Decor Ideas?

I want to get some greenery, should I add anything else? A hidey house?? Can I add live potted house plants?? I've got an abudance of those.

definitely needs a place to hide.I don't know about the substrate.Somebody that use that kind of stuff might know.I would'nt want my snake swallowing any of that.I put all of my snakes on paper towels or newspaper.The snake looks awesome also!

Thanks snakeman.. I tried to get stuff that was listed "ok" on the care sheet here. The substrate was also recomended by a couple people I know who own snakes. ?

I like your setup, thats a very unique tank.

There are lots of ideas for hides, from commercial "reptile hides" from hagen or zoo med, to empty paper tubes, some folks use empty flower pots.

Small potted plants are definitely OK, I have some in certain cages here.

Why not hand feed Tom, its great.. Most of mine either eat while I hold them or get placed in a feeder box until they are done with the meal.

Alright you can come over and hand feed my het silver.The only thing it will be feeding on is your hand though!LOL!A lot of my snakes (mostly the young ones) won't eat when I am around.Besides, I like the easier cleaning.

I do hand feed my pugets.Most of the time they wind up getting my finger.

Funny you should mention that Tom, my Puget tags me all the time. He's one of the most eager feeders I have.

My babies all get fed in small "sandwich" style totes $1.44 at most dept. stores.

The adults eat in 17 quart sterilite bins. I don't care much for feeding in the cages with the substrate.

It keeps them from fighting.

My blackneck is really the only one I have to feed in her enclosure, so I use repti carpet, that stuff rocks, easy to clean and reusable, no chance of ingestion.

Other than the fish.. wich I'm not sure he'll be getting anymore of. I had planned to feed him his next meal a pinky in a plastic shoe box. He really enjoys burrowing in the cedar mulch.. It's fun to watch the kids try to find his head.. a tail sticking out at one end and the head blending into the subtrate.

Cedar (Sorry) are you sure it's cedar???

Reason is, Cedar causes respiratory & liver problems...

That aroma that makes cedar smell so nice, that comes from oils in the wood that mess up animals lungs...

This is what we're using.. My bad it is cypress not cedar..

that's great stuff and it's totally fine for your snake. Cedar = bad but cypress = good. I keep all of my snakes on aspen and I do not take them out of their cages to eat. But then again, I stand over and watch as they eat and pick off anything that might get stuck to the food with my tongs as they eat. I line up a bunch of tubs next to each other and just start plugging hungry snake mouths!

except for my similis. he is evil and mean and nasty. so he gets a smelly fish pinky left in his cage on a dish!

the only thing that your cage definitely needs is a hidey hole of some sort. it should be small, dark, and low enough to the ground that the snake will feel like it is secure.

Dollar stores are great for flora for tanks. The dollar store near me sells these 3 foot long ivy vines and they even BEND.... those are great!!!

Idea... I have some feet you put under potted plants. They raise the pot 1-2 inches. Could I put a few under the water dish pile subtrate around and a small amout under the dish to make a hidey house?

that most likely will not work long term... he will shove the bedding around very quickly and make a mess of it. he could also shove it around enough to where it slides and he gets stuck or injured. Best to use an actual single item as a hidey.... it can be something as simple as a cardboard box with a hole cut in it. I have used black microwavable plastic containers. Turn it upside down... cut a hole out large enough for the snake... instant, very cheap hidey!

Looking good so far. Fake plants are great, they add instant greenery and are fairly easy to clean. I use a plastic "dog" bowl that is hollow underneath for a water dish, provides a swimming spot as well as a hidey spot (has the hand-holds - ie hide entrances - for easy lifting). Not sure how the dog bowl would work on the cypress, I use paper towel for substrate.

It works just as it should on peat moss, cypress mulch shouldn't do any worse.

I have those same dog bowls in everything from cage carpet, aspen, bark, moss, etc.

Works fine. and best yet, they have them at the dollar store.

Well I added a live plant this afternoon. I've got a few more vine type starts i need to get a few more shallow pots and I'll add them over the next few day's. I also added an inverted pot bottom as ahidey for now. He still likes to burrow in the mulch. Which the kids love... They've been trying to find him all day, when just his head is sticking out.. Kinda like where's waldo.

Once hallowed, I used a rasp and sand paper to smooth the inside. There was no hesitation.

Looks great. Just make sure the log can't be tipped over. The hollowed out log is a great idea for a hide, obviously your snake approves. :)

LeAnn, I was a bit concerned.. I think next cleaning I'll hot glue it to a piece of heavy plexi glass. It seems pretty secure tho, it sit's level and seems pretty stable. I wouldn't have worried about it tipping before I hallowed it out. LOL

I cant tell if you have flourecent lighting on top, but that would make it come alive appearance-wise. A 5 dollar timer works great with that.
I keep all my adult garters on fir bark, which is like repti- bark. I feed in the cage. I try to get them to strike at the rodent right from my hemostat so they dont get bedding in their mouths, which is one main way they will ingest substrate- but the main thing is, I wouldnt feed them anything wet on the substrate cuz bedding will stick to it(the other main way they ingest bedding). I raise babies on paper towels.
