nice snake ya got there.
not to sound rude but those look like rosy red feeder fish, aren't they supposed to be as bad as goldfish?
Nice call, They do look like rosies, and yes they contain thiaminase, and yes they are bad for snake food.
Guppies or Tilapia / salmon fillet cut into strips is much better for your snake.;)

:confused: I was told they were guppies, which the snake had been eating at the store. I'll have to douple check and amke sure from now on, about what fish we're actually getting.
Aso is there any opinions on if Simon is a he or if he should be remnamed Simone?

As far as sexing, can you post a clear photo of the last 1/3 of the snake? The tail end is the best way to sex.
Another common feeder sold at pet stores is Comets, comets are bad, they are just another type of goldfish.
I'll dig out the safe/not safe feeder fish article and post a link.

Wayne I did read the care sheets.. I knew not to get the goldfish, but i asked for guppies and that's what she told me I was getting. I checked again tonight.. I'm going to try and find Simon some worms. I'll also be more carefull in the future about what fish we're getting.
The kids realy enjoyed watching the fish get caught. "oooh wow" "cool"

Well the pictures are slightly blurry and it would be best to have a clear photo of the bottom of the snakes back end as well as the side, rather than the top..... but from that angle and those pictures that looks like a female's tail. It tapers kinda quickly... normally a male that large would have a pretttyyyy bulky tail!
in the other thread she did post a pic of her substrate, it's T-rex cypress mulch.

I know :) Thanks.
I'm trying to do things right, I believe if it's worth doing it should be done right the first time. But I do think I'll make my share of mistakes ;)

we all made mistakes with our first snakes. It happens... but as long as we learn from them and correct them as we go... things only get better.
Heck, when I first start keeping garter snakes as pets as a kid, I was feeding them nothing but goldfish and I had them on sand :mad::(

Ok, so I admit I'm not completely comfortable with Simon. Reaching in and picking him up makes me shutter.. Geez the things I do for my kids. Who are really enjoying the snake. They each had a turn holding him today. My Dh admitted he's pretty and wants to know if we can get a different one, he's taken with a few of the bright ones we've seen pics of.

some petshop clerk once told me that guppies and minnows were the same thing
my only comment was "you work in the tropical fish department, right?"
