I am planning to put a drainage layer in my terrium so I can grow some plants in it. Originally I was planning to get frogs, and it would've worked. But I was watching some old videos I made and decided I miss having garters..I was think though, will they trash the tank so the drainage layer won't work? I remembered you have to change the dirt more than with frogs, and plants and evern springtails didnt really recycle the dirt fast enough..

If you start up colonies of Collembola and isopods and keep one side/area of the tank relatively WET, a drainage layer and all of the above would allow you to make a great environment. Garters don't thrash stuff around that much, especially if they have a decent and clear-of-stuff basking spot.

My garters love to burrow in their substrate. However, I have seen planted vivs on here that are fantastic! I'll be following this thread for the secrets to a planted garter tank. ;)
