I'm interested in buying a Garter (in the spring) but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. I want one that is under $50, so probably a baby which is fine with me. Also, I want a bluish or reddish colored. I was thinking maybe one of the following:
Red-Sided Garter
Blue Striped Garter
Florida Blue Garter
Pudget Sound Garter
I'd like suggestions on what kind to get, altough I would like any kind that's cheap and have exotic colors.

The best place to start would be right here, in our classifieds section..... it won't be long before it is full with members' captive bred Garters for sale!

All I can say is don't go to Petco. Only go to a pet store you trust implicitly. I'm getting my next snake from Steve/Guidofatherof5 in a couple of weeks.

I might have Puget Sound garter babies in about 2-3 months

the second best place to start is Scott Felzer's Garter Snakes, specializing in aberrant garters (http://www.albinogartersnake.com) but prices can be alot on some of the more rare speicies and morphs

Adamaneus: How long do you think that will be?
Edgy: I saw that on your website, but there aren't any prices right now. :/

Does that include shipping?

shipping is pricey - and you don't want to cut corners there
are you anywhere near other forum members?
then you can just pick up your baby and have a nice visit with a fellow garter geek

I'll be blunt (clumbsy?) I always worry when a person chooses their snake by virtue of its' price..... you asked particularly for a 'cheap' snake (under $50). What if you need a vet?
I know money is always a consideration, but remember 'sh1t happens' and once you own an animal it's welfare is your responsibility.

I would be able to pay for a vet, but I just don't want to be paying a whole bunch for a snake.

Steve lives in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Might be a bit far for a day trip from Minnesota, but it's could definitely be done. I personally live in Kansas City, KS suburbs but I don't breed snakes. Not yet anyways:)

Hey Phil, I'm in eastern Iowa. or three hours due west of Chicago IL. Not sure how far north you are in MN.
I was planning on ordering a couple redsided garters and maybe a pugent or two. If your folks would be willing to meet, we could work something out.

Oh, and it would have to be a female because the one I have now is a female.
