As part of my morning chores I have to go wake my adults Radixs that live in the basement. This is a great time for me since I take about 15 minutes to drop the front of the enclosure and interact with this group. Sitting on the floor puts me at eye level and these guys come right out to see what I have for them. They have become so trusting. It is made-up of a few WC and CB. This morning I walked into the room and found a Radix on the floor. It wasn't one of mine and it was obvious it hadn't eaten in awhile. I fired up another tank and got him settled in. He was really thirsty. Now, just hoping he will start eating soon. "Life is good"

Sigh.... I went to do my chores this morning, walked out the front door and stepped in turkey poop. Now how come I couldn't have found a garter instead?? LOLOL!!!!
Steve, I really hope he does well for you! Send pics!! Your guys must have a hidden sign out front, and tunnels into your basement. Kind of like The Great Escape, but in reverse. :-)

Your a radix magnet Steve...
I was going to say I wish we had Radix here in NY, but then it occurred to me that they would not be so "unique" if they were a local species.

It's not unusual to find one or two in the basement every winter but not this late in the season. I do think somethings going on since during spring, summer and fall I have wild Radixs that come out to be hand fed. Some people feed the squirrels. I feed the Radix:)

It's the unseasonably warm weather Steve. I never thought abot "wild" snakes habits till recently, now I worry some have come out in the last couple day's and may not make it bak before it cools back off.
Congrats on the new addition. I can't believe you didn't get pics tho ;)

We get them every fall and spring, sometime during the winter, too.

There has been one that likes the window sill behind the oil tank this winter. I have seen it often, but can't reach it. Guess I need to update the above thread with pictures of that one....

Kris,
You made me feel so guilty. Here's a photo. As you can see he's lean and will need some TLC. He's come to the right place.

Great news,
He's already had his first meal and it was hand fed. He's probably been up visiting the others when I'm not down there. Considering he been looking in on my females. My girls probably say "Hey, big boy!"

She is a beauty, Just after that photo, her eyes constricted as she zeroed in on a worm. They are great hunters. Not much gets by them.
Funny you should mention the two dots. I have one Radix with no dots. I'll get a picture and post it.

He a good looking male and I'm not sure. My boy scar might need a rest someday. It would be nice to have a bullpen to choose from. My biggest fear in letting him go this spring is my zero turning radius mower. I had a big gravid female killed last year. Two weeks before I was holding her and now wondered if I did the right thing. I know it was the right thing but hindsight makes me feel the other way. The worst part was she didn't die immediately. I had to dispatch her, quickly. She was suffering. I still don't feel good about the whole thing. Bad, bad memories! That's one situation I hope to never go through again.

i am an hour 1/2 out of radix range. well worth the drive to go herping for them though. occasional snake in basement, usually brown snakes (dekayi). most common animal encountered in basements around here, especially this time of year, are eastern tiger salamanders.

Here's one of my little scrubs. Found this one lounging in the canopy this morning. This is one of the areas I will feed them from. I think they know, the higher up you are the better chance at getting some food. If I happen to feed down low, I'll feel them touching my elbow to get my attention. It works everytime.

LeAnn, Just wait until the end of July. They will be even more beautiful. I'm so proud of that group. These are my fast growers and the most docile Radixs I've ever seen. Nothing seems to rock there boat. Truely a delight to work with. Don't get me wrong they have there moments. Like, feeding time. Then they are typical Radix.

It's a little late in winter for this kind of thing to happen. My daughter Gabby came running up stairs with this little male on her hand. She said he was heading across the floor when she entered the snake room. As I type she's heading to the shower since she got musked. The guy ate a worm and drank some water. Good looking little male. He's got 60 days by himself then we'll decide were he goes.

Cool Steve, I live in Saskatchewan Canada and there are lots of Radixes in many areas but I have never heard of anyone having then showing up in the basement like you do. Man must be nice!! A little jealous here!! ;)
