how much do garter snakes go for at like pet stores and stuff?
or do they even sell garters in pet stores?
Ive always just encountered them from catching them as a kid.
to me theyre worth a whole lot because I love them but I mean, what is their general pricing when you go about buying them?

In the UK the price varies depending on species.... you can get a baby radix or marcianus in the shops for around £35. More 'sought after' types, such as tetrataenia rarely get to the pet shops, they would be bought direct from a breeder... they might cost £100+ for a baby, depending on the seller.
European prices are a little lower.

I don't know about pet stores, but I usually use kingsnake.com as a general price scale (when you compare prices between breeders). I believe scott f. is has a variety of species, and would be able to give you a more specific answer pertaining to a specific one.

Scott F is the one that has the thread 2009 breeding's, very reputable from what I've heard, not that I've bought from him personally

:) thanks lol
Im not even sure what specific kind of garter I wanted to know about to tell you the truth. The only ones Ive ever had encounters with are the wild eastern garters native to my area.

here in the US "common" species can go for as little as $10
what that means, essentially, is that it's not entirely certain that it's a garter snake you're getting, and if so, they won't know what kind
when you're getting them from a breeder or at a show, normals of most species will go for $20 to $100, depending on (sub-)species

When I was still shopping at petco for mice (before I ordered bulk online) I would check out the snakes and occasionally they would have "Garter Snakes" for $15 or so. Rarely were these garters though, they were usually bright striped ribbon snakes, Way to skinny and skittish to be garters, and they had a few more facial spots than garters did too.

where in the country are you?
there are often garters and ribbons who need homes and the greatest cost in getting a garter from someone other than a local source is usually the shipping
and then there is bargaining for something you want
I got my baby marcianus at a reptile show for $20.- each
they are captive bred and she did want more for them, but after a little bonding over garters, I offered and she took

I live in the US.... Massachusetts to be more specific :)
I was just randomly thinking about how much people pay for them. As of right now Im actually not looking to buy any more snakes but because my only experience from snakes was in the wild, I hadnt given much thought to how much these snakes would cost in places like pet stores or something. Just curious. :)

To satisfy that curiosity, some Garter snakes can cost a few hundred dollars to get one.

Depending on colors and rarity. Pet stores will seldom carry these.

For recommendations, I highly recommend Easterns, Checkereds, Plains, and Wanderings, all are in general extremely laid back, get big, are incredibly willing to eat (not that others are not) and are very hardy. Some species tend to be a little more high strung, particularly ribbons, florida blue-stripes (similis) and black necks.

As far as cost, that totally depends on species, as Wayne mentioned some can go for hundreds... flame easterns, blacknecks, and those new granite checkereds are high on the sought after list for many and all fetch over $100 each. The most I've ever paid for garters was $350 for my pair of flame easterns from Scott. I could not be happier with them though, they are top notch animals.
