me handfeed her. I was about 12 years old at the time and am lucky I still have all me fingers. I miss old George. She escape(they are great diggers) one night from her outside enclosure and I never saw her again.
I just realized what I typed *handfeed* That's what could have happened. Feeding her my hand!

Here in Iowa you must a fishing license. You are aloud to take up to 100lbs of live snapping or 50lbs of dresses out(if you're into that kind of thing)
I think that fishing permit also serves for keeping live ones.

to those of you who remember Henner - he was buried in our garden this afternoon
here's a photo from last summer
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3058/2735571157_967f608a9d_b.jpg
this morning I could have sworn that he was getting better, and then suddenly he was gone
after getting permission from Mikhaila, Sean cut him open, and we found three masses on his liver. I took photos, if anyone is interested, pm me. In deference to Mikhaila, Sean only cut a long slit and pulled the organs out, and it's a bit hard to see what's what.
so we're a bit sad. Henner has been with us for four years and we've spent many sunny afternoons in the park or garden together
Then, in the midst of comforting Mikhaila, I glance over to the uro cage and - freaking hell!
it's this
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2381/3528940015_41d95277ce_b.jpg
so I'm happy too - this was entirely unexpected; well - not really; I've brought her to Sean's twice in the past six weeks, because she'd been so tubby, and I wanted his opinion. I sure hope I can keep those eggs just right
what a day! death, eggs, and swallowed cage carpet
my head is spinning

Saying good bye to friends is always a hard thing. The memories are the great part. Reliving those great times. I will start laughing out of the blue, my kids know I'm thinking about my dog Allie. She might be gone but really gone.
I am so sorry for your loss. I still remember the posts about Henner and your cats and it makes me laugh.
Congrats on your eggs. I look forward to seeing baby Uros.

Mikhaila has been very upset about the loss and I've been feeling like his cage is a sort of hollow place right now
since I didn't have any better safe place to put my make-shift incubator for the uro eggs, I've put it in there - seems kind of fitting
I'm not ready to think about whose permanent residence it will become, but I guess they'll have to share the space with the incubator, since I don't want to move that until they hatch
I've never had eggs before . . .
Gwennie, the mom, is doing well - just really thirsty, and probably ready for her next rehydrating; she looks almost normal now, but yesterday, after she laid the eggs, she looked just like a wrinkled bag of bones. I've been giving her electrolytes with her water, and tons of food - even a rose.
I guess keeping busy with her care and the eggs is helping me not to dwell on Henner too much and that's okay
thanks for all your kind words

this is so nerve-wracking
my kingsnake Layla is having a male visitor, and I'm not sure how different he - trying to eat her would look from he - trying to mate with her
don't they bite the female's neck?
he's a tiny bit bigger than she
earlier, they disappeared into her hide with their tails entwined, and I had to pick up the hide, to make sure everything was okay
I'm going to separate them when I'm not here and lock him into a small space with some dead rodents
sorry - no photos yet; that tank needs a window cleaning
just keep your fingers crossed nobody eats anybody
I'm going to go check again now

Just make sure that when they are together, you are watching them. You can tell when a kingsnake is seeing the other one as food as opposed to a mate. I noticed my male cali king, who doesn't see my female king who's half cali, as anything but a meal, will deilberately start looking for her head in a rather aggressive manner, paying no attention to the rest of the snake and being sure not to touch her at all. (they like to grab other snakes by the head). My other male king, who bred my female this year, was different in his approach. He climbed on top of her back and rode around on her and got himself into position, and only when he was completely on her would he grab her by the neck. And when they grab the femae during mating, they don't try and wrap around them, or chew onto them. They just hold steady and keep twitching, and trying to entwine the tails. It still looks rather mean, but it's nothing like when a kingsnake is trying to eat another snake. You will know that your female is receptive if, upon him biting her neck and pushing his tail against hers, she will deliberately arch her tail into the air to make it easier for the male to connect. If she doesn't do that, and instead is flipping out and frantically pulling her tail away, she is not receptive, and NOT happy... haha
drache
05-22-2009, 07:24 PM
okay thanks - that helps
he does follow her around, but not particularly her head
mostly they've been just lying curled together under the sub-strate
here's a really bad quick photo just to illustrate
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2474/3555673614_92b83304bc_b.jpg
can't really see the heads, but one is bottom right and the other tucked in somewhere at the top left
does this look promising and can I leave them alone over night?

13 cents each + tax = 5$ =/ Thankfully the petco knows me really well and is always very nice and gives me extra ;)
When he gets bigger I'll be moved out and I'll be either building him a large indoor enclosure or giving him a room in my new house by then, when I'm in NC and winters aren't so horrible.
I put an ad on craigslist for a bullsnake a few days ago and got an email today, 20 minute drive by the lady found one on her driveway and caught him for me, I barely missed a pretty damn big one she told me lol, but this 3 footer is great, very feisty to!

The bad part is I can only keep 3 snakes my mother says, because she hates snakes, but knows this is my future profession so she tolerates it. I'm going to release my (what I believe is) male garter later tonight, hopefully he can go be with some of the females and they can fix the snake population at the creek by my house.

When we first went to pick her up she was a bit crazy, bit the ladies shoe and whatnot, but in general she is a pretty calm snake, I'm working on taming her down and whatnot. Second day and she has already accepted prey, took an adult mouse (live) without an problems. Yea, I used to live in Iowa as a kid, just outside of souix city actually. My dad told me about how they had to bring in bullsnakes for a park north of the city to keep the rattlesnake population down.

I'm not allowed a snake, I have fish though and today I bought a Fire Bellied Newt!
I bought this little girl(?) today and have her set up in a very nice sterile tank. After a week or so i'll move her to a more permanent home with more water and more land.
The photos are crappy so I'm sorry bought that :( Artificial light in a dark room is just bad for photos.
