I'm so madly in love with this little man already!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/jitami/Dogs/Gizmo2.jpg
(and yes that is slobber on his ears! LOL)
Since letting our aggressive girl go I've been toying with the idea of adding another dog to the household. I've really missed the big dog snuggles... I still love Great Danes, but we've had really rough luck with ours getting along with other dogs... Soooo.... I started looking at basset hounds. They still have that big dog personality, but since they were bred to hunt in packs they typically get along with anything and everything. Gizmo is no exception!
I got very lucky finding this little man at our local SPCA. This was actually his second stint at the SPCA. He came in and was adopted out about a month ago and that family returned him due to his high energy level. He's supposed to be 2, but really still acts like a puppy. He's into everything all the time and then instantly he just wants to snuggle up for a nap. He's sleeping with my son on the couch right now which is the only reason I have a minute to post! ;) He's recharging the batteries for when daddy gets home! :D
Btw, he came with the name, but it does fit him so I think it's staying.

Gizmo is a doll!! Congrats!!! I used to work with our local basset rescue and I was amazed how many end up in rescue... we were always over full. It seemed most of them were turned in for being too high energy (everyone thinks they are lazy old dogs, but they're not!!), they couldn't be housetrained, or they were snippy with kids. Lost of skin and eye problems, too. But overall I love them!!! Not great on the coming when called, tho... lol They seem to have that selective hearing loss thing downpat!! :-)

sounds like a similar personality to dachshunds - they seem to have missed that "follow the leader" gene that's so fundamental to the average dog

Gotta get a pic of that!!!

Thankfully he chose a spot down lower on the bed last night... boy, am I tired, tho... this boy really is a handful. I'm sure we'll get it figured out, but wow...
LORI!!! I'm going to have to pick your brain!!! That is so cool that you used to work with basset rescue! He's really my first experience with them. I figured I had enough dog experience to handle anything... lol... yeah... I'm doubting that theory now! After a veeeeeeeeeeery long morning I just pulled out a crate and guess who jumped right in and settled down? Wow... door's open, puppy's asleep... cool that he's already crate trained. So, whatcha do about non-stop demanding barking?
Oh, and Rhea, he does follow me around... until there's something better to do ;)

Tami, given his history of being shuffled around so much, he may take longer to settle in... he's probably being extra demanding right now as he's over excited to be back in a home. But bassets are barkers... goes with the breed... lol. It's great that he can go into his crate and fall asleep-- that'll help with his nervousness. The ones I used to take in barked a LOT the first few days and then it tapered off as they became more comfortable.
I wouldn't make any decisions on his temperment or behavior for a little bit... let him work thru his excitement and yeah, that includes vocalizing every single thing he feels. LOL I bet he starts settling more and more each day for you.

Thanks Lori :) I know we're in a huge adjustment period, so not too worried about anything right now. And whatever his issues are he's here to stay, so we'll get through it.
Oh, and that nap lasted maybe 20 minutes :) Oh-well, at least he'll be tired tonight :) Even though the door was open, it's a wire dane sized crate with a little bit bigger step to get in than he must be used to, cause when he did wake up he woofed & woofed thinking he couldn't get out... lol... even though the threshold is pretty much even with the bed. Of course I went and helped him out. Silly boy :)
He's my first bone burier/hider, too :) He goes and moves his bone every 10 minutes or so to another, surely more secure?, hiding spot. It's been burried outside 3 times, under the couch cusion once, under the corner of the dog bed once, on a stack of CD's below our entertainment center once, you get the idea... toooooo funny :D

Nikki, Giz has been following a basset beagle mix around the dog park the last few days. Too cute! You'll have to share pictures of your dog! Ditto for you Andrea! Maycee sounds like a sweetheart!
Gizmo traveled with me for 5 days over this past weekend and did great with my friend's two danes...a 4 year old intact male and a 2 year old girl. All got along well and got to cruise the motor home loose together :) I did WAY more walking than the dane folks, but Giz was really pretty good and I bet I'm the only one who saw Tucson's historic district on foot.... yipeee.... lol
OH, and Loren, definitely thought of you as Giz and I were walking through some of the washes :) Also realize I'm going to need to get this guy rattlesnake aversion training. I can't find anything offered here until late June, tho :(
Here's a pic of Gizmo sucking up to hubby :)

LOL... Gizmo would never do such a thing.... (yeah right)
Giz likely just turned 2. His paperwork at the shelter said 2 years 1 month. He acts soooooo much younger, though. I asked the vet to guess his age and he also said right around 2, so 2 it is. I swear, though, he still mouths and chews on everything, including us, like a much younger puppy.

LOL OMG Stephanie hahahaha... When I go to the window and say Look at the kitty or puppy she comes flyin where im at and starts howling and barking LOL When I say kitty kitty her ears perk up and she starts whining. She still chews on stuff but not much anymore. She sure does tear up her toys. When my 2 daughters and my son eats she will sit in front of them and howl at them til they give her some food LOL. That dog i swear is crazy hahahaha but thats why I love her

I just took in a dalmatian that was seized as part of a drug/prostitution raid. He'd been living chained to a van for the last 2 years. Talk about a dog starting to re-live the puppyhood he never had-- phew-- it's been a couple of years since I've had a dal and I forgot how exuberant and wild and insane and nutso they are!!!!! LOL He is a wild child for sure... oh, and he only speaks Spanish. LOLOL But so far the language barrier has not been an issue. :-)

So does Mira and Tyr. :p
My wife feeds them a bites of tuna (in water only). And all it takes is the clinking of glass or the sound of the can opener. ;)
Spoiled rotten but then they are our kids, not having the mammal type anymore.

Lori, that's such a great way to put it and could explain sooooooo much in Gizmo's case!!! Kudos to you for taking in the dal. I helped transport several from shelters to rescue and they're cool dogs. A bit too hyper for me(Gizmo, did you hear that???) but still great dogs.

LOL Sounds like every dalmation I've ever known :D The first people I babysat for when I was a pre-teen had one. Her name was Penny... she was more trouble than the three boys I was being paid to watch! LOL Btw, this was 25 years ago and I can still picture Penny(and her antics) clear as day, so, yep, I'd guess you'll be remembering these spots for a long time to come! If he holds still long enough give him a snuggle for me :)

Thanks Stephanie... he is a supreme cuddler... if you make it through the chewing frenzy that predictably happens right before he settles down :) I still find it hard to believe he's two. He NEEDS to chew and I've never had one that old that just NEEDS something in his mouth when he's tired. It's weird. But he does settle down, snuggles up, and rolls over so you can rub his wittle freckly belly :)

Sure. Go ahead, brag about how adorable Giz is. While I suffer the effects of Spotted Insanity Fever. While I was cleaning the ball python's enclosure yesterday, he jumped into it. I repeat-- the 80 pound damnatian jumped into the enclosure, spinning around and gleefully sending shavings and greenery flying throughout the room. Weee. Woo hoo. I rescued a dal. Oh the joy of it.
Help me. Anyone. Did you know when a big brainless bag of spots launches himself uninvited onto your bed, small dogs go flying off the sides??
